I’ve had a million things to do over the weekend and was never able to get around to writing. New post coming tomorrow.
In the meantime, what does everyone think about this?

“I fear that reparations would be an excuse for some to say, ‘We’ve paid our debt,’ and to avoid the much harder work.”
I can feel that statement. Without reparations people are already on some, “slavery was a long time ago, get over it.”
Mind you I’d cash a check quick as a motherfucker…but frankly the way this Government spends money, we’d get a check and it would only be able to fill up our tanks a couple times. I’d rather have money go into schools and programs to empower folks. My job is to help people with employment, education and training. I find that the people who rely on me don’t really get far, but the people who learn and take the information and understand the processes are the ones that don’t have to come back again.
that reparations skit on season 1 of chappelle’s show forever changed my view on the subject….okay maybe not but it sho was funny
“i just bought this baby cash money!!”
I Co-sign Amedeo,
I also agree that having complete educational equality regardless of tax base would improve all childrens chances of success in the inner city/ and or rural areas
I have to Agree with Senator Obama, its not the answer. We need a fundamental overhaul of or social services and education services in urban america. no amount of money short of 1 million dollars per descendent of slaves would be satisfactory. Sadly many of us would waste that money on nothingness and ignorance. like Dave Chapelle show we would save Cadilac from going under. I wonder what would really happen if every descendent of slaves received a million dollars. Some clever white folks would figure a way to make a lot of money off of us. Personally I would feel a good number of us ahem us on this site would use it for good…
Um…Obama’s right. Why give folks a lump sum and their schools suck, or they can’t afford insurance. Reparations would encourage laziness. It’s just another handout.
Besides, I read somewhere, that the gov’t would need at least a hundred trillion dollars based on an estimated 200 million hours of slave labor to pay out to descendants (those who can prove it). And that’s with interest!
I agree. Monetary reparations are not the answer to the ills in the black community. Invest it in our communities, our schools, and in things that will take us farther than a check ever could.
we can’t get reparations; there are just too stipulations… like would you getmore money based on the longevity of your family being involved in the slave trade? based on you ecomonic status now, do you get less money? should we give money to a bunch of black people who we KNOW willspend money on spinners, but won’t pay college loans (you know who they are)?
i think about the skit on chappelle’s show…. when all the black people go their reparations…. “these people ar just rushing to get this money back to us”
i think we all deserve reparations…. but we also deserved 40 acres and a mule… you see how that turned out.
C’mon folks, we ALL know what some of “us” would do with a reparations check. There would be an exponential spike in the sales of rims, Jordans, and hairweaves LOL. But seriously NO amount of money (or apology) can the repair the psychological effects of slavery. No matter how big the check, we would still be black in a country that pretends it isn’t racist because it’s PC. I for one agree with Obama, we need more than a one time check, we need something that will be an investment for the long term (ie public school funding, better training and jobs).
How about tax breaks…but I bet the gov could never handle that.
I agree with you. The government would find a way to exclude the majority of the descendants of slaves. They’d probably make some type of stipulation where you’d have to have a full African bloodline which stretches back to the slave trade. In this day and age, who can honestly say that they aren’t mixed with something?
I’m ok with it. If they were going to do reperations they should have done it when they were supposed to . In the year 2008 folk will blow that money ( to buy Blow, Hoes, and Shoes). It woudl do us no good to receive a huge ass check in the mail . Just look at what folk have done with there Stimulus Check ??? ( I put mines in a high interest savings ING account). Not saved it at all. Free money for doing nothing. If they do chose to do reperations then it should go to the inner city schools, black colleges, scholarships funds for Black children, and recreation centers in all black communities. You cant even give you cousin 100.00 and think he going to do right with it. So why give 1 million plus people 40,00 ( or waht ever) and think they going to do right with it.
Invest it in the inner city communities with high populations of minorities. Think Detroit, The Bronx (yes, PR had slavery, just like the rest of the Caribbean), Baltimore, DC, Compton, South Central, Birmingham, Atlanta, Queens…
Not only do we need it for the schools, we need it for neighborhood clean up. The government should flip some of those old buildings that collect crack heads and prostitution rings to change into rehabilitation centers, community recs with after school programs, etc…
Ok. Assuming all 37M of us are descendants of slaves (no), and that we all get an equal cut (another no), then each of us would receive somewhere around $2M.
How would bi-racial/multi-racial folks claim their cut? What about folks who were “passing” most of their lives? What about Liberians? There would be panic in the streets…
“They’d probably make some type of stipulation where you’d have to have a full African bloodline which stretches back to the slave trade.”
i read an article a couple of years ago about this. it was basically saying exactly that- that you should have to prove you were a direct descendent of a slave and even estimate the number of hours said descendent worked, etc. etc.
What pisses me off is that there are idiots in the black community who are hell bent on assuming that just because Obama is black that he’s only going to focus on black issues, instead of the entire country’s issues. That’s why he’s getting so much heat from people like Jesse Jackson, who think that black rules all. Mind you, there are more latinos then blacks in the U.S…
The government would most likely restrict it to those that descended from the slaves of the North American Slave trade. That means my share would be cut to below $1 Million…
The deeper root to all of this…neither way will change ideas and that’s the real thing. If ideas changed alot of this would be a moot point. I think giving out money would foster more anger among whites…affirmative action already does even though middle class white women have gotten the most from it.
Of course it would. That’s why they’re trying to do away with Afirmative Action.
I’ll go ahead and co-sign with most of the posts above. Ever since I heard that reparations were even a possibility I’ve been against them. Provisions for closing the gap between the poorest of the poor and the richest of the rich (or even the gap between the poorest of the poor and the lower middle class) can only yield good in the world.
I want to punch Vernellia Randall in the ovaries. How is she gonna say my man can’t get elected with this POV? I want to vote for him twice based on this story alone.
I would never trust anyone named ‘Vernellia’! Eww.
Frankly if he says he’s for reparations he’ll never get elected. He be better off throwing gang signs.
I have to cosign with Prof. Randall. Sweeping help across the board is not going to level the playing field for Black Americans, and the fact that Barack Obama can’t publicly admit that without ruining his chances at the presidency just means that the U.S. isn’t truly ready for a Black president.
People act like reparations is such a dirty word. Reparations don’t have to be a big ass check in the mail. Focus on improving BLACK schools, better educating BLACK children and giving us free or heavily discounted higher education. That sounds like a great plan for reparations to me.
Affirmative Action is a form of reparations. It was conceived as a direct response to slavery and its repercussions, that much is clear from LBJ’s early discussion of the subject. Just because everybody and their mama have hopped on the AA bandwagon, doesn’t mean that it and programs like it aren’t reparations.
Also, reparations, if they come to exist, need to go to BLACK AMERICANS. I don’t want it going the way of AA. Reparations are owed by this country to Black Americans. Not Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Jamaicans and etc. Yes, they had slavery, too, but it wasn’t American slavery, so an attempt at correcting that wrong isn’t the point. And, it shouldn’t matter “how Black” they are, as long as they have been living as a Black American. Otherwise, the Creoles would riot.
It would be a strippers DREAM!!!!!
making it rain would be an understatement!
instead of money straight up… I would prefer all projects become condos and they own it while paying a a mortgage on their units (same as their previous rent) so they own a piece of the american pie and get tax benefits. the money goes to renovate the projects and to be injected directly into all near by schools.
Day care centers put into all projects and urban dwellings so our children can have decent upbringing and learn a little more at a younger age… the million of dollars per person (tax free). 2 teachers per class room….
ON a Side note what do you think about mandatory AIDS testing for all Americans?
Ok, its been nice, but I’m out.
mandatory AIDS testing = violation of privacy rights
I haven’t read these comments yet, or Obama’s comment – but I think Chappelle, the comic genius that he is, hit the nail on the head. If you give these people (yeah…I SAID IT!!!) a check, they are not going to do anything productive with it. I’d much rather see reparations in the form of higher salaries for inner city teachers, parenting classes for people like the parents of Terrance Jr. (see the Facebook page pics – I reference Terrance Jr. almost daily), and serious mentoring programs – things of that nature. And I think that we (seriously – people on this blog) should get to decide who allocates the money. I think we discussed this once before – but I nominate Cornel West. Who else would you nominate to manage the Black People Get It Together Fund? I also think that Bob Johnson should pledge half of his net worth to the fund. That nig nog owes us!
how much money do you think we will get… sadly they did give money to Japanese americans received money after WWII because they were put into concentration camps and their houses and business were stripped from them.
however in that case a a legit monetary value could be assigned to their losses.
How do you calculate what we were worth. Does america have that much money?
Reparations checks – NO! Nike, Cadillac, and Hennessy all ready have too much money for my cousins to go pumping more into them.
However, I’ve always felt that the best way to offer reparations would be to grant tuition waivers for students attending in-state colleges and universities. In addition to education in the obvious form, it’s often the lack of that little piece of paper which counts so many blacks out before they can even be considered for higher paying jobs and careers.
If Ming Ling and ‘nem can get reparations for being put in concentration camps for less than a decade, then we deserve some type of payback for the time our ancestors were enslaved.
I don’t think focusing on Black communities alone is going to change the plight of the most disadvantaged. Amadeo is right: black Americans’ status in our society won’t change until the mind’s of non-Black Americans are changed.
Frankly, I imagine that if the government focuses on *all* disadvantaged peoples, we will gain more b/c the YTs in gov’t will know they’re giving benefit to their own, not just the the more negligible “other”. We’ll end up riding the coattails of the poorest whites, but I like to think that the liberation of one ultimately can mean the liberation of all.
How do you calculate what we were worth.
I think your pay out should be based on how salty you are. I heard that the salty negoes were the strongest.
Affirmative Action wasn’t seen as a form of reparations but a way to deal with current the discrimination, since you can’t as easily ensure fair hiring as you can fair voting.
No president much less the first black president would sign a reparations bill. They would instantly impeach his ass some people are still mad that some Native Americans got casinos.
I figure they would easily twist it around and find a way to give it to white women just like affirmative action. Probably citing the (nonexistent) number of white women who were raped by black men in a Lebron Vogue cover like fashion…
Co-sign that reparations cannot come in the form of a big ass check, but rather investments in the communities that are most deeply affected by the legacy of slavery. Oh yeah, and descendents of slaves should never pay taxes agian… ever (not that it would help me out, but I think its only fair).
Actually, ‘mandatory’ HIV testing is the wrong term– its supposed to be part of a routine physical exam. Given the fact that HIV infection rates continue to grow in young black females, middle aged ‘divorcees’ (cougars), nursing home residents, and the elderly it makes sense
How about breaks for small black businesses? Credits for things like tutors and classes to help kids get ahead and prepare them for AP classes. Upgrades to public school facilities. Health Care…not free clinics either. Credits for car insurance (those living in the city are paying for accidents had here by people coming from the counties). Reflect it in peoples Pell grants. Put money towards recreation centers and childrens rec leagues. Make money available for training programs…like Maryland has the Individual training account – about 4K for trainings (of in demand jobs) available to people in MD under a certain income level. How about improvements for public defenders offices…so they won’t just be there to work out a deal to get you less time and leave you with a record regardless.
@ Landon – Hell no. America doesn’t have that much money, and it never will. How about this: the U.S. pays for improvements on education and recruitment systems for the next 500 years? That should put us about as close to fair and square as we can reasonably get.
Also, I would want these educational contributions to be controlled by private citizens–not by the government. In other words, individual citizens should be given grants through which they are able to run schools in Black communities WITHOUT government intervention. Essentially, publicly-funded private schools. Charter schools, less the bullshit, success-impeding, government intervention.
@ Jo – I’m not saying that there should be no programs in place to help other poor Americans, but programs to help Black Americans need to be tailored to help Black Americans. What’s good for the goose is not good for the gander, here. For proof of this, please see the history of Affirmative Action in this country.
How does mandatory AIDS Testing violate private rights…
You have to be tested TB and over diseases, why not AIDS.
If we are going to defeat AIDS we need to know how bad the epidemic truly is. We have not idea how many people have AIDS because half of the people infected don’t know they have it.
As a black woman I would expect you to be the most concerned about that situation. it would not be public record but everyone should know their status.
In NYC they have this thing called the SAFE SEX CARD. it has a membership number and a phone number on the back (24/7 operator). If you meet some one you like, and they give you the card there is a number on the back to check their STD status and when they were last tested… its purely volunteer.
That is a very very slippery slope. Mandatory AIDS tests, then Mandatory STD tests, then Mandatory tests for Mono, diabetes, etc. Next you end up testing black babies for down syndrome, sickle cell, etc… The testing is not inherently bad. Its what that information is used for. Test those black babies…then kill them off.
If you think that is a ridiculous argument…go pick up an American History book.
Plus, you cannot force one to get ANY medical treatment they dont want unless the disease is highly communicable…like TB.
@ Landon – I know of no mandatory medical testing for adults in this country, but I could be wrong–I’ve never specifically looked into it. If something is mandatory, then that means it must be monitored by the government. That is where the right to privacy stuff kicks in.
That Safe Sex Card thing does sound like a good idea, but don’t you think folks can get around it? Maybe by giving out someone else’s card number, or just not opting to use it altogether?
I would appoint Chris Gardner to the ‘Black People Get Together Fund’ …
“I want to vote for him twice based on this story alone.”
the more i learn about his views on matters such as these, the more i love obama.
“I think your pay out should be based on how salty you are. I heard that the salty negoes were the strongest.”
^^^i choked on my cereal when i read this.
RE: Manadatory testing…it was mentioned here before that the % of blacks with AIDS is high because more inner city blacks go to clinics while more whites go to a private doctor. So frankly for the people who do go…your information is out there.
Because of my work when I see certain forms I know it’s going to be reported. When was the last time your doctor asked your level of education?
TB is a disease that is airborne and can wipe people out very easily. While it is arguable AIDS is a very dangerous disease…you cannot get it from breathing the air.
The issue is that AIDS is being posed as a straight BLACK disease. These people will run with that….and not in a good way.
Scroll down it says..”Is AIDS a BLACK Disease?” Which is code for…lets stop the Goddamned funding!!!!!!!
No medical test is mandatory. A patient can refuse or accept anything they chose, from temperature reading to TB pricking.
I do feel that HIV/AIDS testing should be part of the marriage blood-testing procedure. Shit some states (Maryland) don’t even test blood prior to marriage, hence all these first cousins running around joined in holy matrimony.
Where did you get that info from?
Just because Obama is black doesn’t mean that America is ready to have this conversation. Cause America isn’t. And the more Obama focuses on race the more he’ll jeopardizes his chances of creating a legacy. I feel for the brother. Can’t be easy trying to make everyone happy.
Yeah, even though Prof Randall makes a good point in that since he can’t be for reparations it means we’re not really ready for a Black president, I’m down with Obama’s decision.
Giving us a big fat check? So we can give it right BACK to the 2520s when we spend it and give them a reason to be all, “Okay, we paid our debt, now everything’s okeely dokeely…so don’t ever mention slavery again.”? Please. We need to start from the root of the problem which is why giving to the schools/community is a better route.
Marriage Blood Test Chart
@Jo: The only reason why things wont/dont get better for blacks is because blacks are so dependent upon YTs. We need them to hire us, to sign our checks, to approve our apt lease, and everything else under the sun. If we had more visible black business, something which takes funds/education, this wouldn’t be such a problem.
