All,

I’ve had a million things to do over the weekend and was never able to get around to writing. New post coming tomorrow.

In the meantime, what does everyone think about this?

“I fear that reparations would be an excuse for some to say, ‘We’ve paid our debt,’ and to avoid the much harder work.”

I can feel that statement. Without reparations people are already on some, “slavery was a long time ago, get over it.”

Mind you I’d cash a check quick as a motherfucker…but frankly the way this Government spends money, we’d get a check and it would only be able to fill up our tanks a couple times. I’d rather have money go into schools and programs to empower folks. My job is to help people with employment, education and training. I find that the people who rely on me don’t really get far, but the people who learn and take the information and understand the processes are the ones that don’t have to come back again.

that reparations skit on season 1 of chappelle’s show forever changed my view on the subject….okay maybe not but it sho was funny

“i just bought this baby cash money!!”

I Co-sign Amedeo,
I also agree that having complete educational equality regardless of tax base would improve all childrens chances of success in the inner city/ and or rural areas

Chris:

I have to Agree with Senator Obama, its not the answer. We need a fundamental overhaul of or social services and education services in urban america. no amount of money short of 1 million dollars per descendent of slaves would be satisfactory. Sadly many of us would waste that money on nothingness and ignorance. like Dave Chapelle show we would save Cadilac from going under. I wonder what would really happen if every descendent of slaves received a million dollars. Some clever white folks would figure a way to make a lot of money off of us. Personally I would feel a good number of us ahem us on this site would use it for good…

4 08 2008
Knatural

Um…Obama’s right. Why give folks a lump sum and their schools suck, or they can’t afford insurance. Reparations would encourage laziness. It’s just another handout.

Besides, I read somewhere, that the gov’t would need at least a hundred trillion dollars based on an estimated 200 million hours of slave labor to pay out to descendants (those who can prove it). And that’s with interest!

4 08 2008
brran1

I agree. Monetary reparations are not the answer to the ills in the black community. Invest it in our communities, our schools, and in things that will take us farther than a check ever could.

4 08 2008
4m_no_2_dc

we can’t get reparations; there are just too stipulations… like would you getmore money based on the longevity of your family being involved in the slave trade? based on you ecomonic status now, do you get less money? should we give money to a bunch of black people who we KNOW willspend money on spinners, but won’t pay college loans (you know who they are)?

i think about the skit on chappelle’s show…. when all the black people go their reparations…. “these people ar just rushing to get this money back to us”

LMAO.

i think we all deserve reparations…. but we also deserved 40 acres and a mule… you see how that turned out.

4 08 2008
RedDiva403

C’mon folks, we ALL know what some of “us” would do with a reparations check. There would be an exponential spike in the sales of rims, Jordans, and hairweaves LOL. But seriously NO amount of money (or apology) can the repair the psychological effects of slavery. No matter how big the check, we would still be black in a country that pretends it isn’t racist because it’s PC. I for one agree with Obama, we need more than a one time check, we need something that will be an investment for the long term (ie public school funding, better training and jobs).

4 08 2008
Amadeo

How about tax breaks…but I bet the gov could never handle that.

4 08 2008
brran1

@4rm_no_2_dc

I agree with you. The government would find a way to exclude the majority of the descendants of slaves. They’d probably make some type of stipulation where you’d have to have a full African bloodline which stretches back to the slave trade. In this day and age, who can honestly say that they aren’t mixed with something?

4 08 2008
WO Is WO

I’m ok with it. If they were going to do reperations they should have done it when they were supposed to . In the year 2008 folk will blow that money ( to buy Blow, Hoes, and Shoes). It woudl do us no good to receive a huge ass check in the mail . Just look at what folk have done with there Stimulus Check ??? ( I put mines in a high interest savings ING account). Not saved it at all. Free money for doing nothing. If they do chose to do reperations then it should go to the inner city schools, black colleges, scholarships funds for Black children, and recreation centers in all black communities. You cant even give you cousin 100.00 and think he going to do right with it. So why give 1 million plus people 40,00 ( or waht ever) and think they going to do right with it.

4 08 2008
chaoticdiva

Invest it in the inner city communities with high populations of minorities. Think Detroit, The Bronx (yes, PR had slavery, just like the rest of the Caribbean), Baltimore, DC, Compton, South Central, Birmingham, Atlanta, Queens…

Not only do we need it for the schools, we need it for neighborhood clean up. The government should flip some of those old buildings that collect crack heads and prostitution rings to change into rehabilitation centers, community recs with after school programs, etc…

4 08 2008
Knatural

Ok. Assuming all 37M of us are descendants of slaves (no), and that we all get an equal cut (another no), then each of us would receive somewhere around $2M.
How would bi-racial/multi-racial folks claim their cut? What about folks who were “passing” most of their lives? What about Liberians? There would be panic in the streets…

4 08 2008
former lurker

“They’d probably make some type of stipulation where you’d have to have a full African bloodline which stretches back to the slave trade.”

i read an article a couple of years ago about this. it was basically saying exactly that- that you should have to prove you were a direct descendent of a slave and even estimate the number of hours said descendent worked, etc. etc.

4 08 2008
chaoticdiva

What pisses me off is that there are idiots in the black community who are hell bent on assuming that just because Obama is black that he’s only going to focus on black issues, instead of the entire country’s issues. That’s why he’s getting so much heat from people like Jesse Jackson, who think that black rules all. Mind you, there are more latinos then blacks in the U.S…

4 08 2008
brran1

@Knat

The government would most likely restrict it to those that descended from the slaves of the North American Slave trade. That means my share would be cut to below $1 Million…

4 08 2008
Amadeo

The deeper root to all of this…neither way will change ideas and that’s the real thing. If ideas changed alot of this would be a moot point. I think giving out money would foster more anger among whites…affirmative action already does even though middle class white women have gotten the most from it.

4 08 2008
brran1

@Amadeo

Of course it would. That’s why they’re trying to do away with Afirmative Action.

I’ll go ahead and co-sign with most of the posts above. Ever since I heard that reparations were even a possibility I’ve been against them. Provisions for closing the gap between the poorest of the poor and the richest of the rich (or even the gap between the poorest of the poor and the lower middle class) can only yield good in the world.

I want to punch Vernellia Randall in the ovaries. How is she gonna say my man can’t get elected with this POV? I want to vote for him twice based on this story alone.

4 08 2008
Knatural

I would never trust anyone named ‘Vernellia’! Eww.

4 08 2008
Amadeo

Frankly if he says he’s for reparations he’ll never get elected. He be better off throwing gang signs.

4 08 2008
Jen

I have to cosign with Prof. Randall. Sweeping help across the board is not going to level the playing field for Black Americans, and the fact that Barack Obama can’t publicly admit that without ruining his chances at the presidency just means that the U.S. isn’t truly ready for a Black president.

People act like reparations is such a dirty word. Reparations don’t have to be a big ass check in the mail. Focus on improving BLACK schools, better educating BLACK children and giving us free or heavily discounted higher education. That sounds like a great plan for reparations to me.

Affirmative Action is a form of reparations. It was conceived as a direct response to slavery and its repercussions, that much is clear from LBJ’s early discussion of the subject. Just because everybody and their mama have hopped on the AA bandwagon, doesn’t mean that it and programs like it aren’t reparations.

Also, reparations, if they come to exist, need to go to BLACK AMERICANS. I don’t want it going the way of AA. Reparations are owed by this country to Black Americans. Not Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Jamaicans and etc. Yes, they had slavery, too, but it wasn’t American slavery, so an attempt at correcting that wrong isn’t the point. And, it shouldn’t matter “how Black” they are, as long as they have been living as a Black American. Otherwise, the Creoles would riot.

4 08 2008
Landon

It would be a strippers DREAM!!!!!

making it rain would be an understatement!

instead of money straight up… I would prefer all projects become condos and they own it while paying a a mortgage on their units (same as their previous rent) so they own a piece of the american pie and get tax benefits. the money goes to renovate the projects and to be injected directly into all near by schools.

Day care centers put into all projects and urban dwellings so our children can have decent upbringing and learn a little more at a younger age… the million of dollars per person (tax free). 2 teachers per class room….

ON a Side note what do you think about mandatory AIDS testing for all Americans?

I haven’t read these comments yet, or Obama’s comment – but I think Chappelle, the comic genius that he is, hit the nail on the head. If you give these people (yeah…I SAID IT!!!) a check, they are not going to do anything productive with it. I’d much rather see reparations in the form of higher salaries for inner city teachers, parenting classes for people like the parents of Terrance Jr. (see the Facebook page pics – I reference Terrance Jr. almost daily), and serious mentoring programs – things of that nature. And I think that we (seriously – people on this blog) should get to decide who allocates the money. I think we discussed this once before – but I nominate Cornel West. Who else would you nominate to manage the Black People Get It Together Fund? I also think that Bob Johnson should pledge half of his net worth to the fund. That nig nog owes us!

Jen:

how much money do you think we will get… sadly they did give money to Japanese americans received money after WWII because they were put into concentration camps and their houses and business were stripped from them.

however in that case a a legit monetary value could be assigned to their losses.

