Vince Carter

5 06 2008

For anyone that hasn’t heard about this, Vince Dumb-Fuck Carter donated (recently, I think) $2.5 million to his old high school in Daytona Beach to build a new athletic center.

Vince and other hyper-wealthy dumbass professional athletes all over the country just loooooooooove to give ridiculous sums of money to schools, usually predominantly black schools in shitty neighborhoods, which is a great thing. Unfortunately, they almost invariably funnel the money into athletics which is just about the most retarded and irresponsible thing I can think of*.

Figure 1: Moron

Athletes donating money to athletics is stupid for at least three reasons

1.) Athletic scholarships (typically) lead to people majoring in something useless. I’ve been cursing the black emphasis on high school athletics** for years, and always get the argument that athletics are the road to college scholarships. Ignoring the main macro-level flaw in this argument (the fact that even in college athletics, there aren’t anywhere near enough slots to accommodate all comers), I’ll offer this one up: way too many people going to colleges on athletic scholarships are majoring in useless shit: communications, psychology, english, etc. Once they graduate, they do virtually nothing with these degrees…except in some cases pile them on (there are some motherfuckers running around with THREE english degrees.) Personally, I’d rather my children had an associate’s degree in auto mechanics or HVAC repair than a four year sheepskin in communications***.

Aside: Useless Majors – Read this before you get indignant

My stance on these majors is complicated. I tend not to have a problem with these majors when they’re used as a stepping stone to, for example, a law degree or a graduate degree for someone to become a teacher or professor. I do have a problem when people use these majors to ‘find’ themselves or just coast through school, because I believe these are luxuries that, at the moment, only white people can afford.

Here’s a tip: if you don’t know what the fuck you want to do with your life, major in something useful like math or engineering or business just to hedge your bets, and pick up the useless-but-interesting shit like philosophy or african-american studies as a minor. That way when your lost and confused ass graduates, you’ll actually be taking a decent amount of money from white people that you can reinvest into your community. Be a producer, not a consumer, goddammit.

End Aside

2.) The most reliable studies show the odds of success of any person who wants to become a professional athlete at about 1 in 50,000. 49,999 out of 50,000 pro-athlete hopefuls, after having their dreams curb-stomped, are going to have to fall back on something else, and it for damn sure isn’t going to involve athletics.

Figure 2: Would you bet your livelihood on finding this needle?

3.) You don’t need expensive athletic centers to produce top-flight athletes. Extremely talented athletes are going to get good no matter what. You don’t need futuristic weight equipment and state of the art basketball courts – good old fashioned shitty dumbbells and barbells and old ragtag hardwood courts have been producing superstar athletes for decades. If the law of diminishing returns had a leg, it’d be kicking Vince Carter in the ass for the next ten years.

Listen well, black athletes – WE DON’T NEED HELP IN ATHLETICS, GODDAMMIT! Black people need ACADEMIC help. Donate the $2.5 million to teacher salaries to attract more talented instructors and reduce class sizes, or to buy new and updated textbooks, or to fund study abroad programs so black kids can see some of the world. Put the money into private tutoring or remedial education in impoverished neighborhoods. Pour the money into state of the art libraries or computer labs. Use it to set up an academic scholarship fund.

But the last damn thing we need is more athletic centers. It’ll have more and more black children chasing a proportionally shrinking number of slots in professional and college athletics, leaving them with nothing to fall back on when 99.998% of them fail.

Figure 3: We don’t need Globo Gym to be able to do this. The Slave Trade took care of that.

I’m sure there are some people thinking “but it’s Vince’s money! He can do whatever he wants with it!”

I disagree.

When you make $18 million a year in salary and endorsements to put a ball in a hoop, Karma insists that you have a responsibility to the greater good. Given how insanely lucky and blessed you are, you have an obligation to lift up others around you – and though it’s wishful thinking, I hope this obligation is one of the first things President Obama signs into law. Yes, it’s Vince’s money. Yes, it’s his to use as he pleases. Yes, he has the right to turn a blind eye toward or remain ignorant of the real issues facing black children.

But having the right to do something doesn’t make it the right thing to do.

Figure 4: I hate myself

*Except, of course, for the life-sized bronze statue of Vince Carter commissioned to be placed in front of the gym. It’s being paid for by Vince’s asshole of a mother, who is too much of a selfish bitch to put that money to better use for the greater good, like maybe a new science lab or library renovation.

**Notwithstanding it’s value as a tool for keeping kids, particularly boys, engaged at school (in an academic capacity or not) and off the fucking streets.

***These careers are not to be slept on, especially if the person going into them is ambitious and entrepreneurial. I have a cousin who owns a five bedroom house with a pool, tennis court and full-sized gym, a Viper, an immaculately restored Corvette from the 1950s, has three kids, and a wife who doesn’t work. My cousin is a plumber.

OK, I agree with you 100% on giving money to sports rather than academics.

BUT, you’re wrong about 4-year degrees in communications, psychology, English etc being useless. There’s plenty of jobs that just require a bachelors in something, anything, whatever. I’ve also seen a lot of jobs that prefer communications and English degrees. Besides, most employers care far more about your experience than they do your education.

Your blog is funny. But WOW you hit it on the head. I roll my eyes everytime I see that. Richard Seymour donated $50,000 (may have been more) to his alma mater here in SC to build a state of the art weight room, that a lot of people said the football team “desperately needed.” Meanwhile, none of thedamn students can pass the exit exam to graduate. (Keep in mind this test has like 8th grade math and reading comprehension)

People move OUT of that school district so thier children dont have to go there.

I think there is a difference b/n building a community center WITH a gym in it….and a computer lab and a place to get tutored, etc and a big ol pretty gym. A state of the art athletic center??? for high schoolers??? blah Read a book dummies.

Oh, I hadn’t read that far yet. However, I still disagree. I majored in journalism with a concentration in public relations.

“I tend not to have a problem with these majors when they’re used as a stepping stone to, for example, a law degree or a graduate degree for someone to become a teacher or professor. ”

Everyone doesn’t want to go to law school. Some people might actually want to be journalists or advertising execs. I think that’s not a fair call to just say it should be used as a stepping stone to doing something you think is more important.

Bailey, then Ill point you to the sentence

I do have a problem when people use these majors to ‘find’ themselves or just coast through school, because I believe these are luxuries that, at the moment, only white people can afford.

I dont think it meant it is just a stepping stone, just a useless major if you dont have any direction. A lot of the athletes at my school majored in this and retailing because there was little to no math and science required…at my school anyway.

I think that as a communicator and a blog writer, he didnt mean it like that.

Word…athletics, for most, is a pipe dream at best. I have a cousin, not much younger than myself, who decided when we were teenagers his future was going to be either in (a) basketball or (b) rap music. Said cousin did not bother to do well enough in school to actually get an athletic scholarship, though he had the skills. He dropped out of school, got a GED, and decided to focus on rap music full time. He hooked up with a rapper here and had marginal success…even appeared in a video with the rapper that was in rotation on BET (this was like ten years ago).
So where is he in 2008? Jobless (I think) with a sorry ass wife, 3 kids 6 and under, and depending on his mama for transportation. No trade, can’t keep a job, jail record, etc.

The moral of the story is, kids: READ A BOOK, READ A BOOK, READ A MU’FUGGIN BOOK!

Oh and @ plumbers and electricians…I was just telling one of my girls…don’t sleep on them…long as we use electricity and indoor plumbing…and folks think they are “too good” or “too smart” for these professions…the folks that actually had the brains to take up one of these trades will STAY making that cheddar!