…also…TB testing is not mandatory..
there is not one immunization that is mandatory either. Its mandatory to get into public schooling….but if you homeschool your children and do not believe in immunization for religious reasons…you certainly do not have to
When ppl say ‘give to the schools/communities/etc’, what does that mean? Can someone elaborate on how exactly this is executed to be beneficial.
Don’t forget that we as a ppl don’t stick together. We tear each other down to get ahead.
To a certain extent if some of our mentalities don’t change money will do nothing this is evident from the aftermath of desegregation which even though it was a positive killed a lot of black businesses. Unless we are talking about black owned factories or money that will turn us into producers instead of consumers then it is worthless.
As far as AIDS testing it sounds good but I frankly don’t trust our government these people attempted to sterilize black women here and sponsored the sterilization of poor women in Puerto Rico and nothing has happened to make me think they are anymore moral today then they were then.
Another Marriage thing
An HIV/AIDS test is offered, not mandatory, only Syphillis and the like are. I think if they test blood in certain states anyway, they should test for HIV/AIDS and be done with it. New immigrants are tested. If you travel to certain countries, you’re tested. It’s not a violation of privacy in certain situations.
That’s easy. Take the money meant for reparations and give it to the school districts, so that the district can spend more $$ per student and increase the amount of extracurriculars and improve the curriculum.
@B4Prez: I get what you’re saying and I agree with it. But black businesses can’t start without money. And it’s hard to get money as a black person if the 2520 who approves loans at the corner bank is sitting across the table from you and only seeing a large red number.
Where are the black run banks? I suppose we’d have more of them if we had the money to invest in them. Where are the black creditors? I suppose we’d see more of them if they could get hired easily. I understand that we need to build our own infrastructure and I’d support that. That’s what the Black Pages are for. I’m just saying that it’s hard to build that infrastructure, when someone else is selling the pipes.
I agree with Obama. I don’t think Black Americans should be given a check. Instead, the government should invest money in improving our schools and getting more jobs (or more skills) to Black Americans.
With that said, I bet if they did decide to give out checks, all these people claiming other races (“I’m only 1/8 black since I’m mixed with Chinese, Italian, Irish and Indian”), will quickly jump back to their black side….
@B4Prez – I think no-strings-attached grants should be given to people who want to found schools for Black children. Obviously, all the money would have to be put into the school, but I don’t think there should be an excess of limits on where the money goes within the school or what or how the school must teach or how it hires.
@brran1 – I disagree with this idea that Black people don’t stick together in this country. I think we support one another more than any other group in this country with the possible exception of Jews. Black people are unabashedly for Black people in a way that I’ve observed among no other subculture in America.
As far as how to give it out…look at the populaiton of blacks at a school or whatever or x% =$
You’re right, but I feel that a big part of that whole ‘crabs in a barrel’ mentality is becuase so many have nothing. Blacks always get a bad rap for ‘not supporting/hating on’ each other, but it’s because we’re the group who got completely shtted on by this country.
If u take a group of 10 homeless ppl, and give two of them food, do u really think the other 8 are going to hang around and watch the 2 eat and enjoy their food?
If the face of Black America changed to one where ppl were prosperous (see: taking advantage of opportunities) then I truly think a lot of that ‘hate’ would be void.
i think it was an interesting article… however, what about this one: http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/wayoflife/08/04/segregated.sundays/index.html?eref=rss_topstories
I’ve been gone for a minute now.. sup e-fam 🙂
as far as reparations go…smh knowing our government they will send us the check and then next tax period take the shit right back.
look i am one for privacy rights and you are right JEN its how the information is used and who has access to the information. However I am talking about all americans. We will also find out that the number of STDs among all AMERICANS is much higher then previously thought. The reason why the black number seems so high is because there results are reported by clinics were as white or more affluent people go to private doctors and they are not reported.
The information should only be provided to the person. And the results should be reported by as a general number to determine the true spread of the epidemic. thousands if not millions of lives would be saved and it would help stop the spread….
PRIVACY hahah…. our emails are tagged, if you say certain things on the phone its recorded…. what privacy!
Landon, I think your idea is good in theory, but that it would not translate well into reality.
@Jen: Really now? So then why was Jesse Jackson hatin on Obama? Why are there some people out there that do more in trying to hold you back, versus trying to help you succeed. Granted, people of any race can be a hater, but I think what I mentioned before is the case in most circumstances.
BTW: Japanese internment victims got about 50K
If you want to receive food stamps, welfare checks, government grants, tax breaks, public school, state colleges, military service it should be required…
If you take an Aids test you should receive a tax break every year!
hell lets go a little further. if you stay in shape and eat healthy and you stay under or over certain weights you should receive tax breaks. The amount of money saved (from healthcare) if AMERICANS just got their FAT asses up and worked out and eat healthier would bring AMERICA a long way!
I asked that question because I wanted to see if everyone really thought that more money in a school is going to bring about the most change. I personally don’t think that’s the case. I think, generally speaking, the kids who are going to learn, are going to learn. True, many school need more books and supplies, but the kids have to know how to read those books in order to benefit.
For example, one of the biggest things an inner-city school could do with a chunk of money is to put day cares in schools. I know many ppl are going to think that’s crazy, but my point is that if you don’t tackle the reasons why kids aren’t getting to school and learning, a bunch of new supplies carries no weight.
Jen – but Blacks are usually for Blacks in word, not in deed. We’re all talk most of the time.
Reparations are meant to repair damage. So first American would have to figure out what damage has been caused because of Slavery and Jim Crow.
Once that is done then what would repair. Money won’t necessarily repair the damage that slavery and Jim Crow has done.
Also their is, as most of you know, a precedent for reparations to be paid. Native Americans have received reparations (land, gambling rights); Japanese Americans also received reparations for their internment.
So why not us?
I think that Affirmative Action WAS a great way to pay reparations. Unfortunately it has been corrupted so that White women benefit more than African Americans. Also other minority groups have been allowed to benefit from it.
But after only a few decades White people are tired of the playing field being leveled. So as we speak several states are trying to repeal Affirmative Action. We, African Americans, should be fighting for Affirmative Action, especially in education. But sadly we aren’t.
So why even debate reparations if we aren’t willing to fight for the reparations that were already available to us?
Couldn’t agree with you more, but at the same time, you have people now that have opportunities available to them, and what do they do? Continue to be lazy and collect that welfare check on the 1st (or the 1st & 15th) of the month.
You have some folks in this world that are destined to be the movers and shakers, and you have other folks that are destined to be nothing more than lazy bums.
WHAT UP MRS EPPS!!!
Should be – So first ‘America’ would have to figure out what damage has been caused because of Slavery and Jim Crow.
Landon – why would taking a medical test – HIV/AIDS test qualifies – warrant tax exemption? Can annual Pelvic exams/Pap-smears earn breaks, too? What about Prostate exams? I don’t get it.
I agree that if folks were physically healthier, we’d have fewer financial burdens, but still.
Oh Crap. Hey Mrs. Epps!
We’re all talk because most of us can’t do much else for one another. But, where we can, we do.
In middle class Black households, service is a freaking requirement. Even our sororities and fraternities are geared toward service. Black professional and student organizations exist to support Black people and existed, in most cases, long before other minority support orgs. Let’s not forget the Black Church. When I look around at my peers, Black people are absolutely more active in our communities than other races are, and if you looked around, I’m sure you’d notice the same.
Also their is, as most of you know, a precedent for reparations to be paid. Native Americans have received reparations (land, gambling rights)
You mean Reservations? Have you seen those living conditions? If that’s the government’s idea of reparations, no thanks. I’ll pass. They need a do-over.
hey hey hey Brran and Knat!!
Knat-Jen – but Blacks are usually for Blacks in word, not in deed. We’re all talk most of the time.
hahahaha yep i witnessed that shit lastnight at a cookout….
“I think, generally speaking, the kids who are going to learn, are going to learn.”
“Couldn’t agree with you more, but at the same time, you have people now that have opportunities available to them, and what do they do? Continue to be lazy and collect that welfare check on the 1st (or the 1st & 15th) of the month.”
These statements are both incredibly out of touch.
Are you flame?
email privacy is one thing. Having a doctor poke with you a needle is quite another. I was referrring to medical privacy. You have the right to die and procreate…these are fundamental rights…as is the right to refuse medical treatment. Do you REALLY want the government telling you when and what to do with your body?
If it would work the way you propose, I would be all for it. However, it will not. Nothing in this country ever has. People use that information for thier own political agendas. This, my friend, is the American way. That is the only reason why that would not work, much less even be seriously proposed.
I honestly can’t believe that you guys are saying that Black people don’t support one another. When I think back on the people and organizations who gave me cultural opportunities as a kid, my first job/internship, money and computers for college, support when I was pregnant, broke and alone–ALL BLACK.
Landon-hell lets go a little further. if you stay in shape and eat healthy and you stay under or over certain weights you should receive tax breaks. The amount of money saved (from healthcare) if AMERICANS just got their FAT asses up and worked out and eat healthier would bring AMERICA a long way!
i can dig it…
so many comment. very little attention span. so i’ll just say what i think. i personally don’t need them handing me money for suffering that i did not endure. we could use that money for school funding, and better health care.
I would agree, but then who is the government to determine who is morbidly obese and for what reasons. I dont not believe it is right to assume all fat people are lazy and are just fat cause they ate themselves that way. Thyroid problems can blow you the hell up…should those people be punished? If you are predisposed to being larger…should you be punished? I just dont believe in slippery slopes.
I just wanted to stop in an co-sign with some of the above in saying that I agree with Obama, and reparations need to be in the form of education, or tax breaks, or just something more…useful.
But I did want to ask, when if not now, will America be ready for a Black Pres?
How is my comment out of touch? I’m not sure where you’re from, but in Baltimore (where I’m from), take a trip to the projects or any low income neighborhood and I can guarantee that you’d see at least 3 Cadillac Escalades and 4 Chrysler 300’s. My thing is, if you can afford that, then why the hell are you living in low income housing?
Out of touch? In your world, maybe. Im the real world, definitely not.
Jen-I honestly can’t believe that you guys are saying that Black people don’t support one another. When I think back on the people and organizations who gave me cultural opportunities as a kid, my first job/internship, money and computers for college, support when I was pregnant, broke and alone–ALL BLACK.
Jen i dont think ppl are saying that black ppl dont support other black ppl becuase it does happen…but not in every community is like yours.
I believe some blacks support each other. But then again, this is the same forum that ragged on some of those support groups. Though not perfect, some of them do just what they are supposed to.
i.e. frats/sororities, Jack&Jill, Mocha Moms (my favorite), National Association of Black Journalists, NAACP etc.. We as blacks find flaws in those groups and then rip them to shreds.
then you were one of the lucky ones@ Jen. as a whole we lack support. instead of being together to get through our hard times, we break each other down just to get our way to the top.
@ Esquire – I don’t believe such a program would be effective, either. So many Black Americans are “overweight” because of lazy ass BMI calculations that ignore the greater muscle mass among Blacks relative to whites and other general differences in body makeup.
When I hear shit about government support based on health screening and care, all I can think of is WIC and how WACK that fucking program is. I mean, I am a grown woman with six years of undergraduate and graduate education and I have to sit there and miss class to listen to some bored woman tell me it is better to give my child an apple than cake in order to get some coupons for some formula.
I know the government is trying to help, but, uh…
@ Jen – U say this statement was out of touch, can I ask why?
Also, I find it funny that you speak of social orgs. supporting other blacks, but we’re talking about the masses of Black America. For them, sororities are something they’ve seen on College Hill, and for many of the frats/sororities, the masses are those ppl on Black in America. Until that bridge is there, the notion of blacks not supporting each other will never change.
@MrsEpps – Long time no see…u been drankin? lol
We rip black support groups apart in jest…
Who says who is fat and who isn’t according to Body Mass Index Serena Williams is overweight so that is obviously going to be slated towards white people…
She is Qui, I really suggest you expand your horizons. I am not a part of a lucky, privileged few. Black churches, NAACP, Urban League, AKA, DST, NABA, NBA/NBLSA and individual Black people have done more for me than I could have ever expected anybody to, and they do the same for millions of people every freaking year.
@Jen – I think they are saying that black people don’t support other black people enough not that we don’t do it at all. The amount of money that alumni give back to black schools is shameful and almost as bad as black schools not being in the top choices of many exceptional black students. When Irish people get into Notre Dame they more than likely go because it is tradition, less about going to the “best” school and more about making their schools the best.
Maybe I am missing something, but what is so wrong with adding and HIV/AIDS test to your routine check up?
you’re right those should be included also. Prostate exams especially because of mens / black mens phobia or rectum exams should be included. A better assessment of our health crises will allow us to solve the problem. We can’t solve a puzzle unless we have at least MOST of if NOT ALL THE PIECES!
Reparations if given should be placed in special accounts were people are given a card. The money is managed by financial advisors and put in low risk funds, CD, Bonds and high interest accounts. Only a certain amount of money can withdrawn every month for misc reasons. Big expenditures for weddings, health services and other reasonable things have to be submitted for approval. No more then one car can be bought every 4 years with the funds. Real Estate and business ventures (with a fully executed business plan) does not need to be approved! that is better then the money just being given out.
To receive reparations you must take all health screening test (regardless of results), exercise, be current on all child support, pass drug test sans Marijuana, denounce bob johnson, take a financial management course and PASS the final test any other rules will be discussed and passed by the board (thats yall)
The financial services(in control of Reparations) would be controlled by SBPH Financial services… Chris is CEO and I am CFO as discussed on previous discussions. Esquire is our paid legal council, and we will be accepting resumes for other positions.
hmmm….I would consider being of counsel just because of this portion…
“denounce bob johnson,”
You really knew how to ring me in there
Reparations are not the way to resolve he social ills against Black people. AS many posters stated before, it would give the rest of society a reason to tell Blacks to get over slavery. What the government should spend money on is revamping the educational system and making sure all individuals regardless of socio-economics has access to the best educational resources out there. Education is the way for individuals to move up economically. It is the essential foundation needed to do well in this society. When children aren’t given the basics they already fall behind.
Direct quote from brran1 – “Don’t forget that we as a ppl don’t stick together. We tear each other down to get ahead.”
WTF? I hate to hear this shit. THIS, ironically, is the crabs-in-a-barrel mentality. Whenever Black people try to discuss how to make improvements in our communities, some blot upon us decides to jump up and scream, “BEFORE WE MAKE PROGRESS, LET’S NOT FORGET THAT TINY MINORITY OF PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST PLAIN LAZY AND CAN’T BE HELPED. AND DON’T FORGET TO COMPLETELY DISREGARD THE LEGIONS OF ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS THAT SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY CONTINUALLY.”
No discussion about the Black community seems to be complete until this out-of-touch and woefully pessimistic brother or sister gets up and makes himself known.
“Also their is, as most of you know, a precedent for reparations to be paid. Native Americans have received reparations (land, gambling rights)”
HIV/AIDs test should be manditory for everyone just like TB. This disease is killing way too many individuals of color and people are not being responsible by disclosing their status to their sexual partners.
“Maybe I am missing something, but what is so wrong with adding and HIV/AIDS test to your routine check up?”
