Grocery Shopping

17 03 2008

Don’t get me wrong – black people love to eat, and buying food is one of the few activities in which we’re happy to spend a relatively large amount of money, especially if BBQ is involved. But the Yin to that Yang is this simple fact:

There is no venue in America more indicative of the plight of black people than the black grocery store.

I’m a spoiled motherfucker. After completing my 18 year sentence in southeast DC, I spent the next 7 years removed from the black grocery store. Between 18 – 21, I pretty much never shopped at all because I always ate at this godforsaken place. From 21 – 22, I lived near White Oak and was treated to grocery stores filled mostly with Hispanics*. From age 22 to the present, I bounced around in more affluent neighborhoods like Rockville and Germantown, and found myself shopping at goddamn Whole Foods and Harris Teeter**.

Then, about 2 months ago, I bought a condo in a neighborhood that’s in…transition – that is, a black neighborhood sprinkled with nervous-looking white people.

Figure 1: This happens on my street constantly

My reaction to re-entering the black grocery store after spending the last three years or so at Whole Foods was kinda like the reaction between really really cold water and really really hot oil (for those who don’t cook – it’s unexpected, loud, confusing, messy, and painful). My first trip to the local Safeway involved the following:

  • Getting cursed out by the homeless dude who loiters in front of the store because, apparently, $5 is way below the unit price for the giant pile of absolutely fucking nothing he gave me in return for it. This was followed almost immediately by me being bowled over by…
  • …a boy, about 12 years old, shoplifting two sacks of oranges and being chased by an elderly store manager. But at least he’ll be eating healthier than…
  • …the 400+ lb man with a shopping cart OVERFLOWING with Hungry Man dinners (and nothing but Hungry Man dinners), as if his fat ass could possibly be Hungry or even remotely resembled a Man. Perhaps he eats because he’s depressed as a result of being married to…
  • …the woman whose eyebrows were a.) drawn on with b.) a turquoise fucking pencil. She was, not surprisingly, the mother of…
  • …the toddler who was screaming, I kid you not, “YALL NIGGAZ AIN’T SHIT!” to virtually anyone who got within six feet of him, including…
  • …the 15 (?) year old girl who was dressed like a stripper named ‘Sable’ and kept asking me for my phone number. To get her off my case, I figured I’d busy myself by reading a magazine – so I look over at the mag aisle to be greeted by endless copies of…
  • …’Guns ‘N Ammo’ magazine, conveniently located in the main grocery store of a neighborhood with a 30 year history of rampant gun violence.

Figure 2: (l to r) Before grocery shopping, after grocery shopping, and how I got over it***

I love my black people, but goddammit…I miss Whole Foods.

*Hispanic grocery stores, even in questionable neighborhoods, are remarkably immaculate.
**Every time you shop at Whole Foods, God kills a kitten. Or if He’s busy, this guy will.

You should take pictures of all of the crazies next time you go to the grocery store. I want to see what turquoise eyebrows look like!

Thanks again for hitting home for me. I’ve had basicaly the same experience, from Living in White Oak to “Working” at Whole Foods to the sheer amazement that I feel each time I enter what I choose to call a “ghetto grocery store”. I’ve come to enjoy the idea of shopping in an enviroment that is not quite so ethnicaly challenged for several reasons.
1) CHEAP, inexpensive, “not as high as giant”

2) Some is always thoughtful enough to offer to buy all of my groeries on something called an independance card for only half the actual total. WOW how can they afford to be so generous?

3) The don’t have to waste time comparing or choosing. You tend to have a maximum of approximately brand for each item that your shoping for. Also the fact that the produce and any other “fresh” items are not what I would refer as being …fresh. So you needn’t worry yourself with picking through any of it.

4)I’ve recently relocated to what may be the most racist location on Earth outside of Suncity South Africa. yup! good ol Australia. I can say that one of the few activities that I find comforting in my new city is shopping at there version of a “ghetto grocer”.

SO yeah in conclusion I guess you’ve helped me to realize one very common thread between Bmore and Melbs….Shopping at the lower end of the social economic scale is basicaly the same all over.
THANKS!

Trader Hoes

ahhhhh yes. At 14th by the new Tarzhay there is a Giant w/ a few regulars. El Griton (shouts at the UN General Assembly of the Mind) and Miss Sanctified (screams about being “anointed”).

There is also El Seifguey, where there’s nothing the shelves. This was also the site of a lesbian love triangle that ended in a hail of gunfire.

I keep my car for those runs back to Harris Teeter in Alexandria…for my REAL grocery shopping.