Do they still make those condoms? If so, why? I love when rich people do silly things, like purchase ridiculously expensive ugly clothes or donate monies to athletics. Athletes don’t need money. Nerds need money. It’s okay that he donated 2.5M to his school gym, but he also should’ve donated 2.5M to the school labs, or IB program, or field trip fund, something nerdworthy.

i went to a liberal arts, womens college. most of the students majored in edcuation, and a very small number of us got degrees in math and science. taking up some 20% of space and time were Liberal Arts, Communications, and History majors. every girl i knew that majored in these wastes of time were big partiers. a couple of them just picked up the Lib Arts degree, which is the equivalent of a high school diploma only you paid out the ass to earn it, cause they weren’t sure what they wanted to do. needless to say, they all have shitty, dead end jobs.

I have to say I agree with you to a point. I agree athletes should give to educational programs but I don’t believe everyone should judge their success based on their paycheck, as many of your blogs indicate you do. I am not saying that as a put down, I enjoy your blogs and think you are a smart person who loves what he does and writes much better and more creatively then I ever could. The problem is some people don’t like those majors. I am a comm major and I liked communications, I like public relations and even though I am one of those using it as a stepping stone into Law I don’t think its fair to bag on those who don’t.

Some people are either not good at or just plain don’t like a lot of those majors you listed. Maybe someone doesn’t want to site and write code or get calls at 4 am to come into work, my father did that and I hated it. I know plenty of professionals making a bunch of money but are stressed and hate their jobs. Especially engineers who would rather be doing anything then working 60 hours a week. I don’t mind starting at 30k and maybe only making 70k in my lifetime but thats me and I don’t like flashy things.

Meh to each his own, black folks need to do better of course but I won’t bag on a psych or comm major because maybe they are doing what they like to do.

Keep it up, love the blog.

Chris,

I agree that we don’t need anymore ‘state of the art’ weight rooms/gyms. Far too many urban schools have libraries and media centers with outdated materials and too little funds to do anything about it. The same can be said for the music and arts programs. Students that read music and take part in their schools music program(brass, percussion and string) usually have better grades in math than those who don’t. Most schools would love to receive a ‘state of the art’ anything dealing with music.

I can dig it man… its like every other day I hear about to new gym for kids….rolls eyes..I asked my 15 yr old cousoin what he wanted to do when he grew up he said I want to be a pro football player. I was like ok well are you going to go to college. He said these exact words ” What do I need to go to school for to play football”? SMH I wanted to go upside his mama’s/my aunt’s head who i hate anyways lol. Like these damn boy think that they can sail through school with no worries except when the college scouts come to the games. its sad its really sad…so im majoring in Journalism..still finding myself but i know what i want to do thought hahah..not only will I be well known author but the owner of a porn company and co-host on my husbands radio show on SIrus…. there are in the works right now 🙂

How did this get turned into a forum about comm majors?

I think its funny that apparently the communications majors did not READ nor ANALYZE what was written. He wasnt baggin on people who didnt become attorneys etc, after majoring in communications. My perception was that he is annoyed at people who use the major because it appears to be easy. He also mentioned english, psychology. The same could be said of african-american studies, retailing, hotel & tourism, etc.

The majors are not useless IF and ONLY IF you have a very specific plan and goal. You cant just float around in them. Or after 4/5 years, you will have a degree and no good, fulfilling jobs no matter how you measure the success, by money, making a difference, whatever… And what is the point of going to school if not to becoming gainfully employed?

It looks like some people got defensive and totally missed the entire point of the blog which was to rag on stupid athletes. NOT communications majors. He didnt even single out communications majors.

You all can play that role but each and every one of you knows at least 50 people in majors that wont do them ANY good when they get out in the real world. Why are you majoring in AFrican-American studeis if you dont want to be a professor?? What you gonna use that degree for?? Why are there psych majors who dont want to be psychologists? Why are there communications majors who can hardly talk? Cause they didnt know what to do after high school and chose college or college athletics and HAD to pick a major.

Can we PLEASE talk about funny athletes or something else?

I didn’t miss the point of the post. Athletes are dumb, which is why they continue to give large sums of money for athletic centers in inner city schools. I think Vince Carter made a wrong choice, he needs to get his priorities right but this world rewards stuff like Athletics and being celebrated.

But I disagree that philosophy and psychology have no value, because they shape the world we live in. Having said that I read both subjects all the time now but I query what i was taught in college but there I was deceived. Most of what we learn in college is exoteric information and the esoteric is hidden away.

any degree can be useful if you use it the right way. you don’t necessarily have to be on a b-line to a career to make sense of a major in that field. if you don’t know what you want to do just be willing to branch out and keep an open mind. study what you like and many times that can LEAD to you finding a very fruitful career.

I got the point that a lot of people do use these majors to cruise through and not do anything else. Like Bailey Blue said its fucking up for people who actually liked the major and now have to deal with it being labeled as an “Easy” major. So we try to defend it from our point of view, but you are right this is a place to make fun of athletes and I am sure all the things I said the original poster already knew.

When it comes to a lot of athletes, well football players and basketball players, why do they have to be so damned dumb? Baseball, Cross Country, Soccer…etc all have practice, all have to work hard but they get straight A’s and do well since high school. I don’t mind black folks playing sports what I do wonder is why predominately black sports are never pushed to make themselves better.

@ thechad RE: Oprah

I get real upset when people say stuff like this. Here’s the difference. In the U.S., education is FREE. Anybody can go to school for 13 years FOR FREE. In South Africa (and a lot of other places in the world), this is not the case. If you don’t have money, you don’t get an education, and your ability to pull yourself up out of poverty is greatly diminshed.

You may say that the “quality” of these FREE schools in the states leave something to be desired. You may be right. But I say that FREE old books are better than no books at all. As for your statement that, “duh! they’re kids of course they are gonna say that,” I call Bull$hit. Have you SEEN how greatful those damn kids in South Africa are for the chance to have an education? They come from miles around and make great sacrifices for it. I taught at an orphanage in Ghana for several months. No Money. No books. No computers. Just me, and a classroom full of kids that wanted nothing more than to learn. If I went on a Monday and we did math and used one side of a sheet of paper – when I came back on Wednesday, they had that SAME sheet of paper waiting, ready to work on the other side of it. The problem with U.S. schools is not lack of funding (we should pay teachers more though). The problem is the attitudes of the kids (and their parents) that take an education for granted.

Michael,

Let me clarify. My philosophy regarding black empowerment involves as many of us as possible making as much money as (legally and morally acceptably) possible. Me praising high salaries isn’t about prestige or chest beating, per se – it’s about power. Black people with money can reinvest that money in the black community to various ends, and the more money we have to do this, the better. We have a lot of ground to cover in this respect, and black people with a bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D in English or Philosophy aren’t helping.

True, the ‘productive’ majors aren’t appealing to everyone, but don’t forget what I said defines a ‘useless major’ – people who pursue soft fields to ‘find themselves’, or to have an easy time in college, or to become the next Socrates. Most people who major in these fields with these attitudes in mind wind up in miserable, dead end jobs and stay there indefinitely.

So really, what’s worse? Trying your hand at business or engineering, having a hard time for four years in college, but ending up with countless options and a relatively easy life when you graduate…or having fun for four years, then being miserable for the rest of your life?

I was a Computer Science major in college and it was the most god-awful 3.5 years of my life. I worked like a Hebrew slave while everyone who wasn’t either an engineering major or pre-med partied their asses off the whole time. I actually HATED my major until my sixth semester. The upside for me, though, is that today my best days are ahead of me while the people that fucked around in college have already seen theirs.

I can understand the motivations behind adopting a useless major…but to me, there’s nothing scarier than the idea going into college knowing that the next four years will be the best I’ll ever have, which for most people is pretty much the fate that a useless major dooms you to.