In response, absolutely nothing! This should be encouraged..even stressed. The only problem is when the gov’t starts mandating things you have to do with your body, children, religious beliefs…they tend to go apeshit and out of control. Thats why the refusal to accept medical treatment is a fundamental right.
Seriously..the govt will wreck your shit and base arguments for doing it on programs and ideals that were not meant to be fucked up. Let me think of an example…Im rushing (trying to write a brief at the same time BAD LAWYERING)…can anyone help me?
Indians got the crap end of the stick when it came to reparations. Have you been to a reservation? Some reservations look like concentration camps where drugs and alcoholism is common please. Not to mention the educational and economic resources that the Indians have access to are very limited. Most tribes don’t have full ownership of the casinos and end up being exploited by major corporations. In other others the revenue from casinos rarely touch the hands of the people.
I attend an interethnic church here in VA and ours is highly successful. We just celebrated 13 years going strong. The apostle of our church is white. The head of the music ministry is black. Likewise, leadership roles and volunteer roles are split evenly among whites and blacks. We also have a Spanish-speaking ministry, with services every Sunday. We helped establish more than ten churches in countries like Uganda, Haiti, and South Africa. Our praise and worship includes everything from Donnie McKlurkin to Mercy Me.
I for one, am proud to attend a church where people of many different backgrounds feel free to worship and learn. It’s a beautiful thing.
@Landon – “Reparations if given should be placed in special accounts were people are given a card. ”
This breeds dependency, if you look at what happened to the Native Americans, aside from genocide, one of the most destructive things that happened in that society was when they became completely dependent on the US government after having their land taken.
If anything we need industry, if they opened factories in black communities whose complete ownership would eventually be turned over to the community, that built alternative energy products and trained black people to operate these factories it would be more beneficial and self-sustaining; not to mention producing something that this country badly needs.
hahaha B4prez… i was on vaca in the bahamas so yea i got my drank on..then came back state side and got sick as shit…and now i’ll be off another 2-3 weeks because i fractured my knee playing basketballl over the weekend…other than that im just lucky go happy….
@ Jen: Woefully Pessimistic? Since when does being a realist AND stating facts make one woefully pessimistic or out of touch?
Not all people have connections to the organizations you’ve mentioned.
Not everyone can say that they’ve been helped by X, Y, and Z.
I’m speaking on what I’ve seen and what I’ve been exposed to, and seeing as how you don’t know what the hell I’ve seen or been exposed to, you can take your one sided and close minded comments elsewhere.
“This breeds dependency…”
I would like to cosign with Omar’s critique of Landon’s plan.
That would be a disaster. The government having to sign off on my wedding and car purchase plans and manage my shit in order for me to qualify for reparations? No thank you. Keep your fucking money.
Esquire and Jen and anyone else…
Esquire managements job is to know how to motivate people and bring the best of them… you think that is a good program you should see the incentives for working at the SBPH financial. Work week is Monday thru Thursday 8 to 6.
4 weeks vacation, day care center in building, 15 minute massages provided in the morning and afternoon for each employee, In house bar for tough meetings (only after 5pm), revolving sport tickets for all events. Venture capitalism for 5 year employes who have a good business idea.
With reparations we would try to build / take over a small city with real estate development and new business and move the most affluent of the SPBH Enterprises to have our own CITY so it would be ran how it should be!
BET is not allowed in the city!
When it comes to diseases that are pandemics, I think the govt is within their power to step in and take reasonable measures to prevent the spread of the diease. HIV/AIDs is not a pandemic and it shoudl be a required test with any medical check up. Personally I find it absured that HIV/AIDs test aren’t required.
ok, there are a lot of black organizations that do great things for the black community but as a whole, we don’t always support each other. it goes way beyond those organizations. in this world, in the black community, its every man for them self. unless you can show me how thats supporting one another… i stick to that
TB testing is not mandatory…until you show signs of it. TB is a HIGHLY infectious disease. You can catch that bitch by looking at someone.
AIDS….not so much.
Landon–ever heard of “The Village”?
@mrsepps – lucky my ass, lol…u been messin wit those creoles?
its not the government its ran by SPBH enterprises… see my second note about taking over a city and taking care of the finances. This program would breed business and self awareness. We would build from the ground up. Invest in our own programs and schools. Its not dependency its a growth model… MUSE is our senior financial analyst by the way.
@ brran1- you are neither being a realist nor stating facts.
What you have said is that Black people do not help one another and that one of the primary reasons that Blacks suffer disproportionately in this country is that we are lazy and do not take advantage of opportunity.
Sounds like you’ve been drinking that white supremacy Kool Aid. I know it may taste sweet at first, but the effects of intaking that your whole life are truly a bitch.
your right about TB and with that said why is that more people are infected with AIDS???
Dude dude dude dude DUDE!
The friggin muscle-mass -> unfair calculations of ‘overweight’ applies to only a TINY fraction of black women (or any women, for that matter) that are considered overweight.
We are fucking FAT, people. The goddamn excuses are literally killing us by the thousands. I was at the DMV today at the butt-crack of dawn with 63 women in line behind me, and ALL BUT ONE were fucking fat (yes, I counted – because of the whole fatass test debacle from last Friday).
The difference between Serena Williams and the typical fat girl claiming that muscle makes her heavier:
1.) When I look at Serena and someone tells me she’s overweight, I call that person a fucking liar.
2.) When I look at a fat girl and she tells me she’s overweight because of muscle mass, I call HER a fucking liar.
Damn the actual numeric value of your weight. If you are jiggly, have no muscle definition, etc., YOU ARE FAT. Please stop killing yourself with the goddamn excuses.
Yoga is not a workout. Put down the fork.
Esquire, TB testing is required for all children who wish to enroll in public schools.
Sorry Chris; I was trying to make a point but if I offended you I apologize.
Um…HIV/AIDS tests were required at my hospital after you become sexually active…
100% over Black people complaining about Black organizations they choose not to belong to. The only ones who we can hold accountable, en masse, are the ones that claim to represent the needs of all Blacks: the NAACP (will only get involved if there is media fame to be had and if the Black in question has been victimized by a White person/corporation), the Congressional Black Caucus, etc. I would say something snide about the Southern Christian Leadership C (what’s the other C stand for?) embarassing themselves in an in issue with Wal-Mart (their benefactor) lately, but as I am allergic to the South and Christiantity, I reckon they don’t claim to speak for me (which is for the best).
Actually one of my goals after Business School is get leverage my background in finance and working at the UN by making a transition into Venture Capital and (then eventually start my own firm) where I can provide capital for businesses in emerging economies. I also want to give capital to minority businesses (not mom and pops but large multimillion dollar companies that will generate jobs and massive revenue for the communities they serve)
“With reparations we would try to build / take over a small city with real estate development and new business and move the most affluent of the SPBH Enterprises to have our own CITY so it would be ran how it should be!”
I prefer ‘SBPH Industries’. It sounds more intimidating.
b4prez-@mrsepps – lucky my ass, lol…u been messin wit those creoles?
hahahah messing with the creoles…how my month has been going its possible. they are the wolf in sheep skin
@SBPH – I agree with you for the most part, but I still think that ignoring physical differences between Black and white body makeup causes the obesity problem within our community to be overstated. The points are not mutually exclusive.
Also, Americans act like the Black obesity problem is a cultural issue limited to Blacks, but it is a national problem. Poor people are overweight. Little Black fatties in the projects are not eating chitlins. They are eating McDonalds and drinking Red Drink just like little white fatties in Appalachia.
Please re-read that.
White Supremacy Kool Aid? Say Wha?
I did not say ALL black people are lazy, nor did I say that black people AS A WHOLE do not help one another.
Doctor’s Vision Works. They have a sale going on. Take advantage of it because it is clear that you need glasses.
SCLC = Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
@Muse, Landon – Over the past year, I have been wondering about the feasibility of a voluntary mini-community/financial coalition kind of like the ones you describe…a sort of private socialism.
Sister Toldja “the NAACP (will only get involved if there is media fame to be had and if the Black in question has been victimized by a White person/corporation)”
i agree. you can see that with Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. they only get involved if the media is all over it.
stilll dying @ Yoga is not a workout. Put down the fork.
they need to print that on a t-shirt.
I agree with him, and have had the same philosophy on reparations for a while. What good would it do us to get a bunch of checks that most of us would just piss away within a week? Let that money go to good use. Re-build the disadvantaged schools, hire more competent teachers, etc.
I am 6’5″ 250 lbs, slim in appearance and can play basketball from sun-up to sun-down(if i had the time) but by many standards I am overweight. If they are going give out tax rebates to people who are in shape they could at least give us a physical fitness test or something because there are a lot of skinny people that can’t run one block but they would be getting a rebate for being in good health.
Couldn’t agree with you more. Just because you’re slim doesn’t mean you’re in shape.
Americans in general are fat because they eat too much food and aren’t mobile. Obesity isn’t just a Black thing at all but an American issue. Americans are lazy and want to do things the easy way which is why the fad diets make millions of dollars per year. We lack discipline and eat our damn feelings instead of dealing with out issues in a constructive way. As someone who has traveled through out improvised countries and seeing people who live on less than 500 calories a day, I’m really disgusted when I see Americans just stuffing their faces to feel the empty void in their lives. Hell I’m no where near fat and I found myself to be grossed out about my little weight gain. Working all the time isn’t an excuse because at the end of the day I have control over what I eat. If I have time to go on the net to bullshit, I can take that 30minutes to a 1 to go running. My dad has a zero tolerance for fat people. He hates them and makes no apologies about it. Fatness to him is a sign of laziness and someone who lacks self control.
Omar is slim? You should change your profile pic brah… I’m just sayin’
Morgan Freeman, AKA God, was in a car accident and has been hospitalized.
Yoga and Pilates is for skinny broads who are already in shape and desire to lengthen their muscles and improve their flexibility. What’s funny is that yesterday I hit up the gym and there was this massive female on a stationary bike just sitting there then she would move her leg every 10 seconds. I was thinking to myself you need to get the fuck up and walk your ass to a treadmill or an elliptical machine.
Fine about the Effing weight issue…
If you do not meet (numbers average) you can take a physical test.
Depending on your age you have to do certain test – run a mile under a certain time, complete a certain amount of push ups and sit ups, lift a certain amount of weights…. if for some reason you are big boneded but still in good shape!!!
@brran1, let me spell this out for you:
THOSE PEOPLE ARE A TINY MINORITY AMONG BLACK PEOPLE.
Why are they worth considering in a discussion geared toward the improvement of our communities? Are feasible plans really going to be based on pathologies common among that tiny minority of people that honestly won’t be helped? Is it even useful to discuss such individuals up front if you are pursuing a fruitful conversation?
I think the answers to these questions are obvious.
My employer has a fitness incentive where they will pay half if your gym membership fees.
“Reparations” as the idea currently stands is, in my humble opinion, of the Devil. There are far too many variables (who even gets money, how much do they get, etc.), and just giving people a large chunk of money and saying “do as you will” with no check and balance system with regard to fiscal responsibility is trouble looking for somewhere to happen. I heartily co-sign with the sentiments regarding investing the money into schools and communities and programs that address the root of the problems. As a former teacher and the child of a teacher I have seen first hand the disparity within the education system and until it changes the whole concept of no child left behind is essentially the equivalent of putting a band aid on a broken leg. Long term investments in education, social responsibility, health awareness, and things of that nature would be in my mind a better form of reparations.
With respect to mandated medical testing, that is a slippery slope and I am of two minds on that point. On the one hand I do not believe that any government has the right to legislate a person’s body or mandate what they must do to/with it. On the other hand I know people who have contracted STD’s from partners and it could have been prevented. While I still do not believe in mandated testing, I think that awareness goes a long way towards prevention and STD and AIDS testing should be part of the general medical check up.
@Jen: Because if you’re going to improve the black community, THAT’S where you need to start.
“I agree with you for the most part, but I still think that ignoring physical differences between Black and white body makeup causes the obesity problem within our community to be overstated. The points are not mutually exclusive.”
I can’t say whether or not the problem is actually overstated. All I can say is that (anecdotally-speaking) when I go out into black venues, well over half the people I see are visibly overweight. You don’t even need to get them on a scale to notice it. The Serena Williams types are certainly out there – but they’re a rarity and, if they’re the cause of the overstatement of black obesity, then the overstatement isn’t very significant.
If you were to condense the situation to 100 black women (I’m excluding black men, because more fat dudes = less competition for me):
100 black women total
According to statistics: 50 of them are overweight
In actuality: 40 of them are overweight, 10 have Serena Williams Complex
Anecodtally:20 of the overweight 40 claim SW Complex
That’s 20% of the population that isn’t getting help because they refuse to even acknowledge the problem.
I take an ‘ends justifies the means’ stance on the obesity issue because it isn’t as socially damning as other skewed statistics like violent crimes and drug use. People need to panic about this, and an overstatement of the problem could be a blessing in disguise.
What reperations could America possibly give us that could even scratch the surface of what has been done to us for centuries? What dollar amount can you place on what started with the Middle Passage and continues with Sean Bell? A million dollars? A billion? Fuck, they’d have to turn the entire country over to us (no, electing Obama don’t count). And we’d then lose it in a dice game with Germany, right?
I support reperations, but I do agree that White people will say “and we are done!” afterwards. HOWEVER, y’all do know that White people will feel that the work is “done” if Obama is elected. “Gee golly wiz, Shanika. How can this be a racist country? We have a Black president for christsakes!”
My frustration with a lot of Black people is that we have become a community of excuses. Granted that as a group we are subjected to institutional and systematic discrimination but on the same token we still have a choice to work hard and try to make a better life for our families. Nowadays parents aren’t taking a proactive role in making sure their kids are hitting the books instead of the street. We are encouraging our boys that athletics, street life, and entertainment are the avenues to prosperity. Our young women don’t have any damn standards and fall for the first loser that gives them a smile. What happened and why aren’t people taking a real look at our communities instead of blaming the rest of the world? Reparations and government assistance will not fix the plight going on within the Black community unless MINDSETS are changed. You can’t give someone 100 grand who has no concept of money management. As the saying goes, give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime (or something like that)
As a person who works in TB Control, let me dispel a few myths about this disease– here is a quick and dirty TB 101
1. TB is altogether easier to catch than HIV… but its still pretty hard to catch. You need to get into whether the person has an infectious form (pulmonary) of the disease and it also depends on how long you were exposed.
2. TB infection and diease are not the same thing. You can be infected (i.e. have a positve PPD) and NEVER get sick or be able to make anyone else sick. Way more people are infected with TB than HIV and don’t know it– but they only have a 10% chance of getting sick over their entire lifetime. HOWEVER, you are more likey to become sick from TB infection if you are HIV positive/immunosupressed in any way (diabetes, corticosteroids, recent surgery etc). TB is tricky that way.
3. TB testing is NOT FEDERALLY MANDATED ANYWHERE (even public schools) unless you are a) a recent immigrant from a country where TB is endemic, b) a person considered to be at high risk for TB infection– health care worker, correcional facility employee, contact to an active infectious case, etc. or c) have suspected disease without a documented PPD result.
@brran1 – no, dear. If your goal is to help the community, you should start by helping those who want to be helped, not by griping about those whom you cannot.
I said that earlier..TB testing is not required for homeschoolers, COLLEGE, or private schoolers.