How do you calculate what we were worth. Does america have that much money?

4 08 2008
B4Prez

Reparations checks – NO! Nike, Cadillac, and Hennessy all ready have too much money for my cousins to go pumping more into them.

However, I’ve always felt that the best way to offer reparations would be to grant tuition waivers for students attending in-state colleges and universities. In addition to education in the obvious form, it’s often the lack of that little piece of paper which counts so many blacks out before they can even be considered for higher paying jobs and careers.

4 08 2008
brran1

If Ming Ling and ‘nem can get reparations for being put in concentration camps for less than a decade, then we deserve some type of payback for the time our ancestors were enslaved.

4 08 2008

Jen:

I don’t think focusing on Black communities alone is going to change the plight of the most disadvantaged. Amadeo is right: black Americans’ status in our society won’t change until the mind’s of non-Black Americans are changed.

Frankly, I imagine that if the government focuses on *all* disadvantaged peoples, we will gain more b/c the YTs in gov’t will know they’re giving benefit to their own, not just the the more negligible “other”. We’ll end up riding the coattails of the poorest whites, but I like to think that the liberation of one ultimately can mean the liberation of all.

4 08 2008

Affirmative Action wasn’t seen as a form of reparations but a way to deal with current the discrimination, since you can’t as easily ensure fair hiring as you can fair voting.

No president much less the first black president would sign a reparations bill. They would instantly impeach his ass some people are still mad that some Native Americans got casinos.

I figure they would easily twist it around and find a way to give it to white women just like affirmative action. Probably citing the (nonexistent) number of white women who were raped by black men in a Lebron Vogue cover like fashion…

4 08 2008

Co-sign that reparations cannot come in the form of a big ass check, but rather investments in the communities that are most deeply affected by the legacy of slavery. Oh yeah, and descendents of slaves should never pay taxes agian… ever (not that it would help me out, but I think its only fair).

@ Landon
Actually, ‘mandatory’ HIV testing is the wrong term– its supposed to be part of a routine physical exam. Given the fact that HIV infection rates continue to grow in young black females, middle aged ‘divorcees’ (cougars), nursing home residents, and the elderly it makes sense

4 08 2008
Amadeo

How about breaks for small black businesses? Credits for things like tutors and classes to help kids get ahead and prepare them for AP classes. Upgrades to public school facilities. Health Care…not free clinics either. Credits for car insurance (those living in the city are paying for accidents had here by people coming from the counties). Reflect it in peoples Pell grants. Put money towards recreation centers and childrens rec leagues. Make money available for training programs…like Maryland has the Individual training account – about 4K for trainings (of in demand jobs) available to people in MD under a certain income level. How about improvements for public defenders offices…so they won’t just be there to work out a deal to get you less time and leave you with a record regardless.

4 08 2008
Jen

@ Landon – Hell no. America doesn’t have that much money, and it never will. How about this: the U.S. pays for improvements on education and recruitment systems for the next 500 years? That should put us about as close to fair and square as we can reasonably get.

Also, I would want these educational contributions to be controlled by private citizens–not by the government. In other words, individual citizens should be given grants through which they are able to run schools in Black communities WITHOUT government intervention. Essentially, publicly-funded private schools. Charter schools, less the bullshit, success-impeding, government intervention.

@ Jo – I’m not saying that there should be no programs in place to help other poor Americans, but programs to help Black Americans need to be tailored to help Black Americans. What’s good for the goose is not good for the gander, here. For proof of this, please see the history of Affirmative Action in this country.

Jen:

How does mandatory AIDS Testing violate private rights…

You have to be tested TB and over diseases, why not AIDS.

If we are going to defeat AIDS we need to know how bad the epidemic truly is. We have not idea how many people have AIDS because half of the people infected don’t know they have it.

As a black woman I would expect you to be the most concerned about that situation. it would not be public record but everyone should know their status.

In NYC they have this thing called the SAFE SEX CARD. it has a membership number and a phone number on the back (24/7 operator). If you meet some one you like, and they give you the card there is a number on the back to check their STD status and when they were last tested… its purely volunteer.

4 08 2008
Esquire

mandatory AIDS testing = violation of privacy rights

CO-SIGN

That is a very very slippery slope. Mandatory AIDS tests, then Mandatory STD tests, then Mandatory tests for Mono, diabetes, etc. Next you end up testing black babies for down syndrome, sickle cell, etc… The testing is not inherently bad. Its what that information is used for. Test those black babies…then kill them off.

If you think that is a ridiculous argument…go pick up an American History book.

Plus, you cannot force one to get ANY medical treatment they dont want unless the disease is highly communicable…like TB.

4 08 2008
Jen

@ Landon – I know of no mandatory medical testing for adults in this country, but I could be wrong–I’ve never specifically looked into it. If something is mandatory, then that means it must be monitored by the government. That is where the right to privacy stuff kicks in.

4 08 2008

Just because Obama is black doesn’t mean that America is ready to have this conversation. Cause America isn’t. And the more Obama focuses on race the more he’ll jeopardizes his chances of creating a legacy. I feel for the brother. Can’t be easy trying to make everyone happy.

Yeah, even though Prof Randall makes a good point in that since he can’t be for reparations it means we’re not really ready for a Black president, I’m down with Obama’s decision.

Giving us a big fat check? So we can give it right BACK to the 2520s when we spend it and give them a reason to be all, “Okay, we paid our debt, now everything’s okeely dokeely…so don’t ever mention slavery again.”? Please. To a certain extent if some of our mentalities don’t change money will do nothing this is evident from the aftermath of desegregation which even though it was a positive killed a lot of black businesses. Unless we are talking about black owned factories or money that will turn us into producers instead of consumers then it is worthless.

As far as AIDS testing it sounds good but I frankly don’t trust our government these people attempted to sterilize black women here and sponsored the sterilization of poor women in Puerto Rico and nothing has happened to make me think they are anymore moral today then they were then.

4 08 2008

Another Marriage thing
An HIV/AIDS test is offered, not mandatory, only Syphillis and the like are. I think if they test blood in certain states anyway, they should test for HIV/AIDS and be done with it. New immigrants are tested. If you travel to certain countries, you’re tested. It’s not a violation of privacy in certain situations.

4 08 2008
brran1

@b4prez

That’s easy. Take the money meant for reparations and give it to the school districts, so that the district can spend more $$ per student and increase the amount of extracurriculars and improve the curriculum.

4 08 2008
Jo

@B4Prez: I get what you’re saying and I agree with it. But black businesses can’t start without money. And it’s hard to get money as a black person if the 2520 who approves loans at the corner bank is sitting across the table from you and only seeing a large red number.

Where are the black run banks? I suppose we’d have more of them if we had the money to invest in them. Where are the black creditors? I suppose we’d see more of them if they could get hired easily. I understand that we need to build our own infrastructure and I’d support that. That’s what the Black Pages are for. I’m just saying that it’s hard to build that infrastructure, when someone else is selling the pipes.

4 08 2008
Bailey Blues

I agree with Obama. I don’t think Black Americans should be given a check. Instead, the government should invest money in improving our schools and getting more jobs (or more skills) to Black Americans.

With that said, I bet if they did decide to give out checks, all these people claiming other races (“I’m only 1/8 black since I’m mixed with Chinese, Italian, Irish and Indian”), will quickly jump back to their black side….

4 08 2008
Jen

@B4Prez – I think no-strings-attached grants should be given to people who want to found schools for Black children. Obviously, all the money would have to be put into the school, but I don’t think there should be an excess of limits on where the money goes within the school or what or how the school must teach or how it hires.

@brran1 – I disagree with this idea that Black people don’t stick together in this country. I think we support one another more than any other group in this country with the possible exception of Jews. Black people are unabashedly for Black people in a way that I’ve observed among no other subculture in America.

@brran1:

You’re right, but I feel that a big part of that whole ‘crabs in a barrel’ mentality is becuase so many have nothing. Blacks always get a bad rap for ‘not supporting/hating on’ each other, but it’s because we’re the group who got completely shtted on by this country.

If u take a group of 10 homeless ppl, and give two of them food, do u really think the other 8 are going to hang around and watch the 2 eat and enjoy their food?

If the face of Black America changed to one where ppl were prosperous (see: taking advantage of opportunities) then I truly think a lot of that ‘hate’ would be void.

We will also find out that the number of STDs among all AMERICANS is much higher then previously thought. The reason why the black number seems so high is because there results are reported by clinics were as white or more affluent people go to private doctors and they are not reported.

The information should only be provided to the person. And the results should be reported by as a general number to determine the true spread of the epidemic. thousands if not millions of lives would be saved and it would help stop the spread….

I asked that question because I wanted to see if everyone really thought that more money in a school is going to bring about the most change. I personally don’t think that’s the case. I think, generally speaking, the kids who are going to learn, are going to learn. True, many school need more books and supplies, but the kids have to know how to read those books in order to benefit.