5 06 2008

Oh, yeah, I was hella mad at Oprah for that one. Not for her building a school in Africa, but for NOT building one in the U.S. I know, I know, she can never do enough for some people but it’s not about that (I even argue that sometimes). It’s about that ignorant comment she made in her defense. She never tapped into the REASON behind why the kids didn’t want a new school. And it all ties back to “athletics” being the primary option for black kids. It’s not about what the kids want, it’s what they need. Building a school here or SOMETHING academic in nature could’ve been ONE part of breaking this tired ass “Us Black Folks Love Us Some Athletics. Academics who?” cycle.

you know, i think Oprah built that school in South Africa because it was a way to provide a facility for learning in an area where education for girls is a real priority. not to say education here isnt a priority, but education, for the most part, is widely available. this says very little about the quality here in the US, but at least there are options here. i remember having a choice of attending 3-5 jr. high schools here in DC. i don’t think the same can be said over in South Africa.

besides, there would be way too much red tape in doing something like that in the US. there is way too much politics that come in to play when it comes to our educational system. we should work on that first.

@ the Oprah Comment

I believe there is a huge difference between Africa and America.

Black people in America, sorry if I offend anyone, can apply themselves and make it. It’s not hard and it takes hard work but its easily made available.

Black people in Africa, work as hard as you want and there is a good chance you will never be successful.

I would build a school in Africa as well if I was her. I would promote better living in black people in the US, even though I doubt that would actually help.

Failure in the US, I believe, is due to years of being told you are a worthless person to the point you believe it and pass it down to your kids in a never ending cycle that needs to be broken.

Permit me to comment on the communications major thing one last time (to Esquire’s chagrin, lol).

I went to Maryland. There was a school of communications (within the arts and humanities college, I believe), and a college of journalism. I was a graduate of the latter, so I draw a distinction between a journalism major and a communications major. Communications majors at Maryland learned everything about the art of communication. They could not take classes in the college of journalism, because it was a limited enrollment program. Anyone could take a communications course, and, in fact, most folks did. There were different tracks, four, I believe, one of them including public relations, which doesn’t really require much journalism training. Though, a lot of folks who graduated with me now work at huge PR firms. Go fig.

On the athletes giving back to their schools thing: my high school (Bishop McNamara) is apparently the alma mater of some no-name (former?) professional athlete, who decided it would be a good idea to pay for a new football field. Granted, the field was bald in some places, but it was passable. Now McNamara’s suck-ass football team plays on turf – like, professional-grade turf, with a big mustang at the 50 yard line. Why? I don’t even know if DeMatha (a good WCAC football team) has turf on their field.

Chris – where the hell were you when I was in undergrad? I majored in psychology, and all you can do is babysit for $12/hr with a BA so I went to get a master’s and realized that I am physically afraid of crazy people. One-schizophrenic-threatening-to-kill-his-landlord later, I went back to school for an master’s in HR so I can finally make some damn money . . . And my psychology majoring buddies now do hair, own a car wash, babysit and – no joke – sell drugs. . .
Well, at least I never aspired to be in the WNBA. . .

Everything Chris said about money and power is what my mother said to me before I went off to college, where I majored in Theatre. And I should probably just kill myself, honestly.

Anyway, co-sign 100X. I hate the emphasis Black people put on atheltics and athletes. You forgot to mention the jocks that actually major in “Basketball”, albeit they give it some fancier name like “Physical Education with a Concentration in Affirming Black Stereotypes” or something. And even the ones with legitimate majors, if they are at a Big Ten school or somewhere where the alumni vestment in sports is crazy, have some school-issued simp to do the work for them. They don’t even have to find their own hoes. The school finds the hoes for them. They learn NOTHING and then end up fucked when they don’t get into the league.

WHAT IN THE FUCK is a high school gonna do with a 2.5 million dollar gym? I am all set for burning that sucker down.

Exactly. That was my entire point. That it needs to be broken.

My post up there was not to down her for building a school in Africa (in fact I explicitly said that), I actually encourage it. But what’s with the pick and choose? She can’t do both? She didn’t choose between a school in Africa and giving away her favorite things for years. She was able to do both. I’m also not saying she’s the only one responsible, gotta make that clear. It was her comment. I’m not down with making sweeping comments about kids in America and being in a HUGE position to do something about it…and not doing anything about it. I love Oprah and all that the woman has done (for herself, us, and the disadvantaged), but doesn’t mean I’m gonna — by default — agree with that comment she made in her defense. That wasn’t a defense to me, that was just a way of allowing the cycle to continue.

I want to go jump out the window…LOL

I’m was a Biology major (I went into college with the right idea) turned Communication/Public Relations Major. My idea was to go to Law School, but my undergrad student loan situation would not allow it. So, that was put on hold for a few years. Though I didn’t party as much as those around me, since I worked all 4 years, coached high school sports (for all those who seem to hate athletics), was an athlete at my university, and was involved in university organizations. I would have to agree that I’m not loving my post-graduation years. I’m so sad…..

I agree with the blog, I knew out of shape beer belly having brothers that had the audacity of being P.E. majors. Bottom line a dude with a bachelors in Sociology can’t do anything that a competent high school graduate can’t do.

My high school gym(Oxon Hill HS in MD) was shitty it had holes in the roof big enough for birds to fly in. We were the only people to have rain delays for basketball games, but we won the state championship in 2000, we sent one guy to the NBA, another played in the final four and two play pro overseas.

5 06 2008
the champ

Eh. While I agree that our community spends a disproportionate amount of energy towards athletics, I do think that people tend to minimize the positive effects athletics can have on a school and a community. From a state championship football team bringing the community together and giving them more of a sense of pride to the fact that being on a team helps to instill and cultivate work ethics as well as values such a teamwork and accountibility, sports do much more good than we tend to give them credit for.

I wont even get into the fact that many of the colleges and universities that people reading this comment attended were able to sustain and increase their revenue and endowments as a direct result of athletics, which directly resulted in better academic facilities on campus, being able to offer competitive salaries for professors, and other shit that cats thumbing their noses at athletes directly benefited from.

And, also, since when did encouraging kids to pursue an athletic scholarship become a bad thing? I don’t know about the rest of you, but my parents didn’t have $150,000 laying around to foot the bill for my college education, and, from what I’ve been told, paying off college loans can be a bitch.

Of course you have a few who are only in school because the have to be and are still stuck on the NFL/NBA pipedream, but the vast majority of college athletes were cats like me, who knew that there was a life after sports and used that free education to prepare for it.

@Esquire, I don’t think you read MY response. Using a bachelors degree to go to grad school is great but you can do just fine with only a bachelors in liberal arts too. And for the record, I have a bachelors in fine arts–not even liberal arts–and people made the same stupid comments to me about how I would end up as an over-educated barista or bartender after graduation. I got a “real job” only a few months after graduating. A lot of employers are far more impressed with someone who studied what interested them instead of what would get them cash.

5 06 2008

I agree completely. Athletes really need to have a better understanding of what’s necessary for our community. Difficult roads to take like sports and entertainment don’t need to be fed with millions when a lot of these kids CAN’T READ. What’s the use of a state-of-the-art gym when the school has outdated books and rickety facilities and equipment?

As far as English being a useless major, I see what you’re saying. I won’t be one of them though. I’m gonna high-tail it to grad school pick up a journalism degree. If that doesn’t work, I’ll go into accounting. Most of the English majors I knew in college were actually applying themselves and not BSing.

“. Kids aren’t stupid. They can distinguish nice facilities from shitty ones. Sometimes a school that cuts corners (such as by letting its students work out in old, timeworn gyms full of hygiene and safety hazards) does so at the expense of its students’ morale and feelings of self-worth.”