Thats a lot of people.
The point is…you cant make someone take pills, get stuck with needles. Not cool.
@ Jen: Since when does stating fact equate with griping? Last time I checked, it did not.
I agree that those that want help should be helped first, but if we want to influence some type of change, you have to change the thought process of those that think they have it figured out already. That way it’ll give future generations a fighting chance.
@SBPH, I think you are almost right about the idea that “20% of the population that isn’t getting help because they refuse to even acknowledge the problem.”
I honestly think people would eat healthier if they could. It is just expensive and time-consuming to eat properly. My eating habits go to hell when I am busy.
Anyway, I think this refusal to acknowledge the problem is an American issue that is only slightly aggravated by Black culture and its preference for women that are, frankly (don’t tase me, bro), somewhat overweight.
Weight and class are tied as well. You won’t see many morbidly obese White women in the ‘shopping at Bendels, living on the Upper West Side” crew, but go to where the poor White folks are and you will see plenty of them. However, there is a great deviation here when it comes to Blacks. While middle and upper class Blacks seem to work harder than poorer and/or uneducated ones to stay fit, obesity is still somewhat acceptable in the former group:
1) many “successful” Blacks are from humble begginings, they are not so culturally different than poorer Black folks, who condone obesity (not all poor Blacks do, obvs).
2) Our standards of beauty are different than thin-obsessed Whites. While both Black AND White American cultures place beauty before health (see the scores of White women I would deem to be “decidedly anorexic”), White female beauty places a high value on thinness and physical fitness, whereas Black female beauty is based on tits, hips, asses and thighs, all of which can stand in lovely proportions on an overweight woman.
I don’t think we need to obsess over being skinny like the 2520s, I just think that every person everywhere should make sure that they eat like they have some sense and have a consistent workout routine in their lives. You don’t have to run a marathon, just be able to run PERIOD.
The article had no idea what it really wants to say, nor does the network. Friday they said that McCain and Obama were neck and neck, because whie Americans don’t want to support Mr. War Vet, they also don’t want to support an underexperienced politician (read: NIGGA). Like they cited in the article: this has been a stance of Obama’s since his statewide race for Senator. Reparations won’t help, and by improving ‘inner’ city education and healthcare, blacks can have a little come up. Nothing, however, will ever 100% take away from centuries of racism that’s STILL going on today, so what’s the hullabaloo about? I mean, that tax rebate was just a little salve for a short term, not an end all to be all for the sucky ass ecomony.
And Congress just voted on whether or not to apologize?! WTF?
@ST – I couldn’t agree more. YT’s are all ready practicing how they’re going to say that racism is over if Obama wins. They could at least cut me a check b4 they say it….I’m just sayin.
And Chris is right w/ that theory, typically any black venue will have 50 fat ppl out of 100 total ppl. What I will say though, is that physical fitness is honestly still a pretty new concept to many black ppl. It’s always been ‘good’ to have some ‘extra meat on ur bones’, by their standards. Everything in soul food is fattening and artery clogging (thanks slavery, where’s my check) and eating healthy and exercising after working and beating bad ass kids all day is still new. I’m not denying the basic FACT that it’s time for change, in more ways than 1, but I see why it’s so hard to scratch this itch.
BTW, I’m not fat AT ALL! Just in case sum1 was ready to try me.
If the govt requires that testing, they will use that argument to require all kinds of things. Seriously.
Fat people are gross. I appreciate every fat person at the gym who is actually sweating and trying to lose their flab. I hate fat people at the gym who are just kind of walking along on a treadmill or slowly bicycling or pedaling slowly on an elliptical. You aren’t going to lose fat if you don’t sweat. So SWEAT dammit!
By the way, I am not fat at all. As a matter of fact, I’m in great shape. Although I think every one of the regular commentors knows that.
brran1, what you said was ugly, irrelevant and arbitrary. You are doing a good job at cleaning your BS up, but you really don’t have to take it any further. I called you out a little more rudely than I should have, but that’s me. Stop bitching about how Black people don’t help one another when that is a lie from the devil. Stop immediately playing the lazy Negro trump card in discussions of problems with our community. Most poor Blacks are as they are because they lack education and opportunity, not because they are lazy. The end. Agree or agree to disagree. All I was saying is that we have too many real problems for you to be showcasing the least of these.
I agree with ST 100%. I am terribly out of shape. I could not run around a city block one time if Tyra Banks and Tina Knowles were chasing me with a lacefront wig and a crate of relaxer. But, I find it difficult to begin working out because Black men are constantly telling me I need to gain weight and eat something.
Maybe it’s me but I don’t know too many black men who equate being fat to having curves. In fact Black people tend to confuse the two. Fat rolls are not curves. I think Black men in general like women with healthy bodies. Hell men, even the white ones, like a fit woman who has a hips, ass, and nice breasts. I’m not sure where the lines between being fat and curvy got blurred.
All this talk of stationary fat people at the gym has got me finna die laughing.
Esquire, I highly doubt required testing for HIV will lead to anything else. If anything, it’ll give us better statistics about the actual problem of HIV/AIDS and help people get help for it.
@Muse, I blame the Tip Drill video.
Fat rolls are not curves.
Huh? Monique is wrong?
Monique is very wrong and should be jailed for spreading horrible lies
I’m torn on the reparations issue because it’s symbolic to me: the government became rich of my ancestor’s labor and I deserve something in return. I will be paying off law school loans for the rest of my life, while Becky’s parents footed the entire bill. For that, an apology is not enough. It’s actually a fkcing insult to me. I wish Dave Chappelle was still on the air to tackle that scene– Congressional apology.
But yeah, a lump sum is not going to cut it either…. It won’t address the deep-rooted issued in the community the same way that health care and education will. Plus, whoever commented that we’d have to estimate “how many hours our ancestors worked….” ummm… that is ridiculous. IT WAS MUFUCKIN SLAVERY!!! THEY WORKED LIKE SLAVES!! So reparations by money is not a good idea either.
But we are still owed 40 acres, so I think land grants could be in order…. Land grants with gardens and such… I don’t know. Something, though. We deserve something.
This happens all the time. If you begin saying, AIDS is a crucial problem lets have mandatory testing. This argument can AND WILL be used to test other things…such as diabetes (crucial problem) STDS (huge problem) heart disease, sickle cell…etc…
Lets test babies for genetic deficiencies…and then lets kill thier little asses off. Lets see how many AIDS babies there are then lets use them and run experimental drugs on them.
This is why people will fight you tooth and nail not to require this. Basing arguments on other arguments to do things is the entire foundation of legal history. Thats what we DO. We take lil fractions of an ideal and try to apply it to what we WANT to make it seem logical..(sometimes it is…sometimes it isnt)
I.E. Cloning dogs is okay…see we did it…So cloning Humans is okay….negative.
There’s a very easy way to tell who is overweight and who isn’t. It’s commonly known as the “tire test”. If your waste/gut is wider than your bust/butt, you’re in trouble.
Large fat deposits around the waste are considered a dead give-away by most medical professionals.
LOL on fat rolls not being curves. That is the truth full stop. The now ex-boyfriend has been complimenting me as of late because i’ve been working out constantly (1 hour classes at the gym every day for two weeks and various toning classes interspersed) and my legs are bigger than they used to be but they are all muscle which I don’t like personally so I’ve started doing more yoga.
But the point is, curves=muscular, fit, body. Not fat fatty fat fat.
I know I am being extreme, but health law was one of my favorite courses. lol.
Also, as blacks, we know that the govt is NOTORIOUS for slippery slopes.
If you give them an INCH…they will take much much more. Mandatory AIDS testing can lead to some awful things. A lot of things with good intentions are used to do things will ill intentions….AKA the CRACK COCAINE LAWS.
@Jen: Ugly, irrelevant, and arbitrary? Ok. If you say so.
The only one spitting BS here is you. You make it seem as if my comments were geared towards ALL black people (including myself) which they were not.
And far as calling me out on something, you did nothing of the sort because I was mentioning something I have seen with my own eyes.
We will have to agree to disagree on this one, but please remember that just because you have not seen things or chose to ignore things that you have seen or experienced, does not invalidate the experiences of others.
Fuck it…give me the money and I’ll distribute it as I see fit.
Tomato, I commend you. I ran around the block two weeks ago. After almost passing out and getting left my caring husband. I decided to say fuck it, Im skinny. (this is a totally unhealthy reason, I am still prone to diabetes and heart disease because of genetics)
Shit, its 100 degrees here.
Cloning humans will never happen. Ever. Unless someone puts up a lot of their private funds and does it illegally because it’ll never be legal in the United States, there are way too many problems and variables related to cloning a human.
I plan on testing my babies for genetic problems before they come out.
Diabetes is a crucial problem and should be tested for as is heart disease. Sickle cell isn’t that HUGE of a problem but it would be good if there was testing for it. I don’t see why letting a person know they have these problems or not is a bad thing.
This is how you know if you’re fat. Thanks Chris
The SBPH Fatass Test
Section 1 – If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you have failed the fatass test. Do not bother moving on to Section 2 of the fatass test.
1.) When standing, do you have to bend over to see your toes or penis?
2.) Have you ever been offered a red sweater and a job as the ‘Kool-Aid Man’?
3.) Does your navel look like a sad face?
4.) Do you have more than 1 chin?
5.) Do you have pockets even when you’re completely naked?
6.) Do you roll out of bed instead of jumping out of bed?
7.) Do you fall into chairs rather than sitting down in a controlled manner?
8.) When you tell children you don’t have chocolate, do they call you a liar?
9.) When you put on tight jeans, does ANY flesh roll out below the top of the pants?
10.) Do you find this test offensive?
If you said ‘No’ to all these, proceed to section 2.
0 – 2 ‘Yes’ Responses: You are wonderfully healthy. If you are a girl, call me.
3 – 4 ‘Yes’ Responses: You’re “a chicken box away”. Watch yourself
5 – 10 ‘Yes’ Responses: Put down the fork
1.) Is a 2 mile non-stop run beyond your physical abilities today?
2.) Do you eat more than 3000 calories a day?
3.) Do you define walking as a workout?
4.) Do you think grape jelly counts as a fruit?
5.) Do you hate being on top during sex?
6.) Do people hate you being on top during sex?
7.) Is a treadmill an ancient type of crane?
8.) Does the thought of a ‘running’ date enrage you?
9.) Are you more than 50% likely to take the elevator less than five stories up?
10.) Do you find this test offensive?
This had me dying so I figured it was a good excuse to get a few more laughs out of it.
Esquire, lawdy I tried spinning class yesterday and nearly passed out. An hour of pedaling at breakneck speed will make you wonder why in the hell you ever decided to start working out.
But then I remembered this morning when that little bit of jiggle I’ve had for two years is firming up 🙂
I come back from gorging myself on rice noodles and the chicken, and y’all talking about fatasses again? Damn.
Esquire, how about I just continue to demand that my sexual partners take HIV tests? LOL.
Folks should want to know their status but I guess ignorance is bliss right?
“And Chris is right w/ that theory, typically any black venue will have 50 fat ppl out of 100 total ppl” – I wonder if this is because more fat people are single and need attention, but I’m just being argumentative at this point…
America makes entirely too much money off of shit that will kill you so they don’t care and have no desire for people to be healthy… stuff like Alcohol, cigarettes, McDonalds, Krispy Kreme, Popeyes, BET…
@Tomatohead – Black people are already disadvantaged when it comes to acquiring adequate health benefits, even when adjustments are made for class and income. I think the AIDS thing would worsen that problem. I also just know that it could be leaked or sold to insurance companies or used to track people and effect their ability to be employed and any other number of things. The idea of the government manning that sort of sensitive information freaks me out.
thats exactly my point. The govt will begin testing for shit that they shouldnt. What concerns is me is how they will use the data. Yea, it seems like for good. But there is a real potential for this to be a scarlet letter.
Do you know the formula for where they put prisons? they combine the socioeconomic class, the education scores, and the DRUG USE RATES. Then they stick the prison near those communities. Wonder why there’s no prison near the Hamptons?
point is…certain testing and those results can be used for shit that its not supposed to be used for…which is to solve the problem
Don’t you have doctor-patient privacy laws? Like, I don’t know if this is true but isn’t the law that your doctor can’t release your medical records?
Are the 2520s any better off with anorexia/ bullimia than we are with some jiggle?
I mean, is it worse to be average sized and have some wobble wobble in the booty, or to make yourself throw up so you can be a size 0?
I think its positive that Black images of beauty allow for the former.
Someone want to come up with a fat test for the men? I feel like we are unfairly focusing on the women. I see a lot of men with boobs that rival mine (well, not MINE, but you get the drift).
lol amen to that! Just dont let the govt tell them they HAVE to.
“I also just know that it could be leaked or sold to insurance companies or used to track people and effect their ability to be employed and any other number of things.”
This is such a hugeeee problem. You dont think that people would be discriminated against if they were required to take that test and someone found out the results….
Also how often are you required to take the test??? There is no vaccine for AIDS. It just shouldnt and couldnt work
‘Alcohol, McDonalds, Krispy Kreme, Popeyes,’ —– mmmmm
@Omar – I think the reason is just that too many black ppl are fat, lol
1st question for men’s fat test.
Do you think Bowling is a sport?
Fat test for the men is harder, because most women have never been with a big man, but all these dudes up here talking ish, have been with a big woman… That says a lot right there!
But one of the Men’s Fat Test questions could be: Does your gut hang lower than your ballzack?
So does anyone have a problem with foreign nationals being required to take mandatory HIV/AIDS tests? Because this is current procedure by our gov’t.
Hmm. Could Roller Skating be considered a sport?
Re: Health…part of the “reparations” could go to tax breaks for stores that offer a certain percentage of healthy choices. I don’t even mean tofu…I just mean having some damned vegetables. Walk into a corner store or the “restaurants” in a low income area. That’s why people aren’t healthy. Around my job a decent meal is out of the question…I’d have to go downtown to get something resembling healthy food.
Fat test for men: Have you been able to see your dick for the last year?
@ Riz- I agree….to an extent. I think to be anorexic/bulimic is just as bad as to be severly overweight. And while I think our self image has allowed us to see beauty beyond a size 2, which is excellent, we cannot accept a size 22 and defend it with “but I LOOK good”.
Muse- You are in LA, educated, etc. The “Chrises” may dominate the circles we run in, but there are plenty of Black men (across socio-economic groups) who like big women. Many would stop short of say, Monique big, but they would find a sturdy size 18 gal quite fetching. Especially if she had tits and ass. I met a guy and didn’t see him for months, over which I had lost about 25 pounds. When I saw him again, he was suprised that I had lost weight and didn’t understand why I would do so. He didn’t discourage me from dropping pounds, but he said I was “fine before”. I know this is not the standard (particularly amongst the men I would prefer to date), but it is common with our people.
there are plenty of dr patient laws….but laws are meant to be broken eh?
Also MASS data…with no names on it protects individuals, but FUCKS UP a community. See what they did with the VOLUNTARY test results from DC. Now AIDS is a totally black disease…the problem with labeling it as a black disease it that slowly…ahhh…slowly…the funding for research is picked picked picked away…the people who want to work and find a cure…are…slowly encouraged to do cancer research…
As does the dieting industry.