Sounds like you’ve been shopping at the Benning Rd. Safeway again. Actually now that there are White people living there, the Benning Rd. area has been re-christened “East of StarBurst” by realtors.

You just reminded me of good times shopping in the ‘hood in West Philly (Sav-Mor? I can’t remember). I brought my poor mother along and she was horrified to see a mouse in the store (nobody else reacted, too busy buying those weird barrel-shaped mini containers of festively colored water for their kids). She was even more horrified when a large lady (perhaps enhanced with turquoise eyebrows as well)accosted her and threatened to “tear her up” when she grabbed the last loaf of Wonder-Bread. Aaah West Philly…

I take it the hood grocery stores btw, don’t have a “Peapod” program like the Giant Food chain -which basically will truck deliver you your groceries. or maybe that would fall under ‘stuff white people like’.

The Big Black (not on birth certificate)

1.) great writing style

2.) I have to represent for Houston. We have an HEB at the corner of Scott and OST (just on the border betwixt Yellowstone (the hood) and The Tre (a mixture of hood and Black affluence)) and it has been subject to gun fights in the parking lot, my girl gave condoms to a hooker who jumped into a truck of 3 men as part of Urban League community service, and then there is the plethora of high blood pressure and diabetes products all at some multiple for $1′

3.) The HEB at Gulf Gate is Hispanic. It is also larger with a better selection and cleaner. I suspect because the cheap Mexican labor works and shops there, their might be a level of pride. Yes, I am aware that the same logic could be applied to comment #2, but as you are black + anticipate that you understand that we are more astrophysics in comprehendiing our behavior rather than algebra.

4.) I live next to an HEB, but it is called Central Market (my neighborhood is central to all that is upscale to Houston). It is so fly I don’t think it sells JIF or Peter Pan. There is ungrounded coffee from all over. There is a cheese department. We have micro-brews (Shlitz my ass).

5.) There has to be economic opportunity in the hood for a grocer brave enough to sell food that won’t facilitate the onset of hypertension. I can’t believe we truly want to be disgustingly fat, chronically ill, and constantly shopping in filth.

There are Black grocery stores??? lol. News to me, I’ve lived in Harlem most of my life and the only grocery stores that I’ve come in to contact have been owned by the middle easterners and hispanics. Maybe I will be the first to open a real grocery store in HARLEM! Keep up the posting

Ok, great! Now were getting somewhere. Finally a black dude willing to call it as it is.

Now, try to imagine going through the same exact thing, word for word, but being white…AND this is important, getting looked at like a) “what the fuck are you doing here?” and b) like you’re about to get mugged.

Now, imagine doing all of that, going through that bullshit every day, and being called a racist for trying to “gentrify” the neighborhood.

Waah waah waah! Sorry that I a) pick up my garbage b) pick up your garbage c) try to improve my home d) don’t break bottles EVERYWHERE e) go to sleep at a reasonable hour f) drive a reasonable car that isn’t fleshed out with every tacky gimmicky loud and stupid extra money wasting crap. Ect ect ect…

Yes, us white people, all of us, are racists. When we move in, it’s colonization (where when a Latino moves in it’s “migration” ohhh aren’t they such pretty little birds”).
When we move out it’s “white flight”, now were the birds. And were cowards to boot. And again, it’s the lone reason for everyone’s misery.
When we move back in it’s the big G word, GENTRIFICATION!!!

Folks, forget the holocaust, forget slavery, forget the crusades! Make way for GENTRIFICATION!!! It’s the worst thing that white people have ever, ever done. Ruining neighborhoods, destroying their flavor (yes, what will black people do now that the Crown/Kennedy fried chicken place is gone?) robbing them of their SOUL.

It’s weird to me because all blacks do is complain about the ghetto, but then they start to whine when it gets nicer. I know it’s a tragity on par with the titanic that some of them can’t still live there and will have to ruin some other part of the city. But you know..

I’m sorry that when I live somewhere, it gets…nicer.

Yrs truly,
That nervous looking white guy who lives on your street.

PS. If you really think that they serve bad products and keep a dirty store, may I suggest what us uptight, and snobbish white folk do, and simply refrain from shopping there.

White Guy… you are the reason for this blog. Your statements induce nothing but utter hilarity to me… simply because you complain about the same exact thing that we complain about… so it goes both ways right?

But why is it that whenever blacks attempt to make well for themselves, taxes go up in the areas they live in, insurance goes up, and public services go flying out the door just like your wonderful white flight. Indeed your statements are rattling, but I also encourage… no, I challenge you to put yourself in the ghetto and live there for a month… without your wonderful job, without transportation, and without ALL of the luxuries that you enjoy currently. And when I say move to the ghetto… I don’t mean moving to somewhere in prince georges county, where people like you consider it the rich people’s ghetto… no… I mean the West Baltimore… North Avenue… Poplar Grove and Ellamont Street. Lets see how long you like living there.