For example, one of the biggest things an inner-city school could do with a chunk of money is to put day cares in schools. I know many ppl are going to think that’s crazy, but my point is that if you don’t tackle the reasons why kids aren’t getting to school and learning, a bunch of new supplies carries no weight.

Jen – but Blacks are usually for Blacks in word, not in deed. We’re all talk most of the time.

4 08 2008
Monie

Reparations are meant to repair damage. So first American would have to figure out what damage has been caused because of Slavery and Jim Crow.

Once that is done then what would repair. Money won’t necessarily repair the damage that slavery and Jim Crow has done.

Also their is, as most of you know, a precedent for reparations to be paid. Native Americans have received reparations (land, gambling rights); Japanese Americans also received reparations for their internment.

So why not us?

I think that Affirmative Action WAS a great way to pay reparations. Unfortunately it has been corrupted so that White women benefit more than African Americans. Also other minority groups have been allowed to benefit from it.

But after only a few decades White people are tired of the playing field being leveled. So as we speak several states are trying to repeal Affirmative Action. We, African Americans, should be fighting for Affirmative Action, especially in education. But sadly we aren’t.

So why even debate reparations if we aren’t willing to fight for the reparations that were already available to us?

When I look around at my peers, Black people are absolutely more active in our communities than other races are, and if you looked around, I’m sure you’d notice the same.

email privacy is one thing. Having a doctor poke with you a needle is quite another. I was referrring to medical privacy. You have the right to die and procreate…these are fundamental rights…as is the right to refuse medical treatment. Do you REALLY want the government telling you when and what to do with your body?

If it would work the way you propose, I would be all for it. However, it will not. Nothing in this country ever has. People use that information for thier own political agendas. This, my friend, is the American way. That is the only reason why that would not work, much less even be seriously proposed.

@ Esquire – I don’t believe such a program would be effective, either. So many Black Americans are “overweight” because of lazy ass BMI calculations that ignore the greater muscle mass among Blacks relative to whites and other general differences in body makeup.

When I hear shit about government support based on health screening and care, all I can think of is WIC and how WACK that fucking program is. I mean, I am a grown woman with six years of undergraduate and graduate education and I have to sit there and miss class to listen to some bored woman tell me it is better to give my child an apple than cake in order to get some coupons for some formula.

Reparations are not the way to resolve he social ills against Black people. AS many posters stated before, it would give the rest of society a reason to tell Blacks to get over slavery. What the government should spend money on is revamping the educational system and making sure all individuals regardless of socio-economics has access to the best educational resources out there. Education is the way for individuals to move up economically. It is the essential foundation needed to do well in this society. When children aren’t given the basics they already fall behind.

This breeds dependency, if you look at what happened to the Native Americans, aside from genocide, one of the most destructive things that happened in that society was when they became completely dependent on the US government after having their land taken.

If anything we need industry, if they opened factories in black communities whose complete ownership would eventually be turned over to the community, that built alternative energy products and trained black people to operate these factories it would be more beneficial and self-sustaining; not to mention producing something that this country badly needs.

Americans in general are fat because they eat too much food and aren’t mobile. Obesity isn’t just a Black thing at all but an American issue. Americans are lazy and want to do things the easy way which is why the fad diets make millions of dollars per year. We lack discipline and eat our damn feelings instead of dealing with out issues in a constructive way. As someone who has traveled through out improvised countries and seeing people who live on less than 500 calories a day, I’m really disgusted when I see Americans just stuffing their faces to feel the empty void in their lives. Hell I’m no where near fat and I found myself to be grossed out about my little weight gain. Working all the time isn’t an excuse because at the end of the day I have control over what I eat. If I have time to go on the net to bullshit, I can take that 30minutes to a 1 to go running. My dad has a zero tolerance for fat people. He hates them and makes no apologies about it. Why are they worth considering in a discussion geared toward the improvement of our communities? “Reparations” as the idea currently stands is, in my humble opinion, of the Devil. There are far too many variables (who even gets money, how much do they get, etc.), and just giving people a large chunk of money and saying “do as you will” with no check and balance system with regard to fiscal responsibility is trouble looking for somewhere to happen. I heartily co-sign with the sentiments regarding investing the money into schools and communities and programs that address the root of the problems. As a former teacher and the child of a teacher I have seen first hand the disparity within the education system and until it changes the whole concept of no child left behind is essentially the equivalent of putting a band aid on a broken leg. Long term investments in education, social responsibility, health awareness, and things of that nature would be in my mind a better form of reparations.

With respect to mandated medical testing, that is a slippery slope and I am of two minds on that point. On the one hand I do not believe that any government has the right to legislate a person’s body or mandate what they must do to/with it. On the other hand I know people who have contracted STD’s from partners and it could have been prevented. While I still do not believe in mandated testing, I think that awareness goes a long way towards prevention and STD and AIDS testing should be part of the general medical check up.

“I agree with you for the most part, but I still think that ignoring physical differences between Black and white body makeup causes the obesity problem within our community to be overstated. The points are not mutually exclusive.”

I can’t say whether or not the problem is actually overstated. All I can say is that (anecdotally-speaking) when I go out into black venues, well over half the people I see are visibly overweight. You don’t even need to get them on a scale to notice it. The Serena Williams types are certainly out there – but they’re a rarity and, if they’re the cause of the overstatement of black obesity, then the overstatement isn’t very significant.

If you were to condense the situation to 100 black women (I’m excluding black men, because more fat dudes = less competition for me):

100 black women total
According to statistics: 50 of them are overweight
In actuality: 40 of them are overweight, 10 have Serena Williams Complex
Anecodtally:20 of the overweight 40 claim SW Complex

That’s 20% of the population that isn’t getting help because they refuse to even acknowledge the problem.

I take an ‘ends justifies the means’ stance on the obesity issue because it isn’t as socially damning as other skewed statistics like violent crimes and drug use. People need to panic about this, and an overstatement of the problem could be a blessing in disguise.

What reperations could America possibly give us that could even scratch the surface of what has been done to us for centuries? What dollar amount can you place on what started with the Middle Passage and continues with Sean Bell? A million dollars? A billion? Fuck, they’d have to turn the entire country over to us (no, electing Obama don’t count). And we’d then lose it in a dice game with Germany, right?

I support reperations, but I do agree that White people will say “and we are done!” afterwards. HOWEVER, y’all do know that White people will feel that the work is “done” if Obama is elected. “Gee golly wiz, Shanika. How can this be a racist country? We have a Black president for christsakes!”

My frustration with a lot of Black people is that we have become a community of excuses. Granted that as a group we are subjected to institutional and systematic discrimination but on the same token we still have a choice to work hard and try to make a better life for our families. Nowadays parents aren’t taking a proactive role in making sure their kids are hitting the books instead of the street. We are encouraging our boys that athletics, street life, and entertainment are the avenues to prosperity. Our young women don’t have any damn standards and fall for the first loser that gives them a smile. What happened and why aren’t people taking a real look at our communities instead of blaming the rest of the world? Reparations and government assistance will not fix the plight going on within the Black community unless MINDSETS are changed. You can’t give someone 100 grand who has no concept of money management. As the saying goes, give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime (or something like that)

1. TB is altogether easier to catch than HIV… but its still pretty hard to catch. You need to get into whether the person has an infectious form (pulmonary) of the disease and it also depends on how long you were exposed.

2. TB infection and diease are not the same thing. You can be infected (i.e. have a positve PPD) and NEVER get sick or be able to make anyone else sick. Way more people are infected with TB than HIV and don’t know it– but they only have a 10% chance of getting sick over their entire lifetime. HOWEVER, you are more likey to become sick from TB infection if you are HIV positive/immunosupressed in any way (diabetes, corticosteroids, recent surgery etc). TB is tricky that way.

3. TB testing is NOT FEDERALLY MANDATED ANYWHERE (even public schools) unless you are a) a recent immigrant from a country where TB is endemic, b) a person considered to be at high risk for TB infection– health care worker, correcional facility employee, contact to an active infectious case, etc. or c) have suspected disease without a documented PPD result.

@brran1 – no, dear. If your goal is to help the community, you should start by helping those who want to be helped, not by griping about those whom you cannot.

Right Muse,

I said that earlier..TB testing is not required for homeschoolers, COLLEGE, or private schoolers.

Thats a lot of people.

The point is…you cant make someone take pills, get stuck with needles. Not cool.

4 08 2008
brran1

@ Jen: Since when does stating fact equate with griping? Last time I checked, it did not.

I agree that those that want help should be helped first, but if we want to influence some type of change, you have to change the thought process of those that think they have it figured out already. That way it’ll give future generations a fighting chance.

4 08 2008
Jen

@SBPH, I think you are almost right about the idea that “20% of the population that isn’t getting help because they refuse to even acknowledge the problem.”

I honestly think people would eat healthier if they could. It is just expensive and time-consuming to eat properly. My eating habits go to hell when I am busy.

Anyway, I think this refusal to acknowledge the problem is an American issue that is only slightly aggravated by Black culture and its preference for women that are, frankly (don’t tase me, bro), somewhat overweight.