@riz – both sides of the coin are problems…but a problem is problem
Fat test for men- what is your cup size?
If you answer anything other than “WTF? I don’t have breasts!”, you may be fat.
I know the men you are talking about. They all live down south with me. No one trusts a skinny cook.
Fat Test for men…Do you tuck your gut into your pants?
My old E.D. used to do that….ewww.
ST–the tire test works for men too. Gut > Butt != Healthy.
Sister Toldja (17:59:04) :
“Fat test for men- what is your cup size?
If you answer anything other than “WTF? I don’t have breasts!”, you may be fat.”
Oh, that type of cup, honest mistake…
Fat test for men: do you have a front butt?
sturdy size 18 gal HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA You make her sound like furniture! I get your point though.
OMG fat guys are not the business. A man is fat when he starts to get curves or his belly hangs over his penis.
Wait. How can you tuck your gut into your pants?
Have you seen the security guard on Martin? Like that.
TomatoHead had it…the front butt. When the gut is so big you pull your pants up over it so there is a big roll of fat hanging under your belt….it’s funny to hear those guys tell people to pull their pants up.
*has been fatter*
*has bigger breasts than most asian women*
*can see penis with ease*
*works out regularly and used to play sports in HS*
*will proceed to eat chicken*
Oh, BTW: Yoga IS a workout! Anyone who has ever done Bikrahm yoga has sweat a lot more than anyone on a treadmill. There is also all kinds of power yoga.
So just bc I don’t fck up my knees by taking jogs and runs, I object to the idea that I don’t work out!
And try to tase me on that one, bro! I got pics of how I look. I’ll tase back!
Fat Test for Men: Is, “Can you cook?,” the first question that you ask a woman? Do you tend to ask this question while beads of sweat roll down your temples?
i did have chipotle yesterday, but at least i had the salad/bowl deal.
@Esquire @ Amadeo
OOOOH. Otis. I know what yall mean now.
Um…yeah, Yoga can test you. It’s actually REALLY good for athletes, easier on the joints.
Fat Man test question: Do you snore while wide awake?
Male fat test question:
Can you sit a beer mug or can on your stomach without it falling off?
Bikram yoga is hell….and really quite gross.
Male Fat Test Question: Do you sweat after taking a shower? Or are you ever really clean smelling?
great googely moogley that thang is jiggly…..damn three-six mafia…
anyone remember this song…
Fat man test question: Does your butt crack sweat?
Fat man test question: Is Homer Simpson your idol?
TomatoHead the better question is: Do you get batwings or swampass?
(urbandictionary is your friend).
Can one of you ladies please focus and come up with a unified Fatman Test?
All these sporadic piecemeal responses…it’s like watching The View or some shit.
If this is The View, I’m waiting for an Elizabeth Hasselback (sp?) to start crying because she can’t call black ppl “nigga.”
Fat man question: Do more than 10% of the pants/trousers in your closet include elastic in the waistband?
Can you (successfully) perform the missonary position without physical injury to your partner?
Fan man test: Do people come up to you and ask, “Dayum, Ruben, I thought you lost weight!”
If this is The View, I nominate JoelThen to be our Elizabeth Hasselbeck.
Fat Man Test: Do your balls reek of sweat and barbecue sauce?
“Fat test for men- what is your cup size?
Sadly I have seen/know some people who can answer to at least a B cup and that hurts my heart and seriously upsets my spirit.
I agree. Reparations are the equivalent of settling out of court. From an economic perspective, I’m not for anything, at this point, that would send the country further into the downward spiral of debt and mayhem it’s currently in.
Bajan Girl: “Sadly I have seen/know some people who can answer to at least a B cup and that hurts my heart and seriously upsets my spirit.”
Fat man test: are your fingers cheetoh flavored?
I am not qualified to take a fat man test because I like chubby mean and secretly fantasize about giving the man that I marry a pot belly.
I am a terrible person.
Fat man test: Did you cause the most recent earthquake in LA?
Ugh…create, not take.
Fat man test- Do you pour the extra grease out the pan on your bacon because you say thats where most of the flavor is?
So is this a good or bad thing?
Jen….I cannot even fathom what you have just said…blech. You wanna have a jolly St Nick for a husband?
FAT MAN SAMPLER:
(1) Do you often breath with your mouth open while sitting still?
(2) Do you use sugar, honey, or syrup on items that do not require sweetening, i.e. grits or fish?
(3) Do you require a mirror to see your long-lost penis?
(4) Do you require a mansserie?
(5) Do the jokes in Eddie Murphy’s Nutty Professor offend you?
(6) When dining at a buffet, do you ask for doggy bags?
If you answer “yes” to any of these, you’re fat.
Fat man test- Do you wear a “Bro”?
Fat man test: Does your belly jiggle like a bowl full or jelly?
Richard Posner, a Univ. of Chicago Law School professor — very well respected though slightly insane economics/law expert — wrote a paper recently about obesity. ONe of his more interesting points was that a majority of black women are overweight because unlike white women, black women don’t have as much economic or social incentive to remain thin. For white women, being thin means snagging a higher-earning man and having higher social status. For a black woman, being thin only slightly increases your chances of getting such a man because the supply of such black men is so much smaller. So when you weight (pun intended) all the balances, then it’s probably easier to just have that second cheeseburger and not sweat out your perm cuz you’re still not very likely to get that rich dude who’s going to set you up in that big house in the burbs anyway.
*Don’t get mad at me. Find the article; it’s out there somewhere.*
Laurel – Damn. That’s sad. I don’t wanna make fun of fatasses anymore.
Not obese, but chubby. I know I am a hypocrite for bitching about men telling me to lose weight, but chubby men are so cute. They make me want to feed them cookies.
Sorry, but fck Posner. His theories strips humans of their humanity. He needs to stay completely out of race relations because, contrary to his own bloated sense of self– not every single societal ill can be traced to law and economics. And even if it can, then what solutions does he offer? Does Posner support reparations? He is from the shool of thought who ignores race and makes everything merely “economic…” Like all those people who say Katrina had nothing to do with race, but only money.
I don’t buy it.
Laurel – ain’t that the truth. Of anecdotal evidence counts for anything, big black women ain’t hurtin’ for men anymore than us skinny bitches.
telling me to lose weight = telling me NOT to lose weight
Laurel: ‘it’s probably easier to just have that second cheeseburger and not sweat out your perm cuz you’re still not very likely to get that rich dude who’s going to set you up in that big house in the burbs anyway.’
LOL…Have a few Country Club 40’s while ur at it….SMH
What about big Black women who make their own money?
And then, why wouldn’t white heiresses and other rich white woman get big, too?
but chubby men are so cute. They make me want to feed them cookies.
This sounds so adorable…that’s sick!
Jen you sound like my sister. She likes her men “soft”, as she says. She likes a bit of fluff to squish into whilst cuddling.
Yep B4Prez… at least a B cup… and they were ok with this, that is what made it worse! Man boobs are of the Devil plain and simple. If you are a guy and there is a chance that a nursing baby could mistake your breasts for those of his/her mommy’s there is something VERY wrong!
“Fat Man test question: Do you snore while wide awake?”
Economics 101 = Fuck you, Pay me.
Chubby men have pillows for tummies and they are nice to fall asleep on. I think this may also be why men like big boobies.
I like men with big shoulders.
That is all.
What if it’s the morning after a really crazy saturday night?
Amadeo – “Economics 101 = Fuck you, Pay me.”
Haha! Love it. This needs to be in every high school class syllabus.
AAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA – Amadeo, sometimes your distiguished gray-haired balls reek of barbecue sauce the next day? Gross. Soap and water man, soap and water.
As long as you don’t have fart balls.
Are you talking Suge Knight big or Bookman from GoodTimes big?
Step 2: If so, can you see your balls well enough to clean them properly? If not, then proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: WTF were you doing that involved balls and barbecue? If your sexual escapades include any food other than whipped cream and/ or chocolate, then you’re definitely a fat ass.
Speaking of Katrina…there is ANOTHER HURRICANE headed toward us as we speak.
Damn, damn, damn……
This is pointless… http://www.buythecase.net/product/19083/koolaid_sugar_free_tropical_punch_drink_mix/?engine=googlebase
Damn, it’s a hurricane now? Not that punk Ed, huh?
Big Boobs are for motorboating.
Ugh! I have no patience for fat men!
“Step 3: WTF were you doing that involved balls and barbecue? If your sexual escapades include any food other than whipped cream and/ or chocolate, then you’re definitely a fat ass.” – Or this could mean you partner is fat and the only way to get her lazy behind up and do the deed was to lure her with barbecue sauce…
Maybe they were living up to: Big girls need love to?
Just a theory.
NASA has sent all of its employees home and has moved mission control and shuttle operations to Florida. Boeing has called a cat 3 emergency and transfered ops to Seattle. They are trying to play it cool so that we don’t experience widespread panic like what happened with Rita, however I will follow the lead of the big boys and get the hell out of dodge.
Suge Knight and Bookman are both bigger than I have ever considered.
IDK about laying on a big dude’s belly..aren’t they constantly hungry? It would be like a bubbly lullaby, and I’d never be able to sleep with bubble guts and fish dreams in my ear.
@ Amadeo and Omar,
Luring a partner with bbq sauce makes you an accessory to fat assedness, which is a clownable offense.
Designer, it looks like it’s gone down to a Tropical Storm. As a Florida girl, this means to us, sit outside with some liquor and watch. 😉 But if you do stay, be careful!
Is it just me or is the ratio of big girl realtions ships like this:
Big girl/big man – 20%
Big girl/skinny man – 33%
Big girl/average size man – 14%
Big girl/muscular man – 33%
I am a wrong because i am going to have Weight Requirements in my Pre-Nup????
I hate you all.
Amadeo – that’s pretty accurate. You rarely see two tank-asses together. And “average” men usually go for petite chicks. Why is that???!!!??
Dying at my desk from the SBPH Fatman test questions!
My brother is hella muscular. Looks like a body builder. Married to a big girl. Go fig. Every holiday, they tell me that I’ve been around too many skinny 2520s and that I need to stop losing weight. =/
@omar- that’s a lot of money for some drank that doesn’t have sugar OR alcohol in it…
Am I the only one who has considered googling fat people porn in order to find out exactly how that 20% gets the deed done?
@jen- nope, cuz if i weren’t on my work computer, i’d be doing the exact same thing…
“I am a wrong because i am going to have Weight Requirements in my Pre-Nup????”
You are not wrong, you are a business man. A similar agreement will be in place for SBPH Airlines.
“Am I the only one who has considered googling fat people porn in order to find out exactly how that 20% gets the deed done?”
It is not worth it. IT IS NOT WORTH IT.
Knatural, what is petite?
This confuses me.
To this day, people call me petite, but I am of above average height and am nearly 20 lbs more now than I was at my adult thinnest.
I don’t want to see. I think of the dude from the House Party Movies… I couldn’t take him and a female counter part.
Pre-nup weight requirements??!! That’s so weird…I always see beanpole black guys with jello-jiggler 2520s or stay-puff asians and latinas!
former lurker (19:19:16) :
“@omar- that’s a lot of money for some drank that doesn’t have sugar OR alcohol in it…”
Yeah and who REALLY makes sugar-free Kool-Aid?? That’s like a tobacco-free cigarette…
I was on a plane once, sitting in my aisle seat, which I prefer for my personal reasons, and this fat dude came up and asked me to switch seats with him because he was in the middle. I told him No. Sorry, it was a long flight, and I paid to sit comfortably in the aisle.
He had the nerve to get mad at me, like I was the one who force fed him pizza and burritos dipped in ranch dressing for the last 10 years. But I wasn’t tryna move. Let that be a lesson learned.
Lord have mercy… HHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But why BBQ sauce? I mean if it is the spicy kind wouldn’t that sting? And wouldn’t you run the risk of the girl forgetting themselves (and thinking they really were chowing down on a rib or steak or something) and taking a bite??
Jen – I don’t know either. Petite, for me, means short limbs, so I have to by petite sizes. Others, just a small frame in general, narrow hips, etc.
Wait…Honey is good for sex…how could honey not be on the list??? If Ohio Players had it on an album cover it works.
“But why BBQ sauce? I mean if it is the spicy kind wouldn’t that sting? And wouldn’t you run the risk of the girl forgetting themselves (and thinking they really were chowing down on a rib or steak or something) and taking a bite??”
only said girl is also fat.
Speaking of stuff that sounds like it doesn’t belong on genitals…
Who has heard of Lemisol??
Lemisol: for a minty-fresh vagina.
@jen- lemisol can’t be safe….can’t be
any obgyns on the board care to confirm?
Ok so I looked up “Fat” porn. And the majority of it was black women. Some who were fat others who were thick. And by think I mean small waists proportionate to their large breasts, hips, and thighs.
Honey belongs nowhere near my vagina or any of my naughty bits.
Oh and a Halls….but that’s not a general thing.
jg14, was there any fat-on-fat porn or was it all…intermorphic…porn?
HHAHAHAHHAHHAA @ intermorphic porn!
I just ate a 15 piece order of wings…does that make me a fat ass?
Co-sign TH: No way to honey.
Have you had a brazillian wax before? You know that post-wax stickiness? You know how uncomfortable it is? I won’t get into details but it involves lips and cheeks that should not be sticking together.
To be honest, I set my limit pretty low: champagne. That is it. Champagne on the abdomen. I leave the rest up to nature.
@JG 14: Why are all the fat women black? I know that there are fat others… just like there are old others in the industry. Is this a white fetish? Fat Black women? I’m confused.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAH Intermorphic Porn!
I think there is demand out there for fat/overweight even obese women. They’re not socially acceptable but it doesn’t mean that men don’t desire them. Maybe the men they’re sleeping with won’t take them out in public — but somebody’s doing them and paying for that porn and jerking off to it.
@Amadeo- cosign the Halls….who knew cough drops could be so…stimulating….and safe. well, sue johanson says it’s safe
Wait…fat porn and none of them were Pacific Islanders?
Riz. – Yes. Fat Black Women are the object of a a white fetishism which stretches back prior to the emancipation of this nation’s slaves. In the early days of this country’s history, our forefathers quietly lusted over their households’ obese and handkerchiefed mammies. That tradition lives on in the quiet popularity of underground BBBW internet porn.
Going off topic of the present conversation (but back to the original), pouring money into inner city schools would be a great idea. Unfortunately, there may be some problems with that.
1. Too much money would likely be focused on secondary schools or higher ed where it’s not as helpful. In California, kids can get straight Fs for all of junior high and thanks to social promotion, advance to 9th grade (because little Johnny’s feelings will be hurt and he’ll be ostracized if all his friends move on without him…nevermind the clowning for being an illiterate idiot). Money should be focused on reforming and revamping elementary and junior high so the kids have a strong foundation for high school and ultimately, more prepared for college.
2. Even if we do give schools the money, what’s the incentive to make the parents give a shit and be participatory in the process? Dammit if, at Back to School Night, I don’t ALWAYS get the parents of the kids who are getting straight As and NEVER see the parents of the kid who is getting Fails and is a disciplinary problem. One of the main things that stopped me from cuttin’ up when I was younger was the threat of an ass whoopin from my mom (hell, even now!). Many kids don’t fear that — in fact, those little fuckers run their parents. At least can we give teachers permission to pop a kid in the mouth if s/he’s talkin’ shit? I’ve been tempted. I’m just sayin.