Yeah and? Life sucks. Get a motherfucking job.

Admiral Furious said:But why is it that whenever blacks attempt to make well for themselves, taxes go up in the areas they live in, insurance goes up, and public services go flying out the door just like your wonderful white flight.

Taxes go up no matter what. Taxes, in my lifetime, have almost never gone down. Same for insurance, same for services.

The point that I’m trying to make is that yes, the banks do what they do and it sucks, but why do the open minded, civic minded people, WHO CLEAN UP THEIR GARBAGE have to bear the brunt of the Gentrification tag, as if cleaning up is something bad in the first place?

Indeed your statements are rattling, but I also encourage… no, I challenge you to put yourself in the ghetto and live there for a month… without your wonderful job, without transportation, and without ALL of the luxuries that you enjoy currently. Were not talking about the root causes of poverty here, were talking about neighborhoods in transition. No, I didn’t buy a house in the worlds worst ghetto. Why on Earth would I? Did you?

But the people in the ghetto, need to change. Sorry. But it’s a fact. They need to show up and give it a better try. And you know this. The kids at 13, the crack, none of those are my, or sorry “the CIA’s” fault.

When black people move into a nice white suburb, I hate to say it, but it begins to turn to shit. You can call it whatever you want, I call it : NOT CLEANING UP YOUR MOTHERFUCKING GARBAGE.

I wanted to stay out of whiteguy’s discussion, but I can’t stop laughing.

Why are people getting upset over WG’s apples-to-oranges comparison of upper-middle class white people vs. relatively impoverished black people? This discussion is, at it’s root, race-neutral, and is really all about socioeconomics.

Everybody’s surely noticed by now WG’s sleight of hand in neglecting to mention how poor white folks (which makes up an overwhelming percentage of their population) conduct themselves, and anyone in my area who has ever visited Waldorf, Glen Burnie, or certain parts of Baltimore knows that neighborhood’s with these white folks are >= jacked up as poor black neighborhoods.

Why didn’t I mention this before? Because this is a blog about stuff black people hate. Black people don’t move into poor white neighborhoods, so we have no reason to hate it, and I have no reason to talk about it.

I am laughing so hard I think I’m going to soil myself like the guy in the Bad Hygiene post.

Of course not. You’re too busy moving into black neighborhoods and complaining about black people, all the while pretending that poor white people don’t exist. I wouldn’t expect anything less.

Congratulations whiteguy you win the prize for biggest idiot. You’ve never been to a ghetto before and you will never go to one because you fear you might get shot. Chris! You tell him baby!

White guy you ignorant ass, obviously the same issues with poverty exist worldwide. Perhaps the reason you don’t hear poor white people complaining as much is because they haven’t been as savvy as poor black people in rising above their situation and giving voice to the issues that exist within their communities. Poor black people have infiltrated your popular media on an astronomical scale. Even made your little children in the suburbs love us. Something to be said for the kind of ambition and resilience isn’t there? Everyday there are those of us who get educated, compete for and win the same jobs as you despite the fact that we grew up in neighborhoods with those horrible supermarkets. Perhaps this is what pisses you off. We black folks are wonderful aren’t we!?! 😀

Have you ever thought that the Black people in your neighborhood didn’t want you “improving” their neighborhood. Maybe they are spiteful of the fact that its white people trying to clean up the Black folk’s mess. I feel that if a community is a shithole and it has always been predominately Black/Hispanic, it’s a real blow to the people’s pride to see that it to “outsiders” to come in and edify the community. Maybe they feel that if their people couldn’t or hadn’t improved the neighborhood at that point, they sure as hell didn’t need the white man to do it for them.

Just a thought.

I don’t at all think that litter-strewn ‘hoods are a “black thing”. It’s a “lack of pride and respect for yourself and your neighbors” thing. Go to any poor city on planet Earth and you will trash all over the place. I’ve lived in South Asia, in an impoverished city. It was filthier than Camden, NJ– where I live. I think when people have respect for themselves and others, when they stop being lazy, and maybe, to a lesser extent, when the town develops better methods for sanitation/trash control, slums will not be slum-looking. C’mon, just because you’re poor doesn’t mean you don’t have a trash can. Respect God’s earth and man’s property.

Whiteguy #1 is obviously a fool as you have duly noted.