While this isnt a bad point and I believe that the self-esteem of these kids is very very important…you dont need a multi-million dollar gym to ensure that self-esteem is built up and nurtured. Kids have to learn that its what you put in to something..not how shiny and nice the surroundings are ( though I am not saying its not nice to have nice surroundings and facilities to use). I had the opportunity to travel abroad a couple of times in school and my first trips were to Ethiopia and Nigeria. The Nigeria trip was an amazing experience in terms of what I got the chance to see…kids going to schools that didnt have electriticy, running water, update textbooks….but they were kicking ass on their exams…and those that come to the US continue to kick ass because they learned you have to do what you have to do …regardless. It made me appreciate my school and stop complaining so much because it could always be worse

I have a degree in biology (pre-med with a chem minor). There was NO way I was majoring in anything else, since I’m a science nerd (who happens to know a lot about other areas too) and I like a challenge. My initial goal was to become a doctor. Between my junior and senior years, I decided that medicine was NOT my calling…but the Biology might very well come in handy as a TEACHER. Seeing the bad ass kids in schools these years squashed that.
Anywhoo, after working like a Hebrew slave as well for four years in college, I got a job in a field completely unrelated to my degree, pledged it out for a few years, and then got a BETTER job in the same field, with way more cushy benefits. I got my current job (no lie) partially because of my BIO degree…my manager’s son is pre-med right now, so she correlated the biology with me being smart. I’m also halfway through a Masters in HR Mgmt program.
So…those folks who did Comm, English, or anything in the Arts (I’m sorry, but I used to laugh at ART majors)…if your degree directly relates to your career aspiration/development…excellent. Do what you do and work it out.
But if you’re an athlete (or anyone else) who uses one of these majors just you can cake through school and say “I have a degree”…and you end up working at *insert $10/hr job here*…that’s just lame. You’re not only wasting time, you’re wasting TAXPAYER money if you’re using grants, loans, etc.

5 06 2008

Encouraging kids to pursue an athletic scholarship isn’t a bad thing (I don’t even think Chris was saying that), it’s the idea that it’s the ONLY way to get into college (outside of the Army, which is a whole ‘nother issue) or to obtain a career…that’s the bad part. EVERYbody and their mama wanna be ball players or rapper or other stuff that is risky as hell and don’t have anything to fall back on. It’s the “I’m gonna be a ball playa” trend that kids focus on WITHOUT focusing on academics that’s the problem. Even when you become a baller, you gotta know where your money is going and how to manage it (yeah, even if you’re paying someone else to do it). And as they always say, when that knee goes out, there goes that multi-million dollar contract. Then what?

I feel ya, champ, there are cats like you out there. The point is, there are TOO many Black kids falling back on the NBA pipedream not because they fell in love with it so much, but because it’s some damn trend.

Reminding me that as a Black person, my value is highest if I have a ball in my hand?

Where are the elders, where are the people with sense AND power to tell this good “Look, we are so honored you would do this for us. But can we just give the gym a basic rehab and use that money on some of the stuff we need to help our children learn?” If I made $37K a year teaching at a high school that had a $2.5 million dollar gym, I’d probably quit immediately.

ST- you are so on point with the basketball players majoring in basketball, having a tutor do all their work, and not finding their own jersey chasers.

I went to a Big 12 school, and was friends with many of the guys on the basketball team. Now, that shit was col when I was 18 because I really thought I was dope rollin with these dudes. Then I learned how incredibly stupid they were. Athletes at KU major in HSES(health, sports, exercise bullshit), and I can tell you from having witnesed this first hand, they surely do have tutors who do all their homework. The jersey chasing girls are brought to these boys, and everyone turns a blind eye to the fact that these fools have the comprehension of a child on the off chance that they will be able to know a baller in the NBA.

These fools just met the president and I can tell you that a handful, if even that, are actually registered to vote. Trust that they’re all steady trying to enter the draft at some point. 4 years and a school later(I transferred because while KU is a great school, I was sick of the ridiculous amount of special treatment the athletes got, especially knowing their personal lives), I’ve got 3 friends in the NBA, 2 entering the draft this year, and countless ones who thought they’d become pros, but instead play for whack ass bottom leagues holding onto their college glory days. And I’m not impressed with a single one of them. I do have on friend who played ball all 4 years and now is in med school. The only difference between he and the rest…he’s white, and that makes me mad because the guys sure side eyed him like “why is this dude majoring in some real shit?”. I suppose the lure of fame and millions of dollars from playing a sport with limited spots available is greater than having a substanial career in something else. Maybe if I’d went to college on an athletic scholarship, was getting a big ass stipend monthly, plus the giant amount of money at the end of my 4 years, I’d understand.

2.5 mil should go to whoever the person who made the 2.5 mil decides it should go. It’s mighty presumptuous to tell someone what to do with the money they’re giving away, whether its 2.5 mil or the 25 bucks I gave my nephew last weekend.

Chris,

Sometimes I wonder if you are my long lost brother because the stuff you say is exactly what my family vents about around the dinner table. My father is a teacher (he used to be a stock broker for 15 years then decided to give back in another way.) and he gets indignant about how the Black community invests more in athletics than in academics. Sadly so many young black men use athletics thinking that they will end up making Kobe money when the reality is that there are likely not good enough to make it pro and even if they do go pro, the career of a pro athlete lasts an average of 2 years.

When I was a student at USC (The school in Cali for those assholes out there) I use to tutor the football players in math and English. Sadly these fools like Reggie Bush could only read at a 3rd or 4th grade level. Although USC required their student-athletes to participate in study sessions 10 hrs a week, most of these guys didn’t care about getting the degree. They majored in bullshit like Sociology or Communication and still struggled in their classes. Their mind was focused on going pro instead of utilizes USC’s great resources and getting a fantastic education. Sadly a lot of these young men stayed at USC for 6 years and when they didn’t get drafted often times many of them ended up leaving without a degree and working at the post office or some service job living a mediocre existence.

Personally I have no problems with individuals using their athletic ability to get into college. In fact I’m all for getting free money anyway you can but as adults have a responsibility to teach our young men that they need to get their degrees because the chances of going pro are VERY small. In fact the person has a better chance of winning the lottery than getting drafted.

This hits home with me because of how constantly I hear about the failing school system in DC public schools.

“…to become the next Socrates.”:

HAHAHAHA. Having gone to the same school as Chris, I can attest to the weed-out nature of finding a major. I knew some people who majored in engineering; they were also partiers. Needless to say, I graduated in ’07 (on time) and they’re still there.

I was a journalism major at one of the most challenging programs in the country. I became a J major because I love to write and want to pursue journalism as a career. Unlike in other schools, comm. and journalism are separate schools at the university… And for good reason.

Once you get in the university, you have to take an entrance test before you can even declare journalism as your major. Many students, disenchanted with the idea of another challenge, become comm majors. This is not to say that comm majors are slackers (because I am friends with a few who are MOST CERTAINLY on the grind), but talking to people at school was crazy:

“Damn, you’re in the journalism school?”
“Yeah.”
“You had to take that hard-ass test, didn’t you?”
“I mean, it wasn’t so bad.”
“Nah, man. That’s why I’m a comm major”
“What track are you on?”
“Rhethoric.”
“So…what are you studying?”
“I don’t know.”

Great. Hope you arent’ paying out of state tution.

I was also an African American studies minor. I think that was something I did for myself. I really like sociology, too, but too many of those classes make me wanna slit my wrists.