3. Inner city teachers should get paid more. Maybe this would attract more of the best and brightest to areas that could really use some help. People bitch about teachers and say they don’t deserve more money, but as an inner city teacher (one who’s good, not one of those worksheet/movie playing motherfuckers), I know that I put in a solid day’s work and was usually the last one leaving school. People who are talented in their respective fields aren’t going into a profession where they are underpaid (relative to other industries) and have to deal with mega bullshit.
4. Clean up the damn neighborhoods. No more than two blocks away from my school is the neighborhood “ho stroll.” Gang violence is real and a constant threat (nevermind the kids who romanticize it and are total poseurs).
5. HEALTHY CHOICES! I don’t know if anyone’s ever been to a school cafeteria for schools where the large majority of students are on free/reduced lunch, but it makes me sick. The food is disgusting. The meat has to be like prison grade or worse. The choices are NOT healthy. So what happens? Kids leave school hungry and within a block or two, they hit no less than 5 different fast food chains. Too easy to make a bad choice. Give them healthful, nutritious food at school and 1) maybe we can help the obesity epidemic, and 2) maybe they’ll actually have more energy and focus in class, thus improving learning. I do have to say that California was on the right track with getting rid of soda machines and junk food vending machines at school, but then took a step back with what they have now. Kids do NOT need Gatorade — that shit is just as sugary as soda. Kids do NOT need a Cup o’ Noodles machine (true story, we have one at my school).
All that said, if SBPH Industries ever wants to open a school, please make me principal because I will run that shit with military precision and
Landon, you are wrong because you are a pompous, elitist Morehouse asshole and I pity whomever marries you.
Imperialist dick. Obese porn. Sticky booty cheeks…. I cannot hang.
Gross. Just gross.
I should have added an LOL to make it seem nicer. Whoops.
Ignore the extraneous “and”
Omar- Sugar free Koolaid is GOOD, as is Crystal Light and Wylers Light! My kids will not know the other shit existed.
Just got outta class…hhhmmm…is it worth it for me to try to catch up on topic or should I just jump in on sex talk? Although fatty sex is not something I wanna jump in on :-X
LOL @ Jen..So far it’s intermorphic. But I’m scared to look any further
Thank God (can I say that when I’m talking about porn?) my laptop isn’t able to be screened at work.
Riz… You are asking questions that I my dear cannot answer. lmao
my mom wouldn’t let us drink kool aid because she drank it so much as a child so she didn’t even want it in our house (that, and the fact that i had about ten cavaties by the time i was 12….i had a candy addiction). i finally convinced her to by that sugar free crap, but i added sugar to it anyway.
ten minutes later, i had some tropical punch syrup
In my experience, people who tend to enter marriages with strict weight, height, hair requirements and other superficial stuff like that tend to walk out of that marriage about five years later broke, angry and depressed and asking the same question: “What the f***k happened? I thought I’d met my dream girl/man.”
If I weren’t already on a diet (which I do sporadically to supplement the healthy lifestyle change I began almost two years ago), these comments would make me start one and/or kill myself.
P.s. No to reparations, unless you pay off my student loans. If you get Sallie Mae off my ass you can do whatever you want.
Sugar-free koolaid? No. If you’re gonna have powered drank, go all out!
(1) pour in kool-aid (red)
(2) dump in half pitcher of refined white sugar
(3) add water
(4) add some lemon slices (to fancy it up)
(5) stir and serve with ice
No amount of lemon in the world can “fancy up” colored sugar water.
Now, if you put some lime slices in there…
Joy: “2. Even if we do give schools the money, what’s the incentive to make the parents give a shit and be participatory in the process? I asked the same question, but I guess no one cared to go down this road.
They should just give black people stock in McDonald’s, Popeyes, Cadillac’s, Kool-Aid, Nike, Courvoisier, Newport (cigarettes) and just about any other company that owe half their existence to the destruction of black folks…
…that is reparations enough for me.
@Omar – “They should just give black people stock in McDonald’s, Popeyes, Cadillac’s, Kool-Aid, Nike, Courvoisier, Newport (cigarettes) and just about any other company that owe half their existence to the destruction of black folks…”
I don’t want stock because then I’ll be screwing myself when I bomb their buildings.
@ B4 & Joy
To keep it short…why cut high schools out of the loop…yes it does suck that kids get there and can hardly read. However, what about the kids there who will take advantage of what you place at their finger tips? Plus, now that those kids skated and got passed along into high school…shouldn’t there be more resources for them at that level. They’ll have a harder time trying to get their GED…cause to pass that they’ll need to operate on a 9th grade level. You can’t make parents care…but you can give their kids a better chance.
@joy – Hey, do what you gotta do but they got insurance and then people will just get nervous or scared they will smoke a cigarette, get drunk and eat fast food, then I get paid and when these people kill themselves (slowly) at least they have something to leave their children…
@joy – “5. ”
TEN CO-SIGNS! Someone please make this happen. And “cup o’ noodles” machine?! Quit playin’. That salty mess?
And you are spot-on regarding the free/reduced lunch. My niece told me her high school (which used to be my high school) has like 3 choices EVERYday: Pizza, nachos, or fries. W…T…F. When I was there, the choices were pretty similar, so yeah, we’d hike our asses to the nearest fast food joint. But it was open campus, then. Now, they have to damn near starve because they don’t want to eat that prison bitch lunch and when they do get out of school, they’re ravenous and will eat THRICE as much as they would’ve eaten if they had a nice lunch.
There are kids who are just average in high school. And they can get into a college if someone helps them out– tells them what classes to take and what forms to fill out. This is important because without that type of help, I wouldn’t have made it into college.
I know that we always focus on the emergency situations in our community, and don’t get me wrong– kids who don’t know how to read NEED our help, no doubt. But that quiet kid who doesn’t get into trouble, or isn’t a superstar needs help too. And there are a lot of those out there.
Public school needs help at every level.
and COSIGN to PAYING TEACHERS MORE!!!!
Give teachers two assistants, a bouncer and dictator like authority.
I just stand by the notion that the kids who are going to learn are going to learn. I can’t speak for those who went to ‘privileged’ schools, but if you went to ‘around the way’ elementary school like me, from that age you all ready see that there’s nothing short of beating azz that the teacher could do to get some kids to do their work and behave. Not surprisingly, these are the kids who had all of the at home problems.
Thus, I say that by allotting more funds to get the kids who DO get through HS, on to college, the money will probably be better used. I knew plenty of kids in HS who didn’t go onto college simply because it was a financial reality for them.
ITA. A teacher in my city was seriously attacked by some of her students (four 16-year-old boys) because she wouldn’t allow them to leave the classroom.
I’m staying out of this conversation because I just don’t have anything nice to say about “the children” these days.
@Amadeo – “To keep it short…why cut high schools out of the loop”
Nah, I’m not saying to cut high schools completely out of the loop, but high schools (at least in CA) already get a significant cut of funding just to get kids to pass simple ass tests that they should be able to pass. So, in some respect, the resources for the GED kids that you mention are already there. I do think a plurality of the money should go to the lower and middle grades, but there are still improvements that require money at the high school level. If we’re talking solely high school level, I’d give more money to teachers (both pay rate AND for hiring so there are more elective choices as well as AP courses), MASSIVE facilities upgrades, and revamped school schedule (to include mandatory tutorials, possibly partnering with for-profit tutoring companies). This is all in addition to the stuff I mentioned above.
Then maybe we can stop pretending that we’re doing a good job educating our kids just because some shiny faced 2520 from Yale swooped in with Teach for America for 2 years and pretended to give a shit about the kids to boost their chances at getting into medical school.
“But that quiet kid who doesn’t get into trouble, or isn’t a superstar needs help too. And there are a lot of those out there.”
That is the truth. How does the saying go again? “The squeaky wheel gets the oil”? Well what about the other wheels that are not making any noise?
Public schools do need help at all levels. From paying better salaries across the board in all districts to attract a higher caliber of teacher, to replacing some of the antiquated leadership and procedures of the various Boards of Education.
To Joy and B4Prez, when we were kids my parents would regularly tell the teachers that they had permission to “do whatever was needed” should we act a fool in class, or notify them immediately so they could come and handle it (or send grandma). I kept my mouth shut and did what I had to do in school because I lived in perpetual fear of my crazy Bajan mother coming to the school to light my behind up if I did something wrong.
Oh, and I forgot to mention the piece de resistance of my whole plan…
For the students who graduate from high school with some requisite GPA and have fulfilled the state’s requirements, they receive a tuition waiver to any state school to which they are admitted/choose to attend.
Reparation is not the same thing as giving money to public school and for health care. They shouldn’t even used in the same topic. Public school and health care funding is just something that should happen to better the future of America.
I have mixed emotion about reparations. If it happened a while back it would have worked, it just wouldn’t fly right now. Most blacks can’t even trace their history past there great grandma. Plus we are such a mixed race, the stipulations from the government would be like showing prove that (DNA sample) that you are from 100% african ancestry.
but the Jews/Japanese(The Civil Liberties Act of 1988) got reparations remember that? or at least are suppose to
The Civil Liberties Act of 1988, I have not idea why that stupid smiley face came up in my post…
I was one of those kids that was going to learn anyway…however my school was crappy so alot of my learning was on my on. If my school had been better I could have learned a lot more. Not to mention I was in a class where the teacher had to spend more time dealing with those who had problems at home…until around 11th and 12th grade. However, my SAT score could have been higher then it was. If there were less distractions (and if they had been offered – hence money needed) I could have had AP courses. If a school has the money it can afford to separate those kids and deal with them and their issues without stopping class for everyone. Dealing with them requires more resources and more staff. So no matter the mindstate, home situation or ability of a student…the school still needs more funds.
Side note – does anyone believe this?
I haven’t had time to read all the comments, but in case it hasn’t been posted: Happy 47th Birthday Barack Obama!
I wasn’t saying that schools don’t need more money so much as saying that just pumping money into schools w/o getting to the bottom line isn’t going to cut it. For middle and hs i went to a brand new arts magnet school which was actually the best public school in the city. However, we still had all of those knuckleheads and badazzes, esp with all of the sibling admission programs. Now we have to deal with Tyvante and his bad ass lil brother Javonte…all at a brand new school.
@laurel – same thing happened when i was in 7th grade…at the beaurtifully funded magnet school. Most kids bring their problems from home and into the school, whether it’s a magnet or ‘Lean on Me’ High.
@amadeo – I meant to say that I do understand where you’re coming from with the funding thing.
On second thought, maybe Posner had a point. Don’t get me wrong, I HATE Posner, but I just got back from Starbucks, where this FOINE man works. He always hooks me up with extra coffee, so clearly, he taps into my Pavlovian response to caffeine. Maybe that’s why I’m in love. But I never really pop at him– I feel all shy when he talks to me.
All day, I’ve been trying to motivate myself to go work out, but I don’t really feel like it. After seeing this dude, who gave me an extra espresso shot, you’d think that I’d sprint to the treadmill, just in case he’s really interested and not just being polite. But in the back of my head, I’m like: (a) he works at Starbucks, and violates my first rule of dating (huge discrepancy in earning potential always leads to a man acting a fool later on) and (b) he probably has a gf/baby momma/ issues towards Black women. So I’m always nice and polite when he engages me in conversation, but I never do anything about it… And I wrote this instead of going to go work out.
So maybe Posner, the asshole that he is, might be on to something.
Fck it, I’m going to go do some leg raises.
I feel very sorry for anyone who went to underfunded schools, or crappy schools altogether. I didn’t have that experience as I went to charter schools all of my life out in Santa Monica, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades. All of my schools pressed going to college (we had PSAT stuff in elementary school), my high school was very lucky to have a college center where every student was required to attend a meeting with their college counselor and get help with their applications to schools (all of the counselors were parent volunteers) and I took all honors and AP classes from 6th grade on. Had I not gone to college, I would have been an idiot.
But I was very very lucky. There were many kids who were in remedial classes who did not go to college and I always felt that those kids were lazy until I came to college and learned that “laziness”, more often than not, is NOT a factor in whether kids do well or not. It’s their fucked up parents, fucked up living situations and fucked up ideas about life that keep them behind. If someone were to give out reparations I would start from the bottom up; give money to elementary schools, have after school programs for kids so they can get help with their homework and have a sanctuary away from their shitty lives at home, have proper school lunches and breakfasts.
And like some people said, of course there are going to be those kids in class who refuse to learn or just want to be disruptive but in my classes, those kids were in the minority. I feel that if given a better chance at having a great school career starting with the first step in school, those “bad azz” kids might be better because they are being pushed by someone, anyone.
This is so off topic to reparations, fat people, pre nups, etc… but I want to throw out a quick questions to some of the folks here at SBPH:
Do you feel obligated to help your less fortunate family members if you are well off financially? What if you have a cousin who stays broke and is always “borrowing” money or an aunt who just can’t seem to get it together. Is it okay to say no even if you hae the means? What are your boundaries about money when it comes to family?
“Do you feel obligated to help your less fortunate family members if you are well off financially? NO. My grandma..yes. She’s 89 and doesnt work and loves me hard. My moochin cousins? NO. You had the same opportunities as I did. AND why are your nails done as you ask me for 20 bucks.
I have a friend who STAYS broke. but she also stays at the hair/nail salon. Male cousins who have $6000 rims on thier 1993 buicks. FUCK NO you cant have it. I earned it. And you will neva pay me back. I used to “lend” money. I aint seen a dime and am about 7000 poorer for doing it.
Sorry I am bitter. and still at work at 615.
take me as I am
The only sort of reparations I’m for come in the form of paying off student loans.
I also find it odd that most high schools/some colleges do not teach personal finance/investing. This should be a given.
I also like the concept of investing in educational institutions/communities.
But, I am also of the notion that government screws up everything and perhaps it’s time that more programs that are/were once seen as a government-administered given become community-privatized, thus making American citizens more responsible for the state of their surroundings, welfare and future.
There were some other concepts I glanced over in the comments:
I generally agree with Landon but stop short at all the government administered stuff. I’m with Esquire on most issues of government interference, especially when it comes to health.
On Fat; healthy food is expensive. After my first year of college I decided to pursue better health. I hated it but eventually did budget for healthier vittles. So, as far as folks with less income being less healthy, well, if there’s a big mac for $0.99 versus grapes for $2.99/lb then there’s substance to why many would opt for the big mac. Plus, ever notice when you’re really busy at work/studying and hella hungry you’ll come to find healthy places don’t deliver? Or, if they do, it’s in a certain mile radius and there’s a $3.00 delivery fee with $20 minimum order. Pisses me off.
No. My family is very very small and we give money to each other, we don’t lend it. If someone needs money, they are given money. But we only do this because there are a whopping 4 of us.
If I had a larger family, hell no would I lend money to family members unless they were in a sticky financial situation that wasn’t really their fault i.e. staggering medical bill, need a new roof, need house painted, need a car because theirs got mangled in an accident…stuff like that. Lending 20 bucks or 100 bucks is not the business. That kind of shit will never help the idiot family member who always finds themselves in the red.