4 08 2008
Sister Toldja

Weight and class are tied as well. You won’t see many morbidly obese White women in the ‘shopping at Bendels, living on the Upper West Side” crew, but go to where the poor White folks are and you will see plenty of them. However, there is a great deviation here when it comes to Blacks. While middle and upper class Blacks seem to work harder than poorer and/or uneducated ones to stay fit, obesity is still somewhat acceptable in the former group:

My theory:
1) many “successful” Blacks are from humble begginings, they are not so culturally different than poorer Black folks, who condone obesity (not all poor Blacks do, obvs).

2) Our standards of beauty are different than thin-obsessed Whites. While both Black AND White American cultures place beauty before health (see the scores of White women I would deem to be “decidedly anorexic”), White female beauty places a high value on thinness and physical fitness, whereas Black female beauty is based on tits, hips, asses and thighs, all of which can stand in lovely proportions on an overweight woman.

I don’t think we need to obsess over being skinny like the 2520s, I just think that every person everywhere should make sure that they eat like they have some sense and have a consistent workout routine in their lives. You don’t have to run a marathon, just be able to run PERIOD.

The article had no idea what it really wants to say, nor does the network. Friday they said that McCain and Obama were neck and neck, because whie Americans don’t want to support Mr. War Vet, they also don’t want to support an underexperienced politician (read: NIGGA). Like they cited in the article: this has been a stance of Obama’s since his statewide race for Senator. Reparations won’t help, and by improving ‘inner’ city education and healthcare, blacks can have a little come up. Nothing, however, will ever 100% take away from centuries of racism that’s STILL going on today, so what’s the hullabaloo about? I mean, that tax rebate was just a little salve for a short term, not an end all to be all for the sucky ass ecomony.

And Congress just voted on whether or not to apologize?! WTF?

4 08 2008
B4Prez

@ST – I couldn’t agree more. YT’s are all ready practicing how they’re going to say that racism is over if Obama wins. They could at least cut me a check b4 they say it….I’m just sayin.

And Chris is right w/ that theory, typically any black venue will have 50 fat ppl out of 100 total ppl. What I will say though, is that physical fitness is honestly still a pretty new concept to many black ppl. It’s always been ‘good’ to have some ‘extra meat on ur bones’, by their standards. Everything in soul food is fattening and artery clogging (thanks slavery, where’s my check) and eating healthy and exercising after working and beating bad ass kids all day is still new. I’m not denying the basic FACT that it’s time for change, in more ways than 1, but I see why it’s so hard to scratch this itch.

BTW, I’m not fat AT ALL! Just in case sum1 was ready to try me.

Fat people are gross. I appreciate every fat person at the gym who is actually sweating and trying to lose their flab. I hate fat people at the gym who are just kind of walking along on a treadmill or slowly bicycling or pedaling slowly on an elliptical. You aren’t going to lose fat if you don’t sweat. So SWEAT dammit!

By the way, I am not fat at all. As a matter of fact, I’m in great shape. Although I think every one of the regular commentors knows that.

4 08 2008
Jen

brran1, what you said was ugly, irrelevant and arbitrary. You are doing a good job at cleaning your BS up, but you really don’t have to take it any further. I called you out a little more rudely than I should have, but that’s me. Stop bitching about how Black people don’t help one another when that is a lie from the devil. Stop immediately playing the lazy Negro trump card in discussions of problems with our community. Most poor Blacks are as they are because they lack education and opportunity, not because they are lazy. The end. Agree or agree to disagree. All I was saying is that we have too many real problems for you to be showcasing the least of these.

I agree with ST 100%. I am terribly out of shape. I could not run around a city block one time if Tyra Banks and Tina Knowles were chasing me with a lacefront wig and a crate of relaxer. But, I find it difficult to begin working out because Black men are constantly telling me I need to gain weight and eat something.

4 08 2008
Muse

Maybe it’s me but I don’t know too many black men who equate being fat to having curves. In fact Black people tend to confuse the two. Fat rolls are not curves. I think Black men in general like women with healthy bodies. Hell men, even the white ones, like a fit woman who has a hips, ass, and nice breasts. I’m not sure where the lines between being fat and curvy got blurred.

I’m torn on the reparations issue because it’s symbolic to me: the government became rich of my ancestor’s labor and I deserve something in return. I will be paying off law school loans for the rest of my life, while Becky’s parents footed the entire bill. For that, an apology is not enough. It’s actually a fkcing insult to me. I wish Dave Chappelle was still on the air to tackle that scene– Congressional apology.

But yeah, a lump sum is not going to cut it either…. It won’t address the deep-rooted issued in the community the same way that health care and education will. Plus, whoever commented that we’d have to estimate “how many hours our ancestors worked….” ummm… that is ridiculous. IT WAS MUFUCKIN SLAVERY!!! THEY WORKED LIKE SLAVES!! So reparations by money is not a good idea either.

But we are still owed 40 acres, so I think land grants could be in order…. Land grants with gardens and such… I don’t know. Something, though. We deserve something.

4 08 2008
Esquire

Tomato,
This happens all the time. If you begin saying, AIDS is a crucial problem lets have mandatory testing. This argument can AND WILL be used to test other things…such as diabetes (crucial problem) STDS (huge problem) heart disease, sickle cell…etc…

Lets test babies for genetic deficiencies…and then lets kill thier little asses off. Lets see how many AIDS babies there are then lets use them and run experimental drugs on them.

This is why people will fight you tooth and nail not to require this. Basing arguments on other arguments to do things is the entire foundation of legal history. Thats what we DO. We take lil fractions of an ideal and try to apply it to what we WANT to make it seem logical..(sometimes it is…sometimes it isnt)

I.E. Cloning dogs is okay…see we did it…So cloning Humans is okay….negative.

4 08 2008
Jo

There’s a very easy way to tell who is overweight and who isn’t. It’s commonly known as the “tire test”. If your waste/gut is wider than your bust/butt, you’re in trouble.

Large fat deposits around the waste are considered a dead give-away by most medical professionals.

LOL on fat rolls not being curves. That is the truth full stop. The now ex-boyfriend has been complimenting me as of late because i’ve been working out constantly (1 hour classes at the gym every day for two weeks and various toning classes interspersed) and my legs are bigger than they used to be but they are all muscle which I don’t like personally so I’ve started doing more yoga.

@Jen: Ugly, irrelevant, and arbitrary? Ok. If you say so.

The only one spitting BS here is you. You make it seem as if my comments were geared towards ALL black people (including myself) which they were not.

And far as calling me out on something, you did nothing of the sort because I was mentioning something I have seen with my own eyes.

4 08 2008

Cloning humans will never happen. Ever. Unless someone puts up a lot of their private funds and does it illegally because it’ll never be legal in the United States, there are way too many problems and variables related to cloning a human.

I plan on testing my babies for genetic problems before they come out.

Diabetes is a crucial problem and should be tested for as is heart disease. Sickle cell isn’t that HUGE of a problem but it would be good if there was testing for it. I don’t see why letting a person know they have these problems or not is a bad thing.

This is how you know if you’re fat. Thanks Chris

The SBPH Fatass Test

Section 1 – If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you have failed the fatass test. Do not bother moving on to Section 2 of the fatass test.

1.) When standing, do you have to bend over to see your toes or penis?
2.) Have you ever been offered a red sweater and a job as the ‘Kool-Aid Man’?
3.) Does your navel look like a sad face?
4.) Do you have more than 1 chin?
5.) Do you have pockets even when you’re completely naked?
6.) Do you roll out of bed instead of jumping out of bed?
7.) Do you fall into chairs rather than sitting down in a controlled manner?
8.) When you tell children you don’t have chocolate, do they call you a liar?
9.) When you put on tight jeans, does ANY flesh roll out below the top of the pants?
10.) Do you find this test offensive?

If you said ‘No’ to all these, proceed to section 2.

Section 2

Scoring Guide:

0 – 2 ‘Yes’ Responses: You are wonderfully healthy. If you are a girl, call me.
3 – 4 ‘Yes’ Responses: You’re “a chicken box away”. Watch yourself
5 – 10 ‘Yes’ Responses: Put down the fork

1.) Is a 2 mile non-stop run beyond your physical abilities today?
2.) Do you eat more than 3000 calories a day?
3.) Do you define walking as a workout?
4.) Do you think grape jelly counts as a fruit?
5.) Do you hate being on top during sex?
6.) Do people hate you being on top during sex?
7.) Is a treadmill an ancient type of crane?
8.) Does the thought of a ‘running’ date enrage you?
9.) Are you more than 50% likely to take the elevator less than five stories up?
10.) Do you find this test offensive?

This had me dying so I figured it was a good excuse to get a few more laughs out of it.

@Tomatohead – Black people are already disadvantaged when it comes to acquiring adequate health benefits, even when adjustments are made for class and income. I think the AIDS thing would worsen that problem. The idea of the government manning that sort of sensitive information freaks me out.

thats exactly my point. The govt will begin testing for shit that they shouldnt. What concerns is me is how they will use the data. Yea, it seems like for good. But there is a real potential for this to be a scarlet letter.