And I’d like to co-sign on everything ST and Cheekie posted. I 100% understand that in college, athletics definitely does bring in revenue. Anyone who has ever been to the University of Kansas campus will be able to see that in the Field House, rec center, and they’re currently adding to football stadium as well. I think the point was not to down athletics, but to make aware that it seems ridiculous to essentially only give one option to being successful. And really, 2.5 million on a hs gym??? Maybe because in hs, sports was secondary to learning, so a gym like that wouldn’t benefit myself. It’s disheartening when young, black kids think the only thing they’ll be able to do is play sports because it seems as though sports is the be all, end all versus an avenue to something else. For every dumb jock I know, I know an equally talented teammate of his/hers that will quickly say baskebtall/football/whatever is paying for me to get a dope ass education. Let’s also not unfairly stereotype all athletes. I’ve witnessed (ironically, from AASD) that when these young man men are forced to apply themselves – teachers who won’t sign off or adjust poor grades, instructors who are seemingly unmerciful in their insistance to make the 300lbs man in the back participate – you can tell they’ve earned the respect of the athlete, and make them want to do better. Unfortunately, the NCAA doesn’t give a shit – the athletes are their bread and butter for about 8 semesters a piece, utilizing their names and images for promotions, and the athletes see nada. It’s modern day enslavement of the Big Black Buck and all his physical prowess, as whitey buys season passes to watch these darkies and their paltry displays of “manhood.”

If we in the community vilify them all as “stupid” we are creating a self-fulfilling prophecy in the same way that the depiction of adolescent boys as having a propensity for criminal behavior keeps our jailhouses full.

And re: Oprah.

I think she has self-hate issues. She’s constantly demonizing “urban” communities on her show. With all the evident of dilapidated conditions in inner-city schools, she flew to fucking South Africa and made sure the school had a damn theatre in it?! Unnecessary. Self-serving. Overwhelmingly commodified.

She alleges that South African children would it appreciate the school more, which in some respects, may be true. But let’s not let the anecdotes about indifferent school children make us completely blind to the fact that there are black kids in the this country that like to learn, and want to learn, and more importantly – need to.

Chris does have some good points about unless majors. However dumb people who are too lazy to challenge themselves give the so called easy majors a bad name. One of my friends was in the USC’s school of communications Journalism program which was very challenging and competitive to get in. Now she’s a producer on MSNBC. She applied her degree and is successful.

I don’t have a problem with people having certain majors if they plan on using it. I was an International Relations/Econ and political science major because I thought I was going to go to law school. I ended up deferring and worked at the United Nations in Geneva Switzerland for several months. It was a great experience and I ended up getting interested in finance because I worked closely with the World Trade Organization. When I came back to the US I ended up working finance.

I saw where the money was and I ended up enjoying myself which has allowed me to take my career to another level. If I could go back I would probably major in a science or engineering because now I want to go into Venture Capital after my MBA but I will have a difficult time breaking into that industry because VC firms want people with technical along with business backgrounds.

From my experience in the workforce, employers do value individuals who majored in subjects that those skills can be applied to the real world over the theoretical majors. No offense and I can even clown myself on this: political science is utterly useless even if you do go into law. I added political science because I found government and theory interesting but at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter. We were all on an island, the poly sci, sociology, and communications person would be killed first LOL.

I didn’t get anything twisted. There’s an easily perceptible undercurrent of animosity towards athletes in many of the comments today, and many folks have said that he was wrong, in many very colorful ways.

Plus, giving money to a gym doesn’t immediately suggest that someone doesn’t value education. They’re not mutually exclusive.

“When you make $18 million a year in salary and endorsements to put a ball in a hoop, Karma insists that you have a responsibility to the greater good.”

i agree 100% on this topic…the boston globe did a story about 2 weeks ago where they basically said parents need to get real with their kids in middle school and have these kids start thinking about real careers so they can live and survive in this world…one of the kids the globe talked to wanted to be an actress and her mother got real with her and told her she needed to pick a career so she wouldn’t be struggling later on in life…so the kid is now on the nurse path…

i know that sounds cold, but this is a cruel world and we need to set the right expectations for our kids…and it starts young…i equate this with athletics…yes it provides great scholarships and keeps kids busy, but the reality is most will never, ever make it in sports…why not let kids know there are many other opportunities besides bouncing a ball…

One does not have to be a superficial prick to understand the value and have an appreciation for money. Working in finance has shown me what money can do and how the White people make more of it. I’m also willing to work long hours and bleed a little to make an enormous amount of money and learn the game so I can work for myself and down the line I can part take in such luxuries as having philosophical discussions or get a PhD in some bullshit like cooking just because I can. Black folks need to get real and learn about money, stop buying items that depreciate like rims, weaves, and other nigga items that are completely useless.

“i know that sounds cold, but this is a cruel world and we need to set the right expectations for our kids”

Just playing devil’s advocate b/c I do agree w/ the post and many of your points.
So, what do we tell the kids who dream and fantasize about being the policeman, fireman, doctor and ball player? Are we basically telling our 4 or 5 year old that dreaming is pointless and that they need to get real.

For me, I tell my high school kids, you need to have a game plan A and plan B. I think many of these black kids just have a plan A (a poor plan A) at that. These kids dream to be the next Vince Carter and try their best to achieve it but they never consider what happens if that does work out. I think we need to tell our kids…
1. Have that Plan A
2. Ask them to explain how they plan to accomplish that primary career goal
3. Breakdown the odds that it will take to actually break the field (particular if they want to be the next SUPERSTAR)
4. Explain to them that they need a Plan B just in case.

They will feel in control on their life but at the same time, they will be prepared if that plan A does not work.

My cousin is a plumber….

Now as a finish my Mass Comm Degree…. I feel I made a mistake.

Even though I’ve been riding with Vince since he was at NC, I have to agree that this was not the best idea. The worst part is that he is truly one of the more well-spoken, likeable, seemingly intelligent athletes out there. Remember when the league treated him like hot garbage for going to his graduation?

As for the notion of what’s an acceptable major, I think it’s really all crap. Due to the current (and past) state of the mass AA community, there’s this undeniable pressure (and need) to get it together and “catch up”. This leads so many blacks, especially 1st generation college students, to choose majors based wholly on salary, or stability. While these are important factors, I know many EX engineers, lawyers, computer scientists, and “english, because I’m going to law school” majors, because they were completely unhappy with what they were doing.

When it comes to “elite” blacks, there’s not even a question because what’s acceptable as a major has all ready been laid out for you, and when it comes to 1st generation students, there’s the pressure to “get mama and the family out of the ‘hood”.

I guess the point is that in the midst of our comeuppance, many are quick to put ppl and their ideas in boxes, w/o even realizing that they’re often in their own.

FREAKING EXACTLYYYYYYYYY!!! on point ace! This is what my mother did for me and I plan to do the same for my children. When I was 9 yrs old I wanted to be singer. And my mom sat me down yes at 9yrs old and told the odds of my being discovered and that if I truly want to be a singer i need to do this this and this…after i figured out that i hated singing when i turned 10 thats when i found the world of writing ever since then I haven’t stopped wanting to be a writer.

Shoot…I wanted to be an actress and singer growing up. I saw for MYSELF, though, how many folks wanted the same damn thing, and how hard it would be for me as a BLACK woman to do the types of roles I wanted. Not only that, but I didn’t like the thought of possibly being BROKE for years and years and years. So I got real and figured, Hmm, let me reorder this shit…first get the paper, THEN indulge your fantasy.

mmhmmm..well its totally different in my family.. i coe from a long line of college graduates with PhD’s, MBA’s and such…so its even more pressure on us the grandchildren to go to college or join the military becaus eif you dont you aint about shit. And you had to get in to a good school and its a plus if its one of the school that another family memeber went to which was limited to Maryland, Howard, Spelman, Morehouse, and USC ahh!

thank god i was excepted in to Maryland as a transfer student because i was seriously dead to my fam(not including my parents of course) for going to UNF…put I almost went to Spelman though if they gave me a full scholarship than a partial..my parents are stingy when it comes to money…

They don’t have nothing mild sauce like in BK, so far as I can tell, exceptin’ the BBQ sauce at this veggie spot called Red Bamboo. They don’t get the importance of sweet and spicy sauces like we do. I went to Ruthies Soul Food last week and asked for bbq on my whiting. Do you know they put smothering gravy on there? I was HOT!