Ain’t that some sh%t? I’ve family members who’ve taken advantage of immediately family members just the same. Personally, I’m dealing with that stuff now. On the one hand, you want to raise folks up and help out your own-follow that ‘keep it in the family’ concept, on the other, some will just take you for everything you’ve got. At some point you gotta say no.
I can only speak from my experiences but I think that’s also been tearing at black folks in general.
zoso, I totally agree with everything you said. Financial planning should be a class taught at every college/high school in the country. And hell yes healthy food is expensive. The only reason I’ve been staying healthy is because I eat the organic food at the dining hall, Odwalla bars and drink Dasani by the liter (I had two liters yesterday). I think Berkeley has the only dining halls in teh country that have all-organic salad bars and dressings and do not use transfats in any of their food.
When I tried getting healthy food from the grocery store, I was spending upwards of $100 a week on two bags of groceries. That shit is incredibly stupid when i can buy 350 points for dining hall food for $300 and it lasts me all semester.
I just wish there were more options for poor people with everything but I guess that is just one of the many problems “society” faces.
That’s not just a no. That’s a HELL NO. I don’t even loan money to my sister and she’s on the same triflin’ tip. Bitching about her rent going up $25, then I find out she got a new car (which is a bigger gas guzzler, so she’s gonna stay broke), got her tattoo filled in, etc. I’m not even tryna hear it. I do not loan money to family, period. The saying I’ve always heard (and that I agree with) is don’t lend money unless you can afford — and are willing — to never have it paid back.
I came into some money maybe 10 years ago, and people came crawling out of the woodworks to ask for stuff. Each time I let them know that while I’d love to help out monetarily, I wouldn’t be able to do so…but I would help them brainstorm a solution. Teach a man to fish and all that 🙂
I have another relative who makes about 200k per year, can’t manage money to save her life. I’ve tried to help her out and get a financial plan but she refuses to stick with it. She has no savings, no investments, rents an apartment, and spends, spends, spends. She continues to max our her credit cards and she only pays the minimum. Last time I looked at her financial porfolio she had about 120k in credit card debt, 20k in student loans, and only 5k in savings. SMDH.
@TH: I’m actually re-considering going to campus dining halls because groceries are becoming more expensive. Woe is the dollar.
Also, I’m going back and forth on organic. The guys I used to live with (I’m female), swore by organic and that’s all they would eat but I’m still not sure if it’s that much better for the environment, or really so much better for personal consumption. I’m trying to do some research but much is inconclusive (other than the pesticide free fruit). I love grapes!
“Each time I let them know that while I’d love to help out monetarily, I wouldn’t be able to do so…but I would help them brainstorm a solution.”
That’s my new slogan!!
@Zoso – ITA with you about the expense of eating healthfully. I’ve only recently found places where it’s possible to do so more cheaply, but of course, it means you have to make 50-11 stops at different stores. My newest “discovery” is Jewish and Armenian supermarkets. They sell produce super cheap. A good farmer’s market can also have some things more cheap than a supermarket. These kinds of things take better planning and more time, but are doable.
Teaching kids that Flaming Hot Cheetos aren’t a food group would be a good start, too 🙂
@TH – Berkeley is on point! I don’t think UCLA had organic food like that, but they do have a lot of healthy options (including sushi) for people to choose from. No excuses.
I have a policy where I don’t give money to grown ass people money except the elderly or if I have a family member in school. Otherwise tough shit for you. I feel no obligation to give an able bodied grown man/woman money because they failed to plan and/or they can’t live within their means.
Erm rephrase: I have a policy where I don’t give money to grown ass people except the elderly or if I have a family member in school. Otherwise tough shit for them. I feel no obligation to give an able bodied grown man/woman money because they failed to plan and/or they can’t live within their means.
Muse your 200k a year relative is retarded. How in the hell do you squander 200k in a year? I had about 25k come into my hands and I didn’t get through all of it until a year after I got it (although blowing through that much in a year is sad, I spent it on a cruise with my family, first class tickets back to LA from Florida with the family and RENT. Rent is super expensive in my area, I think I paid upwards of $7000 in rent while in school. I could stay in the dorms but who wants that headache?
I have a list of people I’m willing to loan money to. If you cut off 7 fingers I could still count them out. I choose these 3 because they only ask when they need it and they always pay me back. My man got shot in the leg in DC in November so he can’t work because of the nerve damage. I’ve had no issue giving him money (a few hundred so far) because he is one of those three.
The GED situation is sad…most of the kids that do drop out are operating on such low levels that they have a hard time getting up to par to take the test. I do agree with heavy upgrades to elementary and middle…but high school needs serious funds to deal with the kids that are there who got passed along.
I know i am late but in response to sista toldja and whom ever in reference to my weight requirements in my PRE NUP…
I only want that in because i love HER… I dont want her to have bad health and maintaining your weight does not guarantee GOOD Health but it does increase your chances of living longer and better. Plus if she is in shape that sets a better example for my children plus my children would have healthier life styles… I am only want that in to help ensure my family is healthy… is that so SELFISH OF ME?
At first I thought that was mighty vain but from the health perspective it’s not so bad. I mean, most marriages struggle when it comes to money, so health expenses on account of bad eating/lifestyle habits would definitely present financial issues, particularly avoidable financial problems… I still don’t know if that’s pre nup material though. Shouldn’t that be more a mutual understanding and trust between the two of you that out weighs a physical contract… dunno.
everything is mutual until its too late. nothing wrong with having something on paper… everything is always cool until someone wants half…
and to be honest a lot of marriages fall apart when one of the parties lets them self go and the other i no longer attracted…
but at the end i want a healthy family! I understand a woman naturally gains weight after children, but that does not mean you do not hit the gym and try to stay healthy.
Landon tells the truth. I never want to be fat “because I had kids”. I feel really gross when I slightly jiggle when I walk, much less because of a bunch of belly fat…ew. Besides, the average woman is supposed to gain only 25-35 pounds during their pregnancy. To me, if you can’t lose that much in the 3 months or so after your pregnancy that you shouldn’t have sex in, then I don’t know what to tell you. If your ass is already overweight and you have trouble losing weight you should only gain 10 pounds.
Personally, I plan on working out throughout any pregnancy I have so that I won’t gain too much extraneous weight. I can’t imagine being so big…
Any ladies who have already been preggers: what is that like?
Zoso and Joy – I agree, I hate how hard it is for people in lower SES groups to live healthy lives. First there’s the issue of actual food prices due to the ridiculous way in which the gov’t subsidizes farmers mostly just for grains and meats (and the corn slop which is feed for the cattle and High Fructose Corn Syrup for us) whereas produce farmers get virtually nothing…keeping the price of fruits and veggies high and processed crap cheap. Then there are built environment issues…forget a Whole Foods, some neighborhoods don’t even have ANY grocery store, but they have a liquor store on every corner. And don’t even get me started on healthcare access, not having a freaking safe outdoor space for kids to play, or having no choice in your neighborhood becoming a site for industrial waste dumping.
Because of all these issues to overcome, this is why I REALLY get pissed off at all the lardass soccer moms who have access to top notch gyms and healthy food, but choose to roll their gas guzzlers to McDonald’s for dinner every other night.
Until a man has children and deals with post-birth weight loss issues, please do not come at me re: pre nup. And I’m talking about a man who was born a man.. not pics that have been floating around the internet of the trans-man who is now pregnant. I’ve never had kids, but I hear that it’s hard to lose the weight after having more than one.
Also, considering that women are always the focus on weight discussions, and that most many women are weight conscious (no matter what they actually weigh), it seems that men are more likely to gain that spare tire later in life. Men tend to have faster metabolism when they are young, perhaps because they play sports, perhaps it’s how they’re built, but they don’t gain that ass and thigh weight that women do. So they don’t really have to watch their weight. Then when they get older, that metabolism slows down, and they don’t know how to eat right because they have just been naturally thin. Woman, on the other hand, constantly work on their weight, so it’s not such a huge shocker that they can’t down chicken wings like its granola….
But I dunno. Maybe Chris’ Best Friend has some insight into it.
T.Head – 3months?! Naw, I think the recommendation is to wait 6 weeks, but really it’s whenever your body is ready. Yeah, I’m nowhere near even thinking about getting pregnant, but that’s the first piece of information I wanted to make sure I knew, LOL.
I’m totally against capital punishment…but I want to “excruciatingly” execute that raping, murdering fat fuck just on GP.
Breastfeeding helps with that weight.
Hey, I didn’t see that. 3 months is long time…
That fat bastard on death row: chop his fucking head off.
I agree with Obama. Only because I worry what some Black folks will do once the check is handed to them. I’m not sure how much money it would be, but Im a little too worried about people going out to spend their reparation check on rims, new clothes, cars and such. This is where I cannot stand the mentality of some Black folks, cause why shouldnt the goverment be able to cut us all a check. I’m sure many of us could use the money to pay off loans, invest or just save for a rainy day.
The reparations would do much better by going back into the community- really.
But I would laugh if they do decide to hand out reparations and all the people claiming that theyre not Black or mixed with this and that start coming in droves to get a piece of the pie.
In response to Riz’s link about Chris’ Best Friend:
“His attorneys say a drug he is taking for migraine headaches could affect the execution process. The drug Topamax, a type of seizure medication, may have created a resistance to thiopental, the drug used to put inmates to sleep before two other lethal drugs are administered, Dr. Mark Heath, a physician hired by the Ohio Public Defender’s Office, said in documents filed with the court.”
For some reason, the fact that this guy gets those migraine prescription drugs annoys me. I mean, there are law-abiding citizens who can’t afford prescriptions and go without but this overweight weasel is not only eating his way out of death, but probably has migraines in some part due to his fat existence. Another check in the dumb government box.
Wait wait…I’m wrong about the 3 months…I think. I know one of my friends waited three months…that might have been because she couldn’t stand her boyfriend and didn’t want to get pregnant again.
After rigorous research (I googled the subject and looked at three different sites) I have come to the conclusion that 6 weeks seems to be the standard since you have an appointment with your doctor to make sure everything is a-ok down there.
His argument is sure to get shot down. I’m sorry Mr. Rape and Kill two women, no one cares if you are going to suffer when you die.
Just for perspective…I’d like to add that some of the things we’ve spoken about are not restricted to the black community. Many white suburban families run around spending money on dumb things trying to keep up with the neighbors. We just look a lot worse cause we have a different style and alot more of us are renting.
Fat Bastard needs to go ahead and die. Migraine meds? His lawyer put him on that ish. I’m sure that he’s experienced worse pains in prison…. I didn’t even think that migraines really existed, until I had my first one when studying for the Bar. But… still, not enough for meds. And even I realized that it was stress-induced, not physiological.
On the flip side, if too many patients become resistant, then it might make states recall the drugs that they use for the death penalty… because those are TERRIBLE and don’t work.
Give him a Heath Ledger bolus…that should help him with the pain and kill his ass.
Am I wrong…or would a shot to the back of the head require less prep and be less cruel than electrocuting someone?
LOL at ya’ll!!!
Heath Ledger bonus!!
and Amadeo, I was thinking the same thing– they ain’t got no other way to kill Fat Bastard? Please.
I bet if he was Black, he wouldn’t have gotten migraine meds in the first place.
@ Riz, the starbucks guy is probably “really nice” or “has great potential” or is a fake ceo…. er future successful entrepreneur. Ha ha. Ya never know.
*Well, actually you kinda do.*
Knatural (18:44:02) :
FAT MAN SAMPLER:
(1) Do you often breath with your mouth open while sitting still?
(2) Do you use sugar, honey, or syrup on items that do not require sweetening, i.e. grits or fish?
(3) Do you require a mirror to see your long-lost penis?
(4) Do you require a mansserie?
(5) Do the jokes in Eddie Murphy’s Nutty Professor offend you?
(6) When dining at a buffet, do you ask for doggy bags?
If you answer “yes” to any of these, you’re fat.
so we add all the miscellaneous items ppl have added and this will be the fatman quiz
Oh yeah, he gave me a CD today. He has written a book about relationships and has a CD of his motivational speaking. I’m listening to it right now… He’s not *wrong”, but it kinda reminds me of Essence Magazine (i.e. depressing).
No tengo un novio gordo nunca jamas!!!
No offense, pero not my type. Me gusta athletic ones.
My girl dated a fat guy who was lazy. Had a fucking car but always wanted people to drive him around, and he never wanted to give up gas money.
off from work late as usual but co-signing w/ Tomatohead
“If someone were to give out reparations I would start from the bottom up; give money to elementary schools, have after school programs for kids so they can get help with their homework and have a sanctuary away from their shitty lives at home, have proper school lunches and breakfasts.”
But I would start even earlier with funding to Head Start. And lots of children definitely need sanctuary from their lives at home. I work with families, and I’ve see too many bright children hampered by dysfunctional parents. Some parents don’t see how dysfuctional they are and some just don’t give a damn even when they know they are.
Stop telling people healthy food is expensive! Organic food can be expensive. But if you hit the farmers markets you can stock up on fruits, vegetables, bread, cheese and such for very good prices. I generally spend no more than $50 at a farmers market. Yea, I know there aren’t farmers markets in the hood but if you have a car or if the nearest white neighborhood isn’t too far, hop on a bus. I always shop in the white neighborhoods for food, it’s better quality. Even better, if you have the $, shop for food in a Jewish neighborhood, that’s the best quality.
Are any of you guys mad at me? I feel like people are mad at me…
If it helps I’m not mad at you Chaotic.
I wanted to write a book on relationships, but I realized the guys that need it would never read it. The only way I could succeed is if I do consulting Hitch Style…lonely dudes with no game who only refer similar dudes.
I know I’m a little off…I keep seeing little creepy crawlers and stuff…but I know that nobody likes sick people and like ppl aren’t responding to my txts once I tell them I’m sick….so I figured I did soomething wrong.
Tea: “Stop telling people healthy food is expensive!”
But it issssssss! LOL! Go to McDonald’s and look what’s on the $1 meal, then check out the price of a salad. For many of us the price difference is something we’re able to absorb, but it’s a huge difference for a lot of people. And consider those who mostly get their food from food banks (not just homeless but a lot of working poor)…unfortunately that donated stuff isn’t always the healthiest (foods full of sodium and preservatives to make them non-perishable).
I feel you on the local farmer’s markets though. I think a lot of us need to start reinvesting in community businesses and markets. A lot of the price markup in supermarkets is due to shipping, and as the cost of oil doesn’t look like it’s coming down anytime soon…
Yeah, dude’s book is geared toward a female audience. Like I said, he’s not wrong. I even had a couple of “Preach!” moments. But…. much like the CNN special, he didn’t break any new ground, and didn’t provide solutions.
I think it would be fabulous if you wrote to a male audience. You are exactly the type of person who needs to put it out there. Not only are you the Clit Commander, but you also seem to have a real insight into the emotional needs of women (I had an “Awwwwww” moment when you mentioned going to a natural hair show with your girl).
You’re right that target men would not read a book. Those who did read it would be like preaching to the choir. But what about a column in a popular men’s magazine? With the popularity of this blog, and your blog, too, I’m sure that you could get a break…. Give your articles a catchy title, put enough chauvinistic stuff in there so men feel that you’re on their team, then slide in some real gems about relationships and/or DATING (for the singles out there)! Just a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down…
I could serve as one of your single female consultants/ correspondents as needed. I would do the silly stuff, like go on blind dates and give you feedback about what guys do wrong… or rock different hairstyles or clothing types to see how men respond… or go out and meet guys and use different identities (like a waitress instead of a lawyer)… things like that!