Do you know the formula for where they put prisons? they combine the socioeconomic class, the education scores, and the DRUG USE RATES. Then they stick the prison near those communities. Wonder why there’s no prison near the Hamptons?

@ Riz- I agree….to an extent. I think to be anorexic/bulimic is just as bad as to be severly overweight. And while I think our self image has allowed us to see beauty beyond a size 2, which is excellent, we cannot accept a size 22 and defend it with “but I LOOK good”.

Muse- You are in LA, educated, etc. The “Chrises” may dominate the circles we run in, but there are plenty of Black men (across socio-economic groups) who like big women. Many would stop short of say, Monique big, but they would find a sturdy size 18 gal quite fetching. Especially if she had tits and ass. I met a guy and didn’t see him for months, over which I had lost about 25 pounds. When I saw him again, he was suprised that I had lost weight and didn’t understand why I would do so. He didn’t discourage me from dropping pounds, but he said I was “fine before”. Richard Posner, a Univ. of Chicago Law School professor — very well respected though slightly insane economics/law expert — wrote a paper recently about obesity. ONe of his more interesting points was that a majority of black women are overweight because unlike white women, black women don’t have as much economic or social incentive to remain thin. For white women, being thin means snagging a higher-earning man and having higher social status. For a black woman, being thin only slightly increases your chances of getting such a man because the supply of such black men is so much smaller. So when you weight (pun intended) all the balances, then it’s probably easier to just have that second cheeseburger and not sweat out your perm cuz you’re still not very likely to get that rich dude who’s going to set you up in that big house in the burbs anyway.

Sorry, but fck Posner. His theories strips humans of their humanity. He needs to stay completely out of race relations because, contrary to his own bloated sense of self– not every single societal ill can be traced to law and economics. And even if it can, then what solutions does he offer? Does Posner support reparations? He is from the shool of thought who ignores race and makes everything merely “economic…” Like all those people who say Katrina had nothing to do with race, but only money.

I don’t buy it.

Going off topic of the present conversation (but back to the original), pouring money into inner city schools would be a great idea. Unfortunately, there may be some problems with that.

1. Too much money would likely be focused on secondary schools or higher ed where it’s not as helpful. In California, kids can get straight Fs for all of junior high and thanks to social promotion, advance to 9th grade (because little Johnny’s feelings will be hurt and he’ll be ostracized if all his friends move on without him…nevermind the clowning for being an illiterate idiot). Money should be focused on reforming and revamping elementary and junior high so the kids have a strong foundation for high school and ultimately, more prepared for college.

2. Even if we do give schools the money, what’s the incentive to make the parents give a shit and be participatory in the process? Dammit if, at Back to School Night, I don’t ALWAYS get the parents of the kids who are getting straight As and NEVER see the parents of the kid who is getting Fails and is a disciplinary problem. One of the main things that stopped me from cuttin’ up when I was younger was the threat of an ass whoopin from my mom (hell, even now!). Many kids don’t fear that — in fact, those little fuckers run their parents. At least can we give teachers permission to pop a kid in the mouth if s/he’s talkin’ shit? I’ve been tempted. I’m just sayin.

3. Inner city teachers should get paid more. Maybe this would attract more of the best and brightest to areas that could really use some help. People bitch about teachers and say they don’t deserve more money, but as an inner city teacher (one who’s good, not one of those worksheet/movie playing motherfuckers), I know that I put in a solid day’s work and was usually the last one leaving school. People who are talented in their respective fields aren’t going into a profession where they are underpaid (relative to other industries) and have to deal with mega bullshit.

4. Clean up the damn neighborhoods. No more than two blocks away from my school is the neighborhood “ho stroll.” Gang violence is real and a constant threat (nevermind the kids who romanticize it and are total poseurs).

5. HEALTHY CHOICES! I don’t know if anyone’s ever been to a school cafeteria for schools where the large majority of students are on free/reduced lunch, but it makes me sick. The food is disgusting. The meat has to be like prison grade or worse. The choices are NOT healthy. So what happens? Kids leave school hungry and within a block or two, they hit no less than 5 different fast food chains. Too easy to make a bad choice. Give them healthful, nutritious food at school and 1) maybe we can help the obesity epidemic, and 2) maybe they’ll actually have more energy and focus in class, thus improving learning. I do have to say that California was on the right track with getting rid of soda machines and junk food vending machines at school, but then took a step back with what they have now. Kids do NOT need Gatorade — that shit is just as sugary as soda. Kids do NOT need a Cup o’ Noodles machine (true story, we have one at my school).

All that said, if SBPH Industries ever wants to open a school, please make me principal because I will run that shit with military precision and

To keep it short…why cut high schools out of the loop…yes it does suck that kids get there and can hardly read. However, what about the kids there who will take advantage of what you place at their finger tips? Plus, now that those kids skated and got passed along into high school…shouldn’t there be more resources for them at that level. And you are spot-on regarding the free/reduced lunch. My niece told me her high school (which used to be my high school) has like 3 choices EVERYday: Pizza, nachos, or fries. W…T…F. Co-sign Amadeo,

There are kids who are just average in high school. And they can get into a college if someone helps them out– tells them what classes to take and what forms to fill out. This is important because without that type of help, I wouldn’t have made it into college.

I know that we always focus on the emergency situations in our community, and don’t get me wrong– kids who don’t know how to read NEED our help, no doubt. But that quiet kid who doesn’t get into trouble, or isn’t a superstar needs help too. And there are a lot of those out there.

Public school needs help at every level.

and COSIGN to PAYING TEACHERS MORE!!!!

4 08 2008
Amadeo

4 08 2008

I just stand by the notion that the kids who are going to learn are going to learn. I can’t speak for those who went to ‘privileged’ schools, but if you went to ‘around the way’ elementary school like me, from that age you all ready see that there’s nothing short of beating azz that the teacher could do to get some kids to do their work and behave. Not surprisingly, these are the kids who had all of the at home problems.

Thus, I say that by allotting more funds to get the kids who DO get through HS, on to college, the money will probably be better used. I knew plenty of kids in HS who didn’t go onto college simply because it was a financial reality for them.

4 08 2008
joy

@Amadeo – “To keep it short…why cut high schools out of the loop”

Nah, I’m not saying to cut high schools completely out of the loop, but high schools (at least in CA) already get a significant cut of funding just to get kids to pass simple ass tests that they should be able to pass. So, in some respect, the resources for the GED kids that you mention are already there. I do think a plurality of the money should go to the lower and middle grades, but there are still improvements that require money at the high school level. If we’re talking solely high school level, I’d give more money to teachers (both pay rate AND for hiring so there are more elective choices as well as AP courses), MASSIVE facilities upgrades, and revamped school schedule (to include mandatory tutorials, possibly partnering with for-profit tutoring companies). This is all in addition to the stuff I mentioned above.

Then maybe we can stop pretending that we’re doing a good job educating our kids just because some shiny faced 2520 from Yale swooped in with Teach for America for 2 years and pretended to give a shit about the kids to boost their chances at getting into medical school.

4 08 2008

“But that quiet kid who doesn’t get into trouble, or isn’t a superstar needs help too. And there are a lot of those out there.”

That is the truth. How does the saying go again? “The squeaky wheel gets the oil”? Well what about the other wheels that are not making any noise?

Public schools do need help at all levels. From paying better salaries across the board in all districts to attract a higher caliber of teacher, to replacing some of the antiquated leadership and procedures of the various Boards of Education.

To Joy and B4Prez, when we were kids my parents would regularly tell the teachers that they had permission to “do whatever was needed” should we act a fool in class, or notify them immediately so they could come and handle it (or send grandma). I kept my mouth shut and did what I had to do in school because I lived in perpetual fear of my crazy Bajan mother coming to the school to light my behind up if I did something wrong.

Reparation is not the same thing as giving money to public school and for health care. They shouldn’t even used in the same topic. Public school and health care funding is just something that should happen to better the future of America.
I have mixed emotion about reparations. If it happened a while back it would have worked, it just wouldn’t fly right now. Most blacks can’t even trace their history past there great grandma. @ B4

I was one of those kids that was going to learn anyway…however my school was crappy so alot of my learning was on my on. If my school had been better I could have learned a lot more. Not to mention I was in a class where the teacher had to spend more time dealing with those who had problems at home…until around 11th and 12th grade. However, my SAT score could have been higher then it was. If there were less distractions (and if they had been offered – hence money needed) I could have had AP courses. If a school has the money it can afford to separate those kids and deal with them and their issues without stopping class for everyone. Dealing with them requires more resources and more staff. So no matter the mindstate, home situation or ability of a student…the school still needs more funds.

@amadeo –

I wasn’t saying that schools don’t need more money so much as saying that just pumping money into schools w/o getting to the bottom line isn’t going to cut it. For middle and hs i went to a brand new arts magnet school which was actually the best public school in the city. However, we still had all of those knuckleheads and badazzes, esp with all of the sibling admission programs. Now we have to deal with Tyvante and his bad ass lil brother Javonte…all at a brand new school.