I agree that 2.5 mil on a gym is dumb, majoring in a major that won’t make you employable is dumb and that black folks need to work harder at getting themselves together is OH SO TRUE (Love the Read a book song quote from the top!). However, I disagree that wealth and power are the keys to success for Black folks in america.

Black people need to have self-respect, virtue and integrity. Back in the day education or no education, money or no money…we still carried ourselves with dignity (and were happier for it!). Our children were not in public acting a fool (regardless of whether they could read or not). Once we have increased our valuation of each other and ourselves then education and other signs of progress will follow. Until then, things will only continue to spiral downhill…

Do what makes YOU happy. Engineering is not everyones cup of tea, it’s not the end all & be all to college education CLEARLY..as there are many successful people in other fields who are capable and do give back to the community. I agree 100% with this post!

Just a quick note: I majored in journalism with a concentration in public relations at UMCP. No this wasn’t my ideal major but after spending 7 years in super senior hell and not realizing what I really wanted to major in (health education) until the very last minute and being informed that it would’ve added another 2 years to my majorthere (hell no, not doing that!), I decided to major in PR, mistakenly assuming that it would be an easy major. I finally graduated and came away realizing that PR is not the easy major that it’s perceived to be and PR is a valid and well-needed service in our media-saturated society.

Not to bash Chris but I am just saying in general, I think liberal arts degrees deserve more respect than they’re typically assigned by some people. Some people assume these jobs do not lead to anything profitable but they still have a purpose and are needed.

FREAKIN HILARIOUS. Communication is key, but really homie? Engineers useless? I bet he dont say that while driving, eating processed food, or taking a shit in a toilet designed by an engineer. I dont know any unemployed people who majored in math or science…I just dont. Being a comm major myself, I did PR for a while, and then went to law school. Nobody said that, and neither did Chris. Chris was directing his comments at the people that use liberal arts majors as an excuse to coast through school without learning anything and without any intent of ever putting their degree to use at ANY juncture in life whatsoever – they use liberal arts in order to live their “college experience”, all the while taking a space in that college or university that could have been used by another student that would have actually went to college and earned a degree to actually GET an education.

Chris – let me know if I’m far off on this one.

Don’t just major in the overarching basic-ass major, get specific with it so you can find a specific place to work. I majored not just in “engineering” but Systems Engineering, and took various classes including Civil Engineering, Thermofluid Systems, and Electrical Engineering in addition to my other classes…Deterministic/Stochastic Models, various Logistics courses…I’ll have to bust out my transcript! Q: thats a beautiful argument you have. I am (politely) wondering how old you are and what you do.

“Besides, life is about meeting your own expectations.”

Life is about paying you bills and providing for yourself and your children. Life as we know it is about paying your taxes or going to jail like Wesley Snipes. Whether you major in PE, Engineering, Basket Weaving, whatever, you still gots to eat! And sadly, MOST people do not live easy, relaxing lives without college degrees. There are exceptions. (I doubt 50 cent went to college, you know what I mean, Lebron didnt go either)

However, I dont think you can argue that most people meet thier expectations, by meeting the expectations of others.

If I want to be a successful artist, someone has to like my stuff. If I want to be teacher of the year, I gotta met a buncha goals/expectations, If I wanna be a track star, I am expected to run so fast, etc…If my expectations are to be an awesome lawyer, I meet the judge’s expectations, so on and so forth…

I personally don’t know any broke Math majors. Actually every math major I know (all three of them) are making ridiculous money. One of them is a derivatives analyst making 200k per year and only 25, another one is a PhD student getting paid to solve/research random math equations or something beyond my understanding and the other is a statistician making about 100k.

@ Angry IV – basically, going to college with no idea of what you want to do can be a ridiculous waste of money.

My brother took 8 years to finish school (not full time though) and changed majors twice, he now works for AT&T making like $34,000 a year at 28 years old.

I have another friend who dropped out of UDC after one semester and became a Fireman, he was making $40,000 when he was nineteen. He is also my first friend to own his own home.

back when i was a sophomore in college and was taking organic chem and physics, i used to think that psych and history majors were so damn profound. they used to have these interesting class projects while i had to memorize reactions and equations. then, one day, after mid terms when i got my brain back for a week, i asked my friend who was a history major, “what you going to do with that?” this bitch said, unflinchingly, “I don’t know yet.” i screamed at her, “why the fuck are you here, wasting all this damn money? thats a lot to pay for not knowing!”

so began my discovery of bullshit majors. all i had to ask from then on was, “so, what you going to do with that degree?”

oh no. Don’t sleep on the Pineapple soda now. Fanta just does not go wrong when they make sodas. Actually don’t drink non-Fanta pineapple, I don’t know what that yellow stuff is but it probably makes you glow in the dark. non-Fanta pineapple tastes like it glows in the dark. It would probably grow some good tomacco.
Also black people in the caribbean know what to drink. i got addicted to their apple soda. Apple soda man. However I did learn that down there red is not your friend. There’s some red flavored soda (kola?) that tastes like pure poison. I think I gagged and twitched on the ground for like five minutes after tasting it. Distrusting red really went against my home-training.

Q

Esquire,

I am a 21 yr old soon to be college senior majoring in human services & psych planning to pursue either a MSW or MBA after I graduate in the spring such that I can pay my bills, provide for myself & my family in the future. So in other words I am no dumbie…I know the value of education & what it can get you. I was just simply trying to state that engineering isn’t for everyone & people are entitled to do whatever it is that makes them happy, gives them a sense of worth so on & so forth if that’s what they choose to do. Oh & you make a valid point about everyone having to meet some sort of expectation to be deemed whatever & I agree with you there. The expectation that I was talking about was the expectations we need to meet for ourselves which have nothing to do with other people. I don’t know subconsciously I guess we all succumb to standards in some way. (so maybe my argument is out the window lol) I’m just saying it makes more sense for some more than others to go certain routes & that is OK. I just like to try & understand both sides of the spectrum & hate the live your life this way mentality. I have nothing against engineers & the get money attitude besides 2 out of 4 of my best friends @ school are computer science & civil engineer majors & b/c of that most of the people I hang out with on the reg are NSBE/BESS (black engineering student society) kids. & I don’t know how NSBE gets down @ other universities or colleges but here @ Northeastern(boston) they are pretty much idolized, throw the best parties & are not as dorky as often portrayed (in reference to a comment Chris made earlier)

@Muse the cult comment wasn’t necessary but as a loiterer of sbph the comment section at times seems that way & dare someone disagree w/ the majority but then again thats the nature of nearly every popular blog I visit when I do my blogroll, just my thoughts on the situation.

The Mathematical Proof for Mr. T’s Infinite Pity: For life to exist there must be a symmetric equation regarding the factors of pity(p) and fools(f) -> p-f=0. If any one factor rose to a level higher than the other, life as we know it would cease to exist. The fool factor can be decisively measured by dividing jibba-jabba(j) by tolerance for said jibba-jabba(t) -> f=j/t. With these two equations we can deduce: p-f=0; f=j/t ->p-(j/t) = 0 -> p = j/t. This equation leads to quite an interesting result. As we can see, if we hold jibba-jabba constant, as tolerance for said jibba-jabba approaches 0, pity approaches infinity. Now we all well know that Mr. T “ain’t got no time for the jibba-jabba.” In fact, extensive observational studies have been conducted and even with machines able to calculate with precision to the 23rd decimal place, Mr. T’s tolerance for jibba-jabba has been conclusively found to be 0, and therefore Mr. T’s pity is the literal embodiment of the concept of infinity.