So glad you are out here posting away, whiteguy, showing how much progress we’ve all made in overcoming prejudices and sweeping generalizations. Are you really so foolish as to believe the fecal matter you’re typing up here? Do you have any conception that it’s ignorant crap?

I think the poster that suggested whiteguy has been sheltered is correct…every closet white racist I’ve come across was created that way. In the closet in front of non-white people, that is. No doubt whiteguy is not up-front about his prejudices, actually. I wouldn’t give him credit for having any balls. This is the internet and he’s just another scared white dude venting his ignorant suburban fears with no chance of being found out.

The Devil

Whiteguy,

My question is, why are you moving into impoverished black neighborhoods in the first place? Someone could easily argue that you, and others like you, need to try to give yourselves a rationale for your delusions of grandeur and false sense of superiority.

Your brand of racism, while preferable to the subtle variety, is in large part relished because it gives us a clear target, thereby minimizing collateral damage.

Gentrification sucks the soul out of neighborhoods, and that is not worth your clean yard. I’ll take litter on the street and Ben’s Chilli Bowl, Ms Charlotte’s Crab Cakes, and French’s Table over yet another “shaved caveman in a suit” yuppie-filled Starbucks any day of the week.

Gentrification does real harm to real people. Check the recent article in the Washington Post that showed that many apartment building owners forced out their rent-controlled tenants so they could quickly convert to condos attractive to “professionals.”

If you choose to move to a community, don’t complain. You have choices that the people around you often do not.

Now go kill yourself

Unfortunately, I don’t even think turquoise eyebrows can make me smile again. It’s bad enough that these clowns want to take our neighborhoods, but now they want to read our blogs too! I did an entry about gentrification and I got a whiny comment (like six months later) from someone talmbout “I don’t have a lot of money, so why can’t I live in Bed Stuy? It’s not my faut….” waaaa, waaaa, waaaaa.

DEAD @ the devil: “shaved caveman in a suit”! HUZZAH!

Chris- that sounds like the Safeway on Good Hope Road and Alabama Ave. My homegirl has a condo over there too, and I went there for the first time in ages last week. Theres a similar Safeway in Cap Hill somewhere. Talk about when worlds collide. If you drive, you need to go’n head and hit up that Harris Teeter in Pentagon Row. There are Whole Foods and Trader Joes all over the DMV you can get too as well.

Nothing compares to the Giant on Georgia Ave by Howard or the Shoppers on Sargent Road in Hyattsville (Pretty Ghetto County). At the latter, the manager on duty wrote me a love letter about how much he likes my legs. I started stealing the fresh baked cookies and eating them in the store out of retailiation.

Hi people,

I am a Caucasian male who has grown up in a very diverse neighborhood In Fairfax county. It is largely Hispanic and White, with strong Asian, African, and Indian influences as well.

I work in DC and have been thinking about moving there for a while. I do not have a high income or a lot of money saved, so moving to a less expensive, low income area is appealing to me, it is really my only option to move into the city any be independent.

I love all people and recognize that our bodies and minds are but possessions of our collective spirit.

I am trying to neutralize my carbon footprint and would like to be able to bike to work, I grow a large portion of my own food, and i have no chemical or psychological addictions. I try to be a positive member of my community where ever I am on Gods green earth.

My question is, should I move in to a less expensive region of SE DC?

7 05 2008
Knatural

Bobbles – yes. Live wherever you want, but not all of SE DC is considered ‘less expensive’. If you move to a predominantly Black neighborhood in DC, you will be looked at funny, because the residents will wonder if you’re a ‘scout ant’.

I’ve lived in South Asia, in an Impoverished city.It was filthier than Camden, NJ-where I live.

This may be a little off topic, but some Third Slums may not have the amenities we take for granted. I am NOT saying that some of the residents DON’T need to keep there area clean when they don’t-or do the little they can-t but half of the problems in that South Asian slum had to do with them probably not having existing/responsive sanitation departments or whatever, you know(not trying to be mean here) certain amenities; and, to be honest the hoods in Camden probably got terrible service in the same areas. As for white guy, it is not like he has to live there. He CHOSE to live there and if he don’t like it he CAN MOVE!Pointblank! You DON’T see blacks rushing to Appalachia or to trailer parks to gentrify those areas. Speaking of poor white residents as a whole being more sanitary, more industrious, and less violent that is hogwash and this fool knows it! The residents in trailerparks make the SAME mistakes/have the SAME problems to the same degree,if not more sometimes, as residents do in other hoods, barrios,Asiantowns, and reservations-and for some of the same reasons. I have seen some of these areas myself, we are not picture of sanitation or whatever here.