@laurel – same thing happened when i was in 7th grade…at the beaurtifully funded magnet school. Most kids bring their problems from home and into the school, whether it’s a magnet or ‘Lean on Me’ High.

@amadeo – I meant to say that I do understand where you’re coming from with the funding thing.

@ Laurel,

On second thought, maybe Posner had a point. Don’t get me wrong, I HATE Posner, but I just got back from Starbucks, where this FOINE man works. He always hooks me up with extra coffee, so clearly, he taps into my Pavlovian response to caffeine. Maybe that’s why I’m in love. But I never really pop at him– I feel all shy when he talks to me.

All day, I’ve been trying to motivate myself to go work out, but I don’t really feel like it. After seeing this dude, who gave me an extra espresso shot, you’d think that I’d sprint to the treadmill, just in case he’s really interested and not just being polite. But in the back of my head, I’m like: (a) he works at Starbucks, and violates my first rule of dating (huge discrepancy in earning potential always leads to a man acting a fool later on) and (b) he probably has a gf/baby momma/ issues towards Black women. So I’m always nice and polite when he engages me in conversation, but I never do anything about it… And I wrote this instead of going to go work out.

So maybe Posner, the asshole that he is, might be on to something.

Fck it, I’m going to go do some leg raises.

I feel very sorry for anyone who went to underfunded schools, or crappy schools altogether. I didn’t have that experience as I went to charter schools all of my life out in Santa Monica, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades. All of my schools pressed going to college (we had PSAT stuff in elementary school), my high school was very lucky to have a college center where every student was required to attend a meeting with their college counselor and get help with their applications to schools (all of the counselors were parent volunteers) and I took all honors and AP classes from 6th grade on. Had I not gone to college, I would have been an idiot.

But I was very very lucky. There were many kids who were in remedial classes who did not go to college and I always felt that those kids were lazy until I came to college and learned that “laziness”, more often than not, is NOT a factor in whether kids do well or not. It’s their fucked up parents, fucked up living situations and fucked up ideas about life that keep them behind. If someone were to give out reparations I would start from the bottom up; give money to elementary schools, have after school programs for kids so they can get help with their homework and have a sanctuary away from their shitty lives at home, have proper school lunches and breakfasts.

4 08 2008
TomatoHead

And like some people said, of course there are going to be those kids in class who refuse to learn or just want to be disruptive but in my classes, those kids were in the minority. I feel that if given a better chance at having a great school career starting with the first step in school, those “bad azz” kids might be better because they are being pushed by someone, anyone.

This is so off topic to reparations, fat people, pre nups, etc… but I want to throw out a quick questions to some of the folks here at SBPH:

Do you feel obligated to help your less fortunate family members if you are well off financially? What if you have a cousin who stays broke and is always “borrowing” money or an aunt who just can’t seem to get it together. Is it okay to say no even if you hae the means? What are your boundaries about money when it comes to family?

NO. My grandma..yes. She’s 89 and doesnt work and loves me hard. My moochin cousins? NO. You had the same opportunities as I did. AND why are your nails done as you ask me for 20 bucks.
I have a friend who STAYS broke. but she also stays at the hair/nail salon. Male cousins who have $6000 rims on thier 1993 buicks. FUCK NO you cant have it. I earned it. And you will neva pay me back. I used to “lend” money. I aint seen a dime and am about 7000 poorer for doing it.

The only sort of reparations I’m for come in the form of paying off student loans.

I also find it odd that most high schools/some colleges do not teach personal finance/investing. This should be a given.

I also like the concept of investing in educational institutions/communities.

But, I am also of the notion that government screws up everything and perhaps it’s time that more programs that are/were once seen as a government-administered given become community-privatized, thus making American citizens more responsible for the state of their surroundings, welfare and future.

There were some other concepts I glanced over in the comments:

I generally agree with Landon but stop short at all the government administered stuff. I’m with Esquire on most issues of government interference, especially when it comes to health.

On Fat; healthy food is expensive. After my first year of college I decided to pursue better health. I hated it but eventually did budget for healthier vittles. So, as far as folks with less income being less healthy, well, if there’s a big mac for $0.99 versus grapes for $2.99/lb then there’s substance to why many would opt for the big mac. Plus, ever notice when you’re really busy at work/studying and hella hungry you’ll come to find healthy places don’t deliver? Or, if they do, it’s in a certain mile radius and there’s a $3.00 delivery fee with $20 minimum order. Pisses me off.

4 08 2008
TomatoHead

No. My family is very very small and we give money to each other, we don’t lend it. If someone needs money, they are given money. But we only do this because there are a whopping 4 of us.

If I had a larger family, hell no would I lend money to family members unless they were in a sticky financial situation that wasn’t really their fault i.e. staggering medical bill, need a new roof, need house painted, need a car because theirs got mangled in an accident…stuff like that. Lending 20 bucks or 100 bucks is not the business. That kind of shit will never help the idiot family member who always finds themselves in the red.

Ain’t that some sh%t? I’ve family members who’ve taken advantage of immediately family members just the same. Personally, I’m dealing with that stuff now. On the one hand, you want to raise folks up and help out your own-follow that ‘keep it in the family’ concept, on the other, some will just take you for everything you’ve got. At some point you gotta say no.

I can only speak from my experiences but I think that’s also been tearing at black folks in general.

4 08 2008
TomatoHead

zoso, I totally agree with everything you said. Financial planning should be a class taught at every college/high school in the country. And hell yes healthy food is expensive. The only reason I’ve been staying healthy is because I eat the organic food at the dining hall, Odwalla bars and drink Dasani by the liter (I had two liters yesterday). I think Berkeley has the only dining halls in teh country that have all-organic salad bars and dressings and do not use transfats in any of their food.

When I tried getting healthy food from the grocery store, I was spending upwards of $100 a week on two bags of groceries. That shit is incredibly stupid when i can buy 350 points for dining hall food for $300 and it lasts me all semester.

I just wish there were more options for poor people with everything but I guess that is just one of the many problems “society” faces.

That’s not just a no. That’s a HELL NO. I don’t even loan money to my sister and she’s on the same triflin’ tip. Bitching about her rent going up $25, then I find out she got a new car (which is a bigger gas guzzler, so she’s gonna stay broke), got her tattoo filled in, etc. I’m not even tryna hear it. I do not loan money to family, period. The saying I’ve always heard (and that I agree with) is don’t lend money unless you can afford — and are willing — to never have it paid back.

I came into some money maybe 10 years ago, and people came crawling out of the woodworks to ask for stuff. Each time I let them know that while I’d love to help out monetarily, I wouldn’t be able to do so…but I would help them brainstorm a solution. Teach a man to fish and all that 🙂

I have another relative who makes about 200k per year, can’t manage money to save her life. I’ve tried to help her out and get a financial plan but she refuses to stick with it. She has no savings, no investments, rents an apartment, and spends, spends, spends. She continues to max our her credit cards and she only pays the minimum. Last time I looked at her financial porfolio she had about 120k in credit card debt, 20k in student loans, and only 5k in savings. SMDH.

@TH: I’m actually re-considering going to campus dining halls because groceries are becoming more expensive. Woe is the dollar.

Also, I’m going back and forth on organic. The guys I used to live with (I’m female), swore by organic and that’s all they would eat but I’m still not sure if it’s that much better for the environment, or really so much better for personal consumption. I’m trying to do some research but much is inconclusive (other than the pesticide free fruit). I love grapes!

@Zoso – ITA with you about the expense of eating healthfully. I’ve only recently found places where it’s possible to do so more cheaply, but of course, it means you have to make 50-11 stops at different stores. My newest “discovery” is Jewish and Armenian supermarkets. They sell produce super cheap. A good farmer’s market can also have some things more cheap than a supermarket. These kinds of things take better planning and more time, but are doable.

Teaching kids that Flaming Hot Cheetos aren’t a food group would be a good start, too 🙂

@TH – Berkeley is on point! I don’t think UCLA had organic food like that, but they do have a lot of healthy options (including sushi) for people to choose from. No excuses.

Muse your 200k a year relative is retarded. How in the hell do you squander 200k in a year? I had about 25k come into my hands and I didn’t get through all of it until a year after I got it (although blowing through that much in a year is sad, I spent it on a cruise with my family, first class tickets back to LA from Florida with the family and RENT. Rent is super expensive in my area, I think I paid upwards of $7000 in rent while in school. I could stay in the dorms but who wants that headache?

4 08 2008
Amadeo

I have a list of people I’m willing to loan money to. If you cut off 7 fingers I could still count them out. I choose these 3 because they only ask when they need it and they always pay me back. My man got shot in the leg in DC in November so he can’t work because of the nerve damage. I’ve had no issue giving him money (a few hundred so far) because he is one of those three.

@ Joy

The GED situation is sad…most of the kids that do drop out are operating on such low levels that they have a hard time getting up to par to take the test. I do agree with heavy upgrades to elementary and middle…but high school needs serious funds to deal with the kids that are there who got passed along.

I only want that in because i love HER… I dont want her to have bad health and maintaining your weight does not guarantee GOOD Health but it does increase your chances of living longer and better. Plus if she is in shape that sets a better example for my children plus my children would have healthier life styles… I am only want that in to help ensure my family is healthy… is that so SELFISH OF ME?