I agree that Vince Carter should have made a better decision about where/how to allocate his funds. I think that by focusing his time and attention to athletics, Carter then reinforces the idea that some children have that have schooling is pointless and useless. There are schools all over the US that have outdated materials and no technology. I think Carter would have been better off focusing on the school as a whole, instead of singling out a population of the student body where only maybe 1% or so will make it to the “big leagues” (of whatever their sport is).

Don’t even get me started about the misallocation of funds in schools. I could write volumes about the DC school system (GRRRRR!). Vermin running rampant in the cafeterias. Holes in ceilings and toilets, some bathrooms have no working toilets, no soap in bathrooms, underpaid teachers, underqualified teachers, textbooks from the 1970s, no heat in the winter or a/c in the summer…The list goes on. Yet they can find money for ball parks and other frivolous ish… smh. These schools are in the less affluent areas of DC, and God forbid should a school in Upper Northwest fall into disprepair. There’ll be protests and rioting in the streets. This both enrages and saddens me.

Off topic of Chuck Norris..I just read this on Yahoo when I went to check my mail…

Yahoo on Obama’s dap:

It’s been a marathon. No, scratch that. It’s been an ultra marathon, this race for the Democratic nomination. So it’s no wonder that when Barack Obama finally claimed the right to represent his party, he couldn’t help but cut loose and celebrate with his wife, Michelle.

But instead of the expected hug and kiss on the cheek, the couple shared the “fist-bump heard ’round the world.” The exuberant gesture sparked big interest in the Buzz. Searches on “obama fist bump” soared across the country as major news outlets replayed and analyzed the moment. Several articles, including this one from the New York Daily News, explained that many folks found the bump a charming reminder that, as Senator Obama puts it, despite all the hoopla and stress, he and his wife still “do silly things.”

Of course, no one would dare presume that a simple fist-bump will elevate Senator Obama to the White House. But an article from New York Magazine speculates that the knocking of knuckles may go a long way toward proving that the aspiring commander-in-chief is actually kind of hip. When was the last time you could say that about a presidential candidate and keep a straight face?

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR THIS POST…OMG….My stepdad and I talk about this issue all the time! He’s white if that helps you to get any kind of better understanding of all this (I’m black). We both feel that too many people cram the idea of getting a 4 year degree or whatever else down your throats…but they fail to mention it’s a complete waste of money is you don’t know what you’re going to school FOR. I have a degree in Multimedia…yay…pat on the back…I KNEW I’d be a Web Designer…but as for the REST of my friends…English degrees…oh..and I love this one…BUSINESS…ok…what are you gonna DO with your BUSINESS degree…and don’t say you’re gonna come out of school and go directly into telemarketing (i see this all too often…i’m not knocking it, but you don’t need to waste 4 years in school and all that money to do something any straight-outta-highschool kid…shoot…any HIGHSCHOOL STUDENT can do) or graduate with a BS in business only to run the hotdog stand right on the campus of the university you graduated from (YES, I’VE SEEN THIS) grrrr…..

By the way…my stepdad paints apartments for a living and owns his own business doing so…and he makes a lot more than everyone I know…myself included…that has a degree….the labor trades are so slept on and shouldn’t be. There’s also a step cousin (can i call him that? lol) in the family that is rich and he does HOME REPAIRS….and installs BATH TUBS on the side….and he does this on his OWN time because he is self-employed.

I’m thinking, I might just end up doing Web Design on the side a few years from now…and learn to lay tile or something…that pays more lol

p.s. I didn’t run this comment through spell check, so please don’t come at me * that is all

The video i think is of Sue Sommers cussing someone out. Its over on Shabooty’s site somewhere in the past. Its also at livesteez/bossip. It will entertain for days. She supposedly drinks gin during commercial breaks. Someone told me she used to work with Jim Vance in DC back during his drinking and blow days. That is like a local news dream.

Haha! Grimm eating it.

Am I the only one who laughed my ass off at Figure 4, for the simple fact that I love Family Guy? lol

But I don’t think those degrees are completely useless, for the simple fact that there are A LOT of jobs out there that would hire someone who had a degree in the lowest of all dumb majors, General Studies. They just want college graduates, period. It doesn’t really matter the degree, so I wouldn’t call English, Psychology, Philosophy etc. majors completely useless beyond just finding yourself.

But yea, I definitely agree with everything else. Some of the best athletes in the world come from the shittiest upbringings…in fact, it could be considered that their facilities growing up were so shitty were what made a big contribution to how talented they wound up being.

6 06 2008
Glennisha

First off , you’re wrong for saying that Communications, English , and Psychology degrees are useless! The world doesn’t revolve around Science and Mathematics only. Now, I do agree with your point that it doesn’t take a million dollar Gym or Athletic center to produce a pro-athlete. Most athletes have came from the worst neighborhoods that had the most ragedy gyms and playgrounds. Yes, it would have made more sense to put the money up as a scholarship fun or into academics but, go figure what do you think most athletes would do? They’re going to use their money and invest it into what they love or what got them out of the hood. It may not be the best choice for the community but, thats what they most likely will do. Even though, the kids who will play and work out in those athletic centers may not become pro athletes those centers just might keep those children off the streets and out of newspapers. I’m sick of hearing people complain about Blacks wanting to become athletes or entertainers. It’s nothing wrong with it as long as you have a serious plan. The arts and athletics have kept many people away from doing a lot of stupid shit. If you work hard at your dreams and you’re serious you can achieve them. If someone happens to make it big by following their dreams, then good. They’ll be able to take some of that money and dump it back into the community, which the average person with a college degree CAN’T DO!

6 06 2008
Glennisha

Also, we need to stop teaching our children to graduate from high school, go to college, and go work for someone else. We need to start teaching our children to become entrepreneurs. You DO NOT need a four year degree to do that!

6 06 2008
Educated NSU Demon

@ Glennisha

I agree that teaching kids to become entrepreneurs is a good thing to do. I know someone who started a photography business straight out of high school (actually, he started it during high school), and he does EXTREMELY well for himself, and never went to college. But still, having a college education in business administration is also a good start. Frankly, starting a business right out of high school takes a damn-near unreasonable amount of drive for someone that age. lol It’s definitely possible though…

Are you a producer? or a consumer..?? I don’t know buddy unless you have your own business..you’re working for the man just like th rest of the African American studies folks – join the crowd of monkey money hungry dummies throwing their own sh*t at each other *standing ovation* job well done knocking your own people down while inserting your foot in your mouth all at the same time…on most of your blogs you’re doing the same thing you’re aaccusing the black people you hate of(according to your About Me) its just confusing…AND engineers are nothing but close minded folks who have no concept of other peoples view or walk in this world(now i understand the reason you have a blog) – trust me i know i was one for a major bomb throwing iraqi killing defense company- but i quit so I can study humanties..ohhh bracing myself for the comeback…HAHAHAHAHAHA

and remember be a producer not a consumer..*as you pick up a sh*t load of donuts to take to work tomorrow-TGIF!* LOL

“I was a Computer Science major in college and it was the most god-awful 3.5 years of my life. I worked like a Hebrew slave while everyone who wasn’t either an engineering major or pre-med partied their asses off the whole time. I actually HATED my major until my sixth semester. The upside for me, though, is that today my best days are ahead of me while the people that fucked around in college have already seen theirs.”

I was a CIS major, so I FULLY understand. I see the people I knew that partied all the time in college or took on majors they deemed easy and thought I studied to hard, are now in dead-end jobs, or living off their parents and trying to be on my good side like I would be able to help them. Yeah right. *rolling eyes*

First or all….I’m a women. Thanks. Second of all, I don’t wan to fight, its Friday and my babe is in town, so no time. However, I never said the inventions of engineers were useless. I recognize the inventions and advancements all around that make life so wonderful and I respect and value the wonderful minds of those engineers. That was not my point at all. My point was essentially that your interpretation of the experiences of communications, English, phsycology, etc majors is inaccurate. I was a communication studies major at a very large, highly commpetative university. My experience was no cake walk. Now maybe that was because I made the active decision to expand my mind and not take all the ‘bird’ courses. I will admit that some people major in communications because they are told or believe it will be easy or because they have no ambition. That was not the case for me.
You are right, I love my car, someone mentioned my toilet, etc etc. Enjoying these advancements does not mean that communications, english, psycology, etc degrees are worthless or less valuable. In fact, I believe they support each other. I need the tech guy to make this laptop work but with out we customer service employees our tech guy would be unemployyed.