Random: Yall I just found out that $1 US= 4.63 Egyptian Pound.
I’m so happy! I would be fucked if I was going to London LOL.
I’ve been thinking of how to trick guys into getting interested in it…but I do have that Hitch standard…my techniques…must never be used for evil. That is they way to the darkside…and being on the next list of “do wrong brothers”.
We definitely need more male voices in the discussion about relationships. I’m not talking about immature guys talking about they want a skinny woman with big boobs. I’m talking about men in real, long-term relationships who understand the challenges of staying together and who are willing to share their experiences about money, chores, kids and in-laws — the kind of stuff that really makes/breaks relationships. Too many of us get our information only from Essence.
So maybe to solve americas pending health care crisis is we start kicking fat people out the country? Give everyone 2 years and after two years if you don reach certain level you are evicted to Sudan… I am sure they will lose weight… if you reach the correct levels you can come back. lol
Muse…can I borrow 2500 pounds…sista? LOL
@Tea-Its true, farmers markets are cheap, and the jewish markets have the best quality because nobody wants to piss off little old jewish ladies.
Back to the reparations, I dont think the government should give any reparations to individuals, I agree with above posts and obama that we should be funding schools and programs. Or we can give every black person the reparations the old reparations, which was 40 acres and a mule. I would pay good money to see a black guy in Montana pulling up to his 40 acres with a mule in the middle lmao. Land prices would plummit in all the midwestern states because black people would be selling that land so fast your head would spin and also because the govt would give the shittiest parcels of land in the midwestern states away. Its not like they are going to give 40 acres of prime los angeles land to some guy lmao. As chris rock has said, if the govt gave reparations, Cadilac would be the number 1 car in the world. The govt gave reparations to the japanese in the 80s because of the internment camps int he 40s, but its different because the govt didnt make slave owning mandatory 140 plus years ago, like they did when they put all those japanese in the camps in the 40s, there just wasnt a law banning it. Give money to schools and call it reparations, have a few more schools named after martin luther king, and rosa parks and that would be fine. I dont deserve reparations, I never had to pick one peice of cotton or call any white person “massa”. The jews didnt get reparations for our govt turning a blind eye on most of the holocaust, even though they were many years, and 6 million jews late to stop it. Its insulting how some people say they “deserve” reparations, I would first demand proof and documentation that they are decended from a slave, and provide factual evidence that why after 120 plus years there family couldnt become successful in america.
Don’t be fooled by my earlier posts…if they send me a check in the mail…I will cash it and end up working for myself. They way I feel they can never make up for it…but I will take their money as an attempt. I know what to do with it.
Re: relationships…I keep thinking that the Hitch method might work…when dudes look up and wonder why the “nice guys” who women would spit on before are walking around with a woman they couldn’t get that might be the draw.
@ Amadeo: Are you talking “techniques” or are you talking “knowledge?” Those are different. Any “Hitch” can get a girl to have sex with him, but can he be a good man? The kind that women brag about or long to be with? The first step is to tap into why a man should even act right. As so many comments here have suggested– a Black man lives in P*ssy R Us. He has no motivation to be the Marrying Kind because he can act a damn fool and still find some woman to put up with him….But is it the type of woman that is worth his while? Maybe your first step is to create the need for a Good Black Woman. Then proceed from there.
(and btw, the Hitch guy probably has better chances than you think. I dated a Hitch guy for 5 years, because I saw the goodness inside of him).
@Miracle: My family is indeed graduated from slaves, and I am the first law school graduate in 120 years. Does that make us finally successful? Does that change the fact that I owe [redacted] in law school loans? Or change the fact that I initially had trouble interviewing at large firms because I didn’t go sailing or play tennis? Or make it easier to raise my perfect Cosby family that I will probably never have? Please, don’t get it twisted. One Black president and one big firm salary does not even the playing field for modern Black people.
lol @ riz….no tengo no hombre con un pene chico nunca!!! Tengo mucho suertes eh?
..es bien…hablo “spanglish”, no espanol…lmao.
Also, remember that Hitch goes both ways. If Nice Guys finish last, then Smart Girls finish behind them.
Knowledge and techniques.
A nice guy who has some aloofness will get into the door quicker. You don’t have to be an ass…but hell it is like the movie. Teaching him how to let a woman get close enough to see him. Those dudes are quality but a quality most people don’t see on first glance.
@ C.Diva: hahahaha…
Hmm…necesito posible?
Even though I speak Spanish, isn’t it a tad bit pretentious to carry on a conversation in Spanish on a message board where everyone speaks English? LOL…
I’m just saying…
@ muse: babelfish.altavista.com.
I can read/comprehend it better than I can speak it. Trust, I’m half ass translating on my end.
Besides, we didn’t want to offend the males…
My goodness, please someone put me out of my misery.
Landon- With all due respect (I am holding up my thumb and pointer finger to indicate a smale amount), when people enter marriages with stupid shit like prenup clauses over weight gain, it speaks to….um…just being an unrealistic and pretenious, overinflated self worth having asshole.
No, it’s NOT wrong to expect that your woman maintains her health. But you aren’t talking about a clause that states that you can divorce her and not give her X amount of dollars because she gains too much weight. Think about what a disgusting FUCK you sound like saying that. Say she’s 5’6 and you say that if she hits 160 pounds, she’s outta there. What if she hangs at 159 pounds for 20 years? Will you consult one of your douchebag idiot collegues or fellow Whorehouse alums about what to do?
What if she gains the weight but you STILL LOVE HER? Will you leave automatically? What if YOU gain weight? Does it go both ways? Or, what if you lose your job and no longer earn a good salary? Surely, the sort of trophy idiot bitch who would sign such a prenup is expecting you to make a cerain amount of money to be coming in from you. Is she fair to leave if you go broke?
And what sort of message would you be sending your kids, especially your daughters, if you leave their mother and had a pre-nup like this?
You don’t keep a wife from getting fat by looming a divorce over her head. You do it by affirming her beauty, encouraging her to stay fit, making healthy choices for YOURSELF and working as a team to create a healthy and active culture for your family. And you start by mating with a woman who shares your committment to healthy living!
As for the article:
“I have said in the past — and I’ll repeat again — that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed,” the Illinois Democrat said recently.
“If we have a program, for example, of universal health care, that will disproportionately affect people of color, because they’re disproportionately uninsured,” Obama said. “If we’ve got an agenda that says every child in America should get — should be able to go to college, regardless of income, that will disproportionately affect people of color, because it’s oftentimes our children who can’t afford to go to college.”
This is the best we can hope for when it comes to reparations, anyway.
Talk about assholes and their prenups:
My eyes are burning. I’m gone.
Chaotic- OMG, that made me want to cry! But she knew he was crazy when he presented this….why did she marry him?
He must have done that shit after they got married….I hope…
I agree with Obama’s stance because if he was to even hint agreeing with to some aspects of reparations, then it will serve as fodder in fueling those critics for painting him only as the “black candidate” and therefore cannot be trusted to be elected to the presidency. Besides, there would be no way that the U.S. government would actually ensure that the spreading out of monies to blacks would really be fair (i.e. stipulations mentioned earlier about proving bloodline and how many hours worked, uh that’s fucking insulting right there) because the government will find a way to not do the right thing. In addition, money that can be used for “reparations” needs to be redirected to other avenues that will actually help black people ranging from health care to educational incentives and measures to attend college and trade schools to money management. By focusing on the problems that affect every single black neighborhood in the country will real solutions will began.
Health care-health coverage and regular routine checkups/prevention with emphasis on pre-screening for common afflictions in the black community (i.e. cardiovascular disease, diabetes) and choices/options/avenues for prevention/keeping in check those diseases
Education: get rid of all this craptacular focus on testing, testing, testing and more testing (i.e. No Child Left Behind Act). How in the hell do you expect students now to know anything when all the schools focus is on just teaching on how to take a test. I was exposed to that while growing up but it had not become ridiculous as it has now. Knowing the correct way to look up context clues in a narrowly defined passage will not help in college when you have to take real subject areas such as chemistry, biology, calculus, and classes in their majors. That’s why there is such a high rate of students having to take remedial classes because they did not get a real education while in middle and high school
Money management-biggest issue of the continuing cycle of poverty, not saving, in adequate preparation for retirement because of our lack of knowledge in how to correctly start saving money from the get-go (i.e. as a kid). Programs that teach money matters while kids are in school goes a long way in understanding that it is all about saving money ( I had programs like this while I was in middle school) and making money work for you, instead of spending on frivolous items (i.e. rims, clothing, cars).
What I have listed above is only a sample of ways to start addressing major problems in the black community that take much needed urgency then worrying about reparations. Instead of this back and forward as mentioned in the article posted about reparations, actually getting into getting the hands dirty and changing the mindset that we have is a start.
my home girl thinks that reparations is a bunch a bs that will hurt us more than help us
Do you feel obligated to help your less fortunate family members if you are well off financially? What if you have a cousin who stays broke and is always “borrowing” money or an aunt who just can’t seem to get it together. Is it okay to say no even if you have the means? What are your boundaries about money when it comes to family?”
When I was a child I thought it was a showing of solidarity and support for the family, but the older I got and I saw some of the shadiness of relatives when they used to ask my uncle and grandmother for money, really would piss me off. My uncle and grandmother were retired, in ill-health, raising me and I would see relatives come from nowhere asking to borrow money from them for whatever reasons, only to see them come back the very next month with their hand out asking for help. Especially when the relatives that would ask for money would always stay in some kind of drama, and the best part is when my uncle died a few years back, and how amazing those same relatives that would always come around being annoying just disappeared ( I guess the money well was gone and they already knew by looking at me they wouldn’t even get a dime out of me). In general my relatives really don’t bother me because they know I will give them one of my “looks” of I know you are full of shit so don’t even bother opening your mouth to me to ask me for money.
Thats not what i ment when i said successful, I mean when your life is better then that of your ancestors. When you move up a social class. Slaves sadly were at the bottom in the class system, but over 120 years, most of their decendents are not at the bottom of the class system. I just read a study that said at least 50% of African Americans are middle class, just middle class, not upper middle class, not lower middle class, not upper class, not poor, exactly in the middle, like most of america. Saying that, I would say that when you account for the lower middle class (which is still a couple classes up from the post-slavery class), the middle class, the upper middle class, and the upper class, a large majority of African Americans have pulled themselves up because of the American system, and are not owed reparations. Those people probably would rather have it go to schools to benefit everybody and not just them. The people who seem to demand reparations are the ones who never pulled themselves up, and would never share what they were given. I think our nation being liberal minded enough to have a black president, and people not being able to “blame the white man” when the man in charge is black, says alot about the black community moving away from using slavery as a means for financial gain. Im sure that even though you were the first person in your family to graduate from a law school (although i dont know if your the first person to graduate college in your family) you probably grew up in a middle class household, and even though you might have loans to payback, you will likely never be poor or lower middle class, or even middle class. Your degree and education can never be taken from you, your likely to move up a class, which proves my point that your family who started as slaves, throughout a short period of time were able to climb to status ladder, which in any other country would likely be impossible. Because of your achievements your children will probably have a higher expectation of themselves and would probably not even consider a state school for their post high school education, they would most likely only go to a private university. You nor your children should receive reparations because just for that fact that you are successful (maybe not financially at the moment, but mentally) and you can care for youself and your family proves that the america system works, and coming from nothing a family can grow. If you lived in Albania, the Congo, or any other country in the world whose citizens were not able to succeed and move up the ladder based on nothing but financial means, then sure get reparations, because you probably wont survive without it, would you get it there? hell no, but being in America where you can succeed just by a quality education, and sometimes even less, says wonders.
I lost you after , “… a large majority of African Americans have pulled themselves up because of the American system, and are not owed reparations. Those people probably would rather have it go to schools to benefit everybody and not just them.”
I . . . just . . . I . . .
If that’s how you feel than there is no reason for me to even try to explain how I feel because we are way too far apart ideologically.
But A for effort, “bro.” A for effort.
Welfare = reparations. It’ll do the same thing —- money should only be given to those who will use it wisely…but who is going to judge that?
It is not the answer!!! Did anyone else see that Dave Chappelle skit ‘when black people get their reparations” KFC will be the largest corp in the world, Sprint and Cadillac stock would triple… Welll at least I would know where to invest if it did happen!!!!
I’m curious to know what the men in this thread look like in a bathing suit. I’m pretty sure that maybe one or two of you have a six pack LOL. Maybe I should require that my husband has a six packs and nice toned physique LOL. I want my pre nup contract to say that if my man develops love handles before age 60 then I can take everything in a divorce.
Muse – in California, you can do that.
@Miracle – “large majority of African Americans have pulled themselves up because of the American system…” – African Americans have pulled themselves up despite the American system not because of it and not to mention that we helped build this country(not necessarily by choice), and success is attainable here because this country as a whole is very wealthy. That wealth was initially based on two things free land (stolen) and free labor (slavery).
“…black community moving away from using slavery as a means for financial gain.” – What financial gain have black people got from slavery???
@Zahara – “Welfare = reparations” – Sorry, that’s a lie… welfare had nothing to do with reparations; there were always poor people in this country it wasn’t until the Depression and some previously upper class people went broke that people starting feeling sorry for others, aristocracy anyone… Welfare isn’t and has never been a black thing, nor would reparations in any form be a constant never-ending stream of income like welfare.
The Youngest country doesn’t become the richest by sheer hard work….oh my bad that’s not true…it’s just hard work on the part of slaves who get nothing and have nothing to leave their descendants…if their descendants even know who they are.
🙂 awaiting post
BTW…Marriage contract dude is crazy.
Deathrow inmate too fat to die?
I think that marriage contract is where Landon found inspiration.
Marriage contract dude is a very generous fellow. He gives her 14 good behavior days credit for each time she gives him unexpected anal intercourse.
However, he wasn’t clear on whether or not she could wear panties to church. I’d say that omission makes the entire contract void for indefiniteness as to a material term.
Knat: that’s ridiculous. SMH.
Re: Marriage contract…is there a Good Behavior Day deduction if she spits instead of swallowing?
ahahahahahahhahahah I just skimmed that damn marriage contract…I’m gonna show it to my husband. I’m amazed at how specific he was!
Hmmm…I wonder why he didn’t include anything about his wife wearing the Princess Leia slave outfit?
Amadeo – you’re a freak, it’s confirmed.
Leia was looking kinda sexy though…
@ Muse – I have a six pack…so I guess that makes it okay for me to eat a 15 pc order of wings?!?!
BTW – Welfare is there to keep people dependent upon it. Most ppl don’t come off of the system, and it keeps them from making progress. If the govt wanted to reform it to help people transition off of it they would’ve done that a long time ago.
@ Knat…every dude in a certain age range has looked at a woman and imagined her in the Slave Leia outfit…anyone who comments here and hasn’t…will today.
@ b4prez…chicken wings sound so fucking delicious. I haven’t eated in days.
I agree with Senator Obama on the reparations issue. However, if the government wants to send me some money to say sorry, I’m not complaining. 🙂
Looks like Iraqi’s get reparations.
That said, only buy your gas from Arco. They do not get their oil from this region.