4 08 2008
zoso

@ Landon

At first I thought that was mighty vain but from the health perspective it’s not so bad. I mean, most marriages struggle when it comes to money, so health expenses on account of bad eating/lifestyle habits would definitely present financial issues, particularly avoidable financial problems… I still don’t know if that’s pre nup material though. Shouldn’t that be more a mutual understanding and trust between the two of you that out weighs a physical contract… dunno.

4 08 2008
Landon

everything is mutual until its too late. nothing wrong with having something on paper… everything is always cool until someone wants half…

and to be honest a lot of marriages fall apart when one of the parties lets them self go and the other i no longer attracted…

but at the end i want a healthy family! I understand a woman naturally gains weight after children, but that does not mean you do not hit the gym and try to stay healthy.

5 08 2008
TomatoHead

Landon tells the truth. I never want to be fat “because I had kids”. I feel really gross when I slightly jiggle when I walk, much less because of a bunch of belly fat…ew. Besides, the average woman is supposed to gain only 25-35 pounds during their pregnancy. To me, if you can’t lose that much in the 3 months or so after your pregnancy that you shouldn’t have sex in, then I don’t know what to tell you. If your ass is already overweight and you have trouble losing weight you should only gain 10 pounds.

Personally, I plan on working out throughout any pregnancy I have so that I won’t gain too much extraneous weight. I can’t imagine being so big…

Any ladies who have already been preggers: what is that like?

5 08 2008
The Doc Is In

Zoso and Joy – I agree, I hate how hard it is for people in lower SES groups to live healthy lives. First there’s the issue of actual food prices due to the ridiculous way in which the gov’t subsidizes farmers mostly just for grains and meats (and the corn slop which is feed for the cattle and High Fructose Corn Syrup for us) whereas produce farmers get virtually nothing…keeping the price of fruits and veggies high and processed crap cheap. Then there are built environment issues…forget a Whole Foods, some neighborhoods don’t even have ANY grocery store, but they have a liquor store on every corner. And don’t even get me started on healthcare access, not having a freaking safe outdoor space for kids to play, or having no choice in your neighborhood becoming a site for industrial waste dumping.

Because of all these issues to overcome, this is why I REALLY get pissed off at all the lardass soccer moms who have access to top notch gyms and healthy food, but choose to roll their gas guzzlers to McDonald’s for dinner every other night.

5 08 2008
riz

Until a man has children and deals with post-birth weight loss issues, please do not come at me re: pre nup. And I’m talking about a man who was born a man.. not pics that have been floating around the internet of the trans-man who is now pregnant. I’ve never had kids, but I hear that it’s hard to lose the weight after having more than one.

Also, considering that women are always the focus on weight discussions, and that most many women are weight conscious (no matter what they actually weigh), it seems that men are more likely to gain that spare tire later in life. Men tend to have faster metabolism when they are young, perhaps because they play sports, perhaps it’s how they’re built, but they don’t gain that ass and thigh weight that women do. So they don’t really have to watch their weight. Then when they get older, that metabolism slows down, and they don’t know how to eat right because they have just been naturally thin. Woman, on the other hand, constantly work on their weight, so it’s not such a huge shocker that they can’t down chicken wings like its granola….

But I dunno. Maybe Chris’ Best Friend has some insight into it.

I agree with Obama. Only because I worry what some Black folks will do once the check is handed to them. I’m not sure how much money it would be, but Im a little too worried about people going out to spend their reparation check on rims, new clothes, cars and such. This is where I cannot stand the mentality of some Black folks, cause why shouldnt the goverment be able to cut us all a check. I’m sure many of us could use the money to pay off loans, invest or just save for a rainy day.

The reparations would do much better by going back into the community- really.

But I would laugh if they do decide to hand out reparations and all the people claiming that theyre not Black or mixed with this and that start coming in droves to get a piece of the pie.

In response to Riz’s link about Chris’ Best Friend:

“His attorneys say a drug he is taking for migraine headaches could affect the execution process. The drug Topamax, a type of seizure medication, may have created a resistance to thiopental, the drug used to put inmates to sleep before two other lethal drugs are administered, Dr. Mark Heath, a physician hired by the Ohio Public Defender’s Office, said in documents filed with the court.”

For some reason, the fact that this guy gets those migraine prescription drugs annoys me. I mean, there are law-abiding citizens who can’t afford prescriptions and go without but this overweight weasel is not only eating his way out of death, but probably has migraines in some part due to his fat existence. Another check in the dumb government box.

Wait wait…I’m wrong about the 3 months…I think. I know one of my friends waited three months…that might have been because she couldn’t stand her boyfriend and didn’t want to get pregnant again.

Fat Bastard needs to go ahead and die. Migraine meds? His lawyer put him on that ish. I’m sure that he’s experienced worse pains in prison…. I didn’t even think that migraines really existed, until I had my first one when studying for the Bar. But… still, not enough for meds. And even I realized that it was stress-induced, not physiological.

On the flip side, if too many patients become resistant, then it might make states recall the drugs that they use for the death penalty… because those are TERRIBLE and don’t work.

Some parents don’t see how dysfuctional they are and some just don’t give a damn even when they know they are.

Stop telling people healthy food is expensive! Organic food can be expensive. But if you hit the farmers markets you can stock up on fruits, vegetables, bread, cheese and such for very good prices. I generally spend no more than $50 at a farmers market. Yea, I know there aren’t farmers markets in the hood but if you have a car or if the nearest white neighborhood isn’t too far, hop on a bus. I always shop in the white neighborhoods for food, it’s better quality. Even better, if you have the $, shop for food in a Jewish neighborhood, that’s the best quality.

But it issssssss! LOL! Go to McDonald’s and look what’s on the $1 meal, then check out the price of a salad. For many of us the price difference is something we’re able to absorb, but it’s a huge difference for a lot of people. And consider those who mostly get their food from food banks (not just homeless but a lot of working poor)…unfortunately that donated stuff isn’t always the healthiest (foods full of sodium and preservatives to make them non-perishable).

I feel you on the local farmer’s markets though. I think a lot of us need to start reinvesting in community businesses and markets. A lot of the price markup in supermarkets is due to shipping, and as the cost of oil doesn’t look like it’s coming down anytime soon…

@Amadeo:

Yeah, dude’s book is geared toward a female audience. Like I said, he’s not wrong. I even had a couple of “Preach!” moments. But…. much like the CNN special, he didn’t break any new ground, and didn’t provide solutions.

I think it would be fabulous if you wrote to a male audience. You are exactly the type of person who needs to put it out there. Not only are you the Clit Commander, but you also seem to have a real insight into the emotional needs of women (I had an “Awwwwww” moment when you mentioned going to a natural hair show with your girl).

You’re right that target men would not read a book. Those who did read it would be like preaching to the choir. But what about a column in a popular men’s magazine? With the popularity of this blog, and your blog, too, I’m sure that you could get a break…. Give your articles a catchy title, put enough chauvinistic stuff in there so men feel that you’re on their team, then slide in some real gems about relationships and/or DATING (for the singles out there)! Just a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down…

I could serve as one of your single female consultants/ correspondents as needed. I would do the silly stuff, like go on blind dates and give you feedback about what guys do wrong… or rock different hairstyles or clothing types to see how men respond… or go out and meet guys and use different identities (like a waitress instead of a lawyer)… things like that!

Back to the reparations, I dont think the government should give any reparations to individuals, I agree with above posts and obama that we should be funding schools and programs. Or we can give every black person the reparations the old reparations, which was 40 acres and a mule. I would pay good money to see a black guy in Montana pulling up to his 40 acres with a mule in the middle lmao. Land prices would plummit in all the midwestern states because black people would be selling that land so fast your head would spin and also because the govt would give the shittiest parcels of land in the midwestern states away. Its not like they are going to give 40 acres of prime los angeles land to some guy lmao. As chris rock has said, if the govt gave reparations, Cadilac would be the number 1 car in the world. The govt gave reparations to the japanese in the 80s because of the internment camps int he 40s, but its different because the govt didnt make slave owning mandatory 140 plus years ago, like they did when they put all those japanese in the camps in the 40s, there just wasnt a law banning it. Give money to schools and call it reparations, have a few more schools named after martin luther king, and rosa parks and that would be fine. I dont deserve reparations, I never had to pick one peice of cotton or call any white person “massa”. The jews didnt get reparations for our govt turning a blind eye on most of the holocaust, even though they were many years, and 6 million jews late to stop it. Its insulting how some people say they “deserve” reparations, I would first demand proof and documentation that they are decended from a slave, and provide factual evidence that why after 120 plus years there family couldnt become successful in america.

Don’t be fooled by my earlier posts…if they send me a check in the mail…I will cash it and end up working for myself. They way I feel they can never make up for it…but I will take their money as an attempt. I know what to do with it.

Re: relationships…I keep thinking that the Hitch method might work…when dudes look up and wonder why the “nice guys” who women would spit on before are walking around with a woman they couldn’t get that might be the draw.