My decision to major in Communication Studies was a well thought out choice. My degree is very specific to my goals and ambitions, as well as well suited to my talents. It is unfair to assume that people with communications degrees selected them because of ease or that each communications degree is equal. My degree and my major were critical in my hiring process. I have had numerous oportnities because of the knowledge afforded by my degree.

oh AND I honestly do know numerous unemployeed ‘math’ and ‘business’ majors.

7 06 2008
Shay-d-lady

know, I know, this is not a post about what the blog site author has deemed “useless majors” but I have to defend them. I have a Bachelor of Science in English. ( I spelled it out so it wouldn’t read BS in English…LMAO). English is a very broad major and its really unfair to have them all lumped together. C’mon do you really think technical writing and romantic literature are the same? I mean someone has to develop training materials, and most of the people that create said material are English majors. Now that being said, I think the author happens to be extremely intelligent. I say this because he seems to excel in both the art of communicating and (I am assuming because I have never actually seen him “engineer” anything) engineering/IT. However,in my experience as a technical writer; most engineers are idiots outside of their respective field or discipline. Most of the IT people I deal with can’t spell, dont know when to end a sentence, and couldn’t write a basic paragraph if lives depended on it. They get by with this because of the fact that they work with computers and everybody knows that people who work on computers are fucking geniuses (the eye roll is understood here). Aside from that I totally agree with the post. Oh and fuck Vince, Kobe and Oprah… yeah I said it!

7 06 2008
scarletjones

Damn ya’ll got me back up in this blog commenting

really @ all of this bashing of engineers. Fuck everybody who wants to reference experiences with IT people and whomever they happened to bump into while working in the computer lab in undergrad or some shit, and use this as a justification of marginalizing or judging ALL engineers! Engineering is such a large and varied field, and just as much as people outside of these fields don’t want to be generalized or marginalized, don’t try to turn that shit around and start projecting because somebody hurt your feelings or tapped into your insecurities about yourself and your decisions in pursuit of your career. I don’t need to defend my career pursuits because they are what i’m interested in, and the lack or need to defend said pursuits is absolutely not because I feel that being a computer scientist is better than being a writer or a media personality or a librarian. Inherent in your need to defend your place is an insecurity about the perception that you have about how it defines you.

Chris didn’t even post a blanket statement about these disciplines, but i’m not sure why he even made the attempt at trying to specify what he meant by what he said because it was clearly lost on many people. Fall back everybody and watch out because your ass psyche is showing with all of this passive aggressive sniping bullshit!

CHURCH!

7 06 2008
Shay-d-lady

Hmmm…Ms. Jones, if you don’t see the need to defend yourself, why such a lengthy post? Isn’t your post an example of the very thing you seem so upset about? I feel that my degree is just as good as any other 4 year degree. I don’t feel that it is better nor do I feel that any other degree is better or “harder” than mine. I simply feel that it was choice that I made. I preferred English to Math. Some prefer Math to English and so on and so on. There are plenty of “engineers” and IT personnel at Best Buy making 12.00 an hour too. These are just my thoughts and as my favorite quote goes “opinions are like assholes, every body has one and some are full of shit”. Some are also bigger than others but that’s a whole other issue.

7 06 2008
scarletjones

And if you read what i previously wrote you would see that my comments weren’t a defense at all. It was a reaction to the masses of comments that were made in defense of personal choices that also felt the need to include snide and derrogatory comments about others that chose opposing fields.

(i.e. –
“However,in my experience as a technical writer; most engineers are idiots outside of their respective field or discipline. Most of the IT people I deal with can’t spell, dont know when to end a sentence, and couldn’t write a basic paragraph if lives depended on it. They get by with this because of the fact that they work with computers and everybody knows that people who work on computers are fucking geniuses (the eye roll is understood here)” – shad-d-lady
)

And how is my post a good example of what i’m upset about? I never had anything negative to say about anyone or their choices in careers. I never said one choice was better than the other.. in fact i made it a point to say that i DIDN’T think that computer science was a better choice than “being a writer or a media personality or a librarian”. what i did have complaints about are those, like yourself, that decided to wrap up a whole bunch of hate and generalizations, into a supposed DEFENSE of your educational choice. it’s not necessary to degrade someone else in order to uplift yourself or your (asshole) opinion!

Your view of what constitues an engineer is clearly a very limited one since, from your comments, you are only citing IT personnel and fools working at Best Buy. I was endeavoring in my previous post to try to inform you and others that the field is a whole lot broader than that (evidenced by the fact that you have highways being build in your city, buildings being erected, technology being produced, software to create your media, etc.)

others like yourself have made the type of comments that clearly indicate to me you don’t have a understanding of what an engineer really is…. so how do you justify having an opinion about a group you don’t really know anything about? if you can’t i will be forced to believe that your defense is what i previously believed….. passive aggressive sniping bullshit!

7 06 2008
Shay-d-lady

LMAO.. I mean really? Calm down chick, its 1 in the morning.. get over yourself.. I only used best buy as an example of people in the field of computer science and IT not making a lot of money.

7 06 2008
scarletjones

it’s not even about the reference to best buy, I don’t care for being mis-interpreted, or for people who apply double standards. it’s a frustrating thing, i’m sure you will agree, when a person expresses a dislike of a behavior only to turn around and exhibit it. You didn’t appreciate the “bashing” of english majors, but turned around and bashed your IT guy and engineers in general, who according to you are idiots unless doing something related to their field.

that’s my main gripe. it wasn’t even specific to your post because you weren’t the first to make such comments. i’ve been reading the comments from this post as well as others and felt the need to be an angry black commentor for a minute because the double standard irks.

I’m not about to take the “all engineers are socially awkward dummies and money grubbing workaholics” talk personal because i know that’s not everybody that’s in engineering or science. But let’s just all be real with ourselves and stop acting like you’re neutral about it if you’re not. I’m real neutral about what people decide to do for a career, but people have too much emotional junk they don’t want to deal with and instead try to roll it up into these wierd micro-agressions and give it to someone else to deal with.

that…. is…. wack!

7 06 2008

In agreement with your blog entry. Donating money in this manner, just to make oneself feel good, is selfish and reeks of asshole-ish-ness. Make oneself feel better by donating the money to more worthy causes, like what you mentioned.

What you said times infinite I agree with everything you said academics are essential and should be supported. Fuck having a big million dollar center where people can play sports most schools(even my shitty one) have a good enough sports center that any naturally talented individual can shine. If I ever get rich(which I hope comes from some awesome game I make) I will for sure help my city’s(Portsmouth, VA) schools because we are so under funded it ridiculous and a trap for most of our younger people because most say fuck school I can make plenty of cash being stupid and selling drugs which while true is stupid. I only have one friend who sold and was smarter than half the people who even went to school let alone get a college degree who makes me sad because hes gone for a good 6 to 10 years because he trusted some dumb ass with no lisence to transport his drugs. And it also pains me that half of the people I grew up with are locked up(all for stupid shit hell one might be going down for a couple years just for stealing a beer because of that stupid ass 3 strikes law(I HATE the 3 strikes law)). And while a better school may not have kept them from that situation the probability is higher that they wouldn’t because sans about 1 or 2 most of my friends are intelligent they just don’t know what to do with it.