@ Amadeo: Are you talking “techniques” or are you talking “knowledge?” Those are different. Any “Hitch” can get a girl to have sex with him, but can he be a good man? The kind that women brag about or long to be with? The first step is to tap into why a man should even act right. As so many comments here have suggested– a Black man lives in P*ssy R Us. He has no motivation to be the Marrying Kind because he can act a damn fool and still find some woman to put up with him….But is it the type of woman that is worth his while? Maybe your first step is to create the need for a Good Black Woman. Then proceed from there.

(and btw, the Hitch guy probably has better chances than you think. I dated a Hitch guy for 5 years, because I saw the goodness inside of him).

@Miracle: My family is indeed graduated from slaves, and I am the first law school graduate in 120 years. Does that make us finally successful? Does that change the fact that I owe [redacted] in law school loans? Or change the fact that I initially had trouble interviewing at large firms because I didn’t go sailing or play tennis? Or make it easier to raise my perfect Cosby family that I will probably never have? Please, don’t get it twisted. One Black president and one big firm salary does not even the playing field for modern Black people.

Knowledge and techniques.

A nice guy who has some aloofness will get into the door quicker. You don’t have to be an ass…but hell it is like the movie. Teaching him how to let a woman get close enough to see him. Those dudes are quality but a quality most people don’t see on first glance.

Landon- With all due respect (I am holding up my thumb and pointer finger to indicate a smale amount), when people enter marriages with stupid shit like prenup clauses over weight gain, it speaks to….um…just being an unrealistic and pretenious, overinflated self worth having asshole.

No, it’s NOT wrong to expect that your woman maintains her health. But you aren’t talking about a clause that states that you can divorce her and not give her X amount of dollars because she gains too much weight. Think about what a disgusting FUCK you sound like saying that. Say she’s 5’6 and you say that if she hits 160 pounds, she’s outta there. What if she hangs at 159 pounds for 20 years? Will you consult one of your douchebag idiot collegues or fellow Whorehouse alums about what to do?

What if she gains the weight but you STILL LOVE HER? Will you leave automatically? What if YOU gain weight? Does it go both ways? Or, what if you lose your job and no longer earn a good salary? Surely, the sort of trophy idiot bitch who would sign such a prenup is expecting you to make a cerain amount of money to be coming in from you. Is she fair to leave if you go broke?

And what sort of message would you be sending your kids, especially your daughters, if you leave their mother and had a pre-nup like this?

You don’t keep a wife from getting fat by looming a divorce over her head. You do it by affirming her beauty, encouraging her to stay fit, making healthy choices for YOURSELF and working as a team to create a healthy and active culture for your family. And you start by mating with a woman who shares your committment to healthy living!

As for the article:

“I have said in the past — and I’ll repeat again — that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed,” the Illinois Democrat said recently.

“If we have a program, for example, of universal health care, that will disproportionately affect people of color, because they’re disproportionately uninsured,” Obama said. “If we’ve got an agenda that says every child in America should get — should be able to go to college, regardless of income, that will disproportionately affect people of color, because it’s oftentimes our children who can’t afford to go to college.”

This is the best we can hope for when it comes to reparations, anyway.

I agree with Obama’s stance because if he was to even hint agreeing with to some aspects of reparations, then it will serve as fodder in fueling those critics for painting him only as the “black candidate” and therefore cannot be trusted to be elected to the presidency. Besides, there would be no way that the U.S. government would actually ensure that the spreading out of monies to blacks would really be fair (i.e. stipulations mentioned earlier about proving bloodline and how many hours worked, uh that’s fucking insulting right there) because the government will find a way to not do the right thing. In addition, money that can be used for “reparations” needs to be redirected to other avenues that will actually help black people ranging from health care to educational incentives and measures to attend college and trade schools to money management. By focusing on the problems that affect every single black neighborhood in the country will real solutions will began.
Health care-health coverage and regular routine checkups/prevention with emphasis on pre-screening for common afflictions in the black community (i.e. cardiovascular disease, diabetes) and choices/options/avenues for prevention/keeping in check those diseases
Education: get rid of all this craptacular focus on testing, testing, testing and more testing (i.e. No Child Left Behind Act). How in the hell do you expect students now to know anything when all the schools focus is on just teaching on how to take a test. I was exposed to that while growing up but it had not become ridiculous as it has now. Knowing the correct way to look up context clues in a narrowly defined passage will not help in college when you have to take real subject areas such as chemistry, biology, calculus, and classes in their majors. That’s why there is such a high rate of students having to take remedial classes because they did not get a real education while in middle and high school
Money management-biggest issue of the continuing cycle of poverty, not saving, in adequate preparation for retirement because of our lack of knowledge in how to correctly start saving money from the get-go (i.e. as a kid). Programs that teach money matters while kids are in school goes a long way in understanding that it is all about saving money ( I had programs like this while I was in middle school) and making money work for you, instead of spending on frivolous items (i.e. rims, clothing, cars).
What I have listed above is only a sample of ways to start addressing major problems in the black community that take much needed urgency then worrying about reparations. Instead of this back and forward as mentioned in the article posted about reparations, actually getting into getting the hands dirty and changing the mindset that we have is a start.

my home girl thinks that reparations is a bunch a bs that will hurt us more than help us

Do you feel obligated to help your less fortunate family members if you are well off financially? What if you have a cousin who stays broke and is always “borrowing” money or an aunt who just can’t seem to get it together. Is it okay to say no even if you have the means? What are your boundaries about money when it comes to family?”

When I was a child I thought it was a showing of solidarity and support for the family, but the older I got and I saw some of the shadiness of relatives when they used to ask my uncle and grandmother for money, really would piss me off. My uncle and grandmother were retired, in ill-health, raising me and I would see relatives come from nowhere asking to borrow money from them for whatever reasons, only to see them come back the very next month with their hand out asking for help. Especially when the relatives that would ask for money would always stay in some kind of drama, and the best part is when my uncle died a few years back, and how amazing those same relatives that would always come around being annoying just disappeared ( I guess the money well was gone and they already knew by looking at me they wouldn’t even get a dime out of me). In general my relatives really don’t bother me because they know I will give them one of my “looks” of I know you are full of shit so don’t even bother opening your mouth to me to ask me for money.

@Riz
Thats not what i ment when i said successful, I mean when your life is better then that of your ancestors. When you move up a social class. Slaves sadly were at the bottom in the class system, but over 120 years, most of their decendents are not at the bottom of the class system. I just read a study that said at least 50% of African Americans are middle class, just middle class, not upper middle class, not lower middle class, not upper class, not poor, exactly in the middle, like most of america. Saying that, I would say that when you account for the lower middle class (which is still a couple classes up from the post-slavery class), the middle class, the upper middle class, and the upper class, a large majority of African Americans have pulled themselves up because of the American system, and are not owed reparations. Those people probably would rather have it go to schools to benefit everybody and not just them. The people who seem to demand reparations are the ones who never pulled themselves up, and would never share what they were given. I think our nation being liberal minded enough to have a black president, and people not being able to “blame the white man” when the man in charge is black, says alot about the black community moving away from using slavery as a means for financial gain. Im sure that even though you were the first person in your family to graduate from a law school (although i dont know if your the first person to graduate college in your family) you probably grew up in a middle class household, and even though you might have loans to payback, you will likely never be poor or lower middle class, or even middle class. Your degree and education can never be taken from you, your likely to move up a class, which proves my point that your family who started as slaves, throughout a short period of time were able to climb to status ladder, which in any other country would likely be impossible. Because of your achievements your children will probably have a higher expectation of themselves and would probably not even consider a state school for their post high school education, they would most likely only go to a private university. You nor your children should receive reparations because just for that fact that you are successful (maybe not financially at the moment, but mentally) and you can care for youself and your family proves that the america system works, and coming from nothing a family can grow. If you lived in Albania, the Congo, or any other country in the world whose citizens were not able to succeed and move up the ladder based on nothing but financial means, then sure get reparations, because you probably wont survive without it, would you get it there? hell no, but being in America where you can succeed just by a quality education, and sometimes even less, says wonders.

Muse – in California, you can do that.

5 08 2008

@Miracle – “large majority of African Americans have pulled themselves up because of the American system…” – African Americans have pulled themselves up despite the American system not because of it and not to mention that we helped build this country(not necessarily by choice), and success is attainable here because this country as a whole is very wealthy. That wealth was initially based on two things free land (stolen) and free labor (slavery).

“…black community moving away from using slavery as a means for financial gain.” – What financial gain have black people got from slavery???

@Zahara – “Welfare = reparations” – Sorry, that’s a lie… welfare had nothing to do with reparations; there were always poor people in this country it wasn’t until the Depression and some previously upper class people went broke that people starting feeling sorry for others, aristocracy anyone… Welfare isn’t and has never been a black thing, nor would reparations in any form be a constant never-ending stream of income like welfare.

Marriage contract dude is a very generous fellow. He gives her 14 good behavior days credit for each time she gives him unexpected anal intercourse.
